"Sorry, the number you dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later..." A cold, robotic voice spoke through the phone.
Kyran’s face turned dark with anger. Elestria was actually ignoring his calls?
His assistant, Kian, spoke carefully, "Mr. Valtor, would you like to go home and check on your wife?"
"No need." Kyran tossed his phone aside.
Kian continued gently. "Then should I order a different meal for you?"
"Never mind. I will eat somewhere else." Kyran grabbed his coat and walked out the door.
At the Bellmont Hotel, Zyrelle, dressed in a beautiful, stylish outfit and glowing with youth, sat down in the seat across from Kyran. She had already ordered beef bourguignon and French onion soup with crusty bread, and now she placed both dishes right in front of him.
Whenever the three of them had eaten together before—Kyran, Elestria, and herself—these two dishes had always been on the table. She thought Elestria only ordered them because Kyran liked them.
"Kyran, do not be angry. Elestria is only doing this to get your attention." Zyrelle lifted a piece of beef and placed it on his plate.
Kyran looked at her face, a face that held a faint likeness to Elestria, and spoke quietly, "From now on, do not act as if you belong here. These two dishes are Elestria's favorites."
All colors left Zyrelle's face in an instant. "I... I..."
"Just eat," Kyran cut her off.
The meal ended, and as they walked out into the night, Zyrelle slipped her arm through his. "Kyran, let us go home."
The word "home" had barely left her mouth when his expression turned cold.
He pulled his arm away. "Home? What home? We are not married. What 'home' could we possibly share?"
She stood frozen, shocked and hurt.
Kyran got into the car and gave her one last look. "Do not think just because I stayed at your place these past few days, things have changed between us. Do not imagine things that are not yours."
With that, he left her standing there, then he told the driver to take him straight to Victoria Peak. When he reached the house on the hill, night had fully fallen.
Kyran pushed open the door, and darkness surrounded him.
"Why are the lights off?" He spoke toward the sofa out of habit.
In the past, whenever he came home late, Elestria would always be there waiting for him on the couch. But today, when he turned on the light, the sofa was empty. Only the green dress he had given her lay across the coffee table.
Kyran stood still. He looked toward the bedroom upstairs. The door was open a little, and the room beyond was dark. The message was clear. Elestria was still angry! Kyran did not rush to the bedroom.
Instead, he took his time washing up in the guest room before finally walking back.
"Still upset?" He walked in and turned on the light.
He had thought Elestria was already asleep, but the bed was perfectly made and untouched. The blanket had not even been moved. It was only then did he notice the room felt empty, as if something was missing. He stood up and looked around. Elestria's phone was gone. Her jewelry box stood open and empty.
All because of a small argument? Had Elestria actually left the house?
He no longer felt like sleeping in their bedroom. He picked up his phone and went to the guest room instead.
That night, he slept badly, turning restlessly in bed. And a terrible dream came to him. In the dream, Elestria was lying there, covered in blood.
He woke up suddenly, his heart beating fast and hard. Just then, the phone beside him rang loudly.
He picked it up. The screen showed the name Vespera Lorian, Elestria's former agent, and he thought that she must be trying to help make peace since Elestria must be too proud to call herself, so she had sent her agent to speak instead.
Kyran felt a sudden sense of relief, and answered the call.
"Mr. Valtor, this is Vespera. A week ago, Elestria agreed to return to acting. But I have been trying to reach her since then... and nothing. Is she alright?" Vespera's voice sounded worried and urgent.
Kyran had not realized she had stopped answering even her agent. He frowned and replied, "She is just being stubborn. She has probably gone back to her parents' home in the south." Her parents' home, the place where she grew up.
Vespera spoke slowly, her voice tight with shock, "You did not know? Elestria's parents died in a car accident one year ago! How could she possibly go back there?"
