“I was just asking Shane about his job with the Forest Service.”
“Sure you were.”
“I was. Wasn’t I, Shane?”
“He was, Jessie, but we’ll get out of your hair. We need to get out to the barn, anyhow,” Shane said. “Five-sixteen’s in labor. Becky thinks she’ll have twins.”
“No surprise there, but why’s she in the barn? She’s never had a problem delivering before.”
“Jim,” Jessie warned.
“We’ll let you rest,” Becky said, taking Shane’s free hand.
They vacated the living room, taking their plates out to the barn to eat their lunch. Nothing had happened in their absence, and Andy and Max left to tend to other duties.
