I was almost out the door when Walter asked if he could talk to me. He was talking to someone else, so I waited to the side and tried not to eavesdrop on his conversation.
“Thanks, Elise,” he said when he joined me. “You came in at noon today, right?”
I nodded. “Yeah, why? Do you need me to stay?”
He sighed. “I do. If you can. If you have something going on, I can ask someone else, but—”
“It’s fine,” I said. “I don’t have any plans.”
Plans didn’t include checking my phone and hoping I had a new message from Colin. It had been two days since we talked, and I had to admit I was hoping to hear from him since then.
