I'm Going Too

Chapter 17: I'm Going Too. Kael's POV. “Wolves?” I can't help but laugh at the realization of the words coming out of his mouth. I cannot believe this. We had promptly stopped supervising the borders, majorly because of Aria. And now we were suffering dearly for it. There were wolves at the borders. “Get the men. Reach them now.”I started brain-kicking straight into action. “Let them know to prepare for leaving the place. I'll meet them in the living space. We have a lot to get done.” As I said that, I left the place, leaving all three of them still in shock. I'm walking towards the living space to reach for the men. I didn't have time for inefficiency and the degree of emotion being shown. This soap opera had to wait. And it had to wait now. The stout man nodded and walked away, moving towards the quarters at brisk speed. We have a very limited army. Which is why we took our time to be safe in regard to the borders. This meant that some other pack had been watching this territory. They must have started for a while now. And there being no guards in sight, they had to find an open way. And get whatever they could. But I had to be strategic about it, to understand this point. They knew what was coming. The only way to do that was simple. To fight a strategic fight. And they have been fighting. The problem was, just as we had good sight and full vision, they did too. So ambushing them would be more reluctant. But we had to try. We didn't have much more hope than that. We had to try. I stood in the living space, my legs in a wide stance. My hands were crossed in front of me, brain drafting a plan immediately. The men strolled in, talking amongst themselves. Languidly. Like they had taken a couple of days off and now they didn't want to work anymore. It was irritating. Even for me. I breathed. They arranged themselves promptly before me, awaiting my instructions. I nodded at them, nodding once more at the stout one that had come before. Two men came out and pulled a table towards me. A large plan of the territory was on it, a small marker placed on one of its edge points. Fresh, blank, ready for pen marks and directions. I bent over the map, directing them accordingly. I grouped them, then placed each group of men in a place where they could fight more efficiently. The only edge we had over them was simply the fact that we knew our territory more than they did. In fact, they didn't know the territory at all. That was our fighting chance. And I was ready to use that to the best of my ability. “So group A, B, and C go here, here, and here. The rest of the group spread around. Group D goes here. And group E right behind them.” Pen marks littered the paper as I spat out instructions. Soon I was in full flow mode, pointing to groups where they should go, and sending stand-in men as backup. “Is all of that clear?” My voice was steady, commanding. They answered shabbily, some voices louder than the others. The unsteadiness of their voices annoyed me even further. “I asked if all of that is clear.” They answered in chorus this time, nodding their heads at me. At that very moment, Reece and Damon walked in, reasonable distance between them. Aria stood behind them, cowering, almost retreating, like she was scared. I looked at all three of them, and then dismissed the men. Reece and Damon walked up to me. “So what's the plan?” Reece asked, clearly humbled. I explained everything to them as quickly as I could, in summary, and told them where we would be, and how we would be fighting, since we were going to be doing most of the heavy lifting in this war. They nodded as I spoke of the plan, and we all silently agreed on what I had laid down. Their eyes were stuck on me, mine flitting between them. “I want to go with you guys.” Her head was raised now, like she had retrieved hope and strength from somewhere unknown. All three of us looked at her, bemused. “Why are you all looking at me like that? I want to go. I want to fight with you guys.” Reece chuckled. I just stared, confounded. “Well, this isn't some game where we pick the best of the best to go help us fight. I saw a little bit of your training with Damon today, and save it to say you're the best that we have right now. Of course, you're ready to go out into a battle like that.” Sarcasm dropped from my words. Her head dropped, her expression changing immediately. It wasn't defeat or confusion. It was anger. “So what are you saying then? That I can't go? That I can't fight with you guys? That I'm incompetent?” Her face was questioning. “Essentially.” I nodded towards her. I didn't know why she was doing this, but I could take a wild guess. She wanted to see what all of us saw. She wanted to know what was so special about her, and she believed war would pull whatever it was out of her. She wanted me to feed her ego, make her feel good, take her along to a war that could possibly kill her, and I wasn't going to let that happen. “Well, I want to go, and you three have to decide how to include me in this operation.” Defiance looked hot on her. “No, we do not. Retreat to your room, and Sage will bring you some food and things to help you out. You look tuckered out. You should get some rest.” With that, me and my brothers left the room, them standing behind me and mumbling to themselves concerning what awaited us. I just rolled my eyes, face palming. This was going to be the longest night of my life.
