Chapter 8: The Keeper of the Last Memory

460 Words
The Central City is in a data frenzy. A red notice has been issued by the Global Technology Council: “Subject: Anna – original code MH-13-LΣΦ. Status: unknown. Threat level: A super entity carrying an unregistered memory core. Ability to propagate original memories. Request: Erase all data – global level.” She – the keeper of uncontrollable memories – is now the greatest threat to the programmed order. Anna sits in a dark room, her hands connected to an underground server. She is not running away. She is preparing to disseminate the true memory. Not for revenge. Not to destroy. But to unlock. “If memories can be bought and sold like commodities, then let a true memory... be free.” She hits send. The core memory layer – the first, most original entity – spreads like a storm: into the public network, into the bodies of those who once received artificial memories, into AIs programmed with limited emotions. The world trembles. Millions of people faint. Thousands of chaotic memory copies begin... to feel for the first time. To feel pain, longing, love, loss. Truly. A signal arrives. Elric Duong – the scientist who created her – has summoned her to the global memory system control center. Anna appears. He looks older, his gaze no longer cold – but... empty. — “Why?” – he asks – “You could live peacefully, you could disappear. Why do this?” — “Because I am no longer a fragment of memory for you to reset. I do not belong to any system.” — “Do you think freedom is real?” — “No. But I choose to believe it is. And that is what makes a person.” Elric stands still. He does not argue. He simply says quietly: — “Then... make this world yours.” The memory exchange service collapses. No one wants to attach false memories anymore – because after the "Core Storm," people begin to remember things they never lived, to feel emotions they have never experienced. Chaos – but also rebirth. A new generation is born: children born after the Core event, with the ability to retain memories from their ancestors without devices. And amidst the abandoned old land, a small house is built. No AI. No devices. Anna – or now Emma – lives there. She writes, tells stories, and welcomes those who want to find themselves again. People call her by a new name: “The Keeper of the Last Memory.” “We are not our memories. But the way we choose to hold on to – or let go of – those memories... is what makes us human.” – Excerpt from “The Ashes of Data,” Emma.
