Chapter 12: ShelterAsh pulled a safety pin, bobby pin, and a pair of fingernail clippers out of her lock box. She knelt by the padlocked wooden door of the brick building as rain thumped her back. “I’m not going to break the windows to get in unless I can’t pick this lock,” she told Dayna. She alternated between pins, the fingernail file on the clippers, and the key around her neck, trying to find the best tool while Dayna paced. As Ash twisted the bobby pin inside the lock for the second time, she heard a click and jumped up. She flung open the door, revealing a single room with several rows of benches made of logs. “I think it’s a one-room schoolhouse,” she said. “Look, there’s a blackboard.
