Making sense of it all

898 Words
The truth was hard to accept, as Lidia was no different from other young werewolves after all. She was her own person with her own dreams of love, and all she had dreamt of was being able to choose her own love interest and not being forced to marry the Alpha whom she had not chosen herself. Lidia was angry, that's right, she was livid at her parents, especially her father, whom she loved, and her older brother, who had been the main reason she had run away from home. She was now faced with the present situation because of them. In her own mind, she had chosen this, but in reality, this was not of her making but her family's. Lidia stood by the window again, staring out into the night, trying to steady the storm inside her. Kael hadn’t spoken since the confrontation. Ethan hadn’t joked since the vision. And she— She felt like she was splitting into two different versions of herself. One drawn to fire. One drawn to stillness. Then— It happened. A sharp tug in her chest. Not the deep, consuming pull of the bond she shared with Kael. No. This was different. Lighter. But just as real. Her breath hitched. “What… is that?” She turned instinctively. Ethan. He stood across the room, leaning over the table, studying something—completely unaware. But her body— Moved. Without permission. Without thought. One step. Then another. Kael noticed instantly. His head snapped up. “Lidia.” But she didn’t stop. Her heart began to race, not from fear—but from something softer. Warmer. Familiar. Like the echo of the vision. Ethan looked up just as she reached him. Their eyes met. And the pull— Snapped into place. Her hand brushed his. And the world shifted. Not violently. Not like before. This time— It unfolded. She saw— Not a future. Not a vision. A memory. Ethan. Alone. Standing in the same house—but older. Tired. Watching time pass around him like something he couldn’t fully belong to. “I was waiting for you,” his voice echoed faintly. Lidia’s chest tightened. Then— It was gone. She stumbled back. “What was that?” she whispered. Kael was already moving. Fast. His hand closed around her arm—not harsh, but firm. “What did you do?” he demanded, his voice low and dangerous. “I didn’t do anything!” she shot back, shaken. “It just—happened!” Ethan looked just as stunned. “Yeah,” he said, running a hand through his hair. “That’s… new.” Kael’s gaze snapped to him. Sharp. Accusing. “That should not be possible.” Ethan frowned. “You want to be a little more specific?” Kael stepped closer, his presence filling the room. “A wolf does not form two bonds,” he said. The words landed heavy. Final. Law. Lidia’s heart pounded. “But it doesn’t feel like yours,” she said quickly. “It’s not the same.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “It does not matter.” His eyes flicked to Ethan. “It exists.” Among her kind, there was one truth above all others: Anything else— Was unnatural. Unstable. Forbidden. “If what you’re saying is true,” Ethan said slowly, “then what is this?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. And that silence— Was terrifying. Lidia swallowed hard. “Say it.” His gaze returned to her. Dark. Certain. “An anomaly,” he said. “Or a corruption.” Ethan’s expression hardened. “That’s one way to make me feel welcome.” Kael ignored him. “If the bond fractures,” he continued, “it can tear the wolf apart.” Lidia’s breath caught. “What does that mean?” Kael stepped closer to her again. Lowering his voice. “Your wolf is already unstable from crossing time,” he said. “If it is pulled in two directions—” He didn’t finish. He didn’t have to. “You’re saying I could lose my wolf,” she whispered. Silence fell again. But this time— It wasn’t just tension. It was fear. Ethan looked at her, something conflicted in his expression. “That’s not happening,” he said firmly. “We’ll figure this out.” Kael’s gaze snapped to him again. “You are the cause of it.” Ethan scoffed. “Oh, that’s convenient.” “You interfere with time,” Kael said. “You exist outside of it. Whatever you are—” He stepped closer. “—you are not meant to bond with her.” Kael saw it. And this time— He didn’t hide his reaction. The air shifted. Heavy. Predatory. “Control it,” Kael said sharply. “I’m trying!” she snapped back. Ethan stepped forward instinctively. “Hey—back off. She’s not doing this on purpose.” Kael’s eyes flashed silver. “Do not tell me what she is doing.” Lidia pulled free from Kael’s grip. “Stop it!” she shouted. Both men froze. Her chest heaved. “I’m not something to fight over,” she said, her voice shaking. “I don’t even understand what’s happening to me—” Her voice broke. “And you’re both making it worse.” Silence.
