Chapter 13: Kick It.
Aria's POV.
I opened my eyes to find myself under the sheets. I smiled, realizing I had been rocked back to sleep by Kael. He could be nice when he wanted to. I realized that now more than ever.
I got up and entered the bathroom, taking a cold shower. I needed to run some water through my hair, cool my brain down a bit. I moved my head in the shower, taking the water as it came, and taking deep breaths as I continued.
When I came out, Damon was sitting there, waiting for me. I screamed, holding onto my towel.
*What are you doing here, so early? What are doing here at all?”
“It's not as early as you think. It's 10 AM. Get up. We have a lot to get done today.” I walked towards the closet, pulling some clothes out.
I turned around, facing him squarely, my expression very clear that I wanted him out so I could get dressed. He just looked at me.
“Go on.” He nodded at me, a sly smirk on his face.
“Go on and do what? You're standing right there.” He laughed. I frowned. This was seeming harder than I thought. I walked towards him, standing before him, the height difference becoming even clearer.
“Leave. I need to get dressed.” I wagged a finger at him, holding my towel with the other.
“Fine, fine. I'll leave. Just be quick, okay? We have a lot to do today.” He walked out of the room.
I opened the door, fully dressed, and called him in. He didn't come in, only gestured for me to come out with him. I smiled, following him.
He took me out into the field, and we stood, watching the trees for a moment.
“My brother told me he already started schooling you on politics.” I nodded, my smile finally calming into a line on my face.
“Well, today we're dealing with defense. I'm going to teach you how to defend yourself in the worst of situations. Because you can't be fearless if you know you have nothing to offer, should you get hurt.” I looked at him, looking down at myself.
“I'm wonder how exactly you expect me to defend myself.” He just smiled.
“What do you weigh?” I squinted at him, confused.
“What do I weigh?”
“Yes, what do you weigh?”
“I don't really know.”
“Well, that's necessary, to know how much weight you can actually pull. But, it's okay, we'll find that out later.” He turned away.
At that moment, two men smartly pulled out a dummy. It was rubber, and had the skin color of human. It was comical. I burst out laughing, not realizing what I was doing.
“Why are you laughing?” His face was very serious. The laughing stopped immediately, and I turned to him, wondering what exactly I was going to do.
“I'm sorry.” I apologized immediately, and he nodded.
“Kick it.” I turned to him.
“What?”
“I said, kick it.”
I looked at the dummy, and then him, and back again. Was he actually serious?
“Kick it.”
Confused, I raised my leg and sent a meager kick towards the pink rubbery thing. It shook slightly, regaining its original position almost immediately. It was a sad attempt.
“Do it again.” I did it again, confusion still overwhelming me, unsure what exactly this was supposed to accomplish.
“Do it again.” This time I turned to him.
“Why exactly are we doing this?”
“Do you want to learn to defend yourself or not?” I nodded meekly, reverting back to my instruction. I kicked and kicked and kicked until my legs throbbed.
“Tackle the dummy.”I looked at him again.
“Tackle what? I can't even tackle it. It doesn't fight. That's, like, the whole point.” I was breathing heavily, fighting the pain.
“I just said, tackle the dummy. Look, if you do not want to learn, you might as well go back and get to sleeping. Because you will not learn to defend yourself if you're defending yourself with your lips. Got it?”
“Got it.”
“So, go on. Tackle it.” I looked at the dummy. My eyes ran around it, looking for where I even wanted to begin. I took the rubbery part of the chest, grabbed it, and held on to it, throwing it down.
“That wasn't a tackle. You just threw down a defenseless dummy.” He said, on the edge of a laugh. I smiled at him, looking down at what I had just done to the poor thing.
“Let's call him Nico.” The words escaped me before I could think them through.
“You're naming the enemy?” He was fighting a smile.
“He's not an enemy. You just chose to punish him by putting him up to fight me when he doesn't even have hands to throw.” He smiled at me. I'd broken the ice.
“We have a lot to do. Jokes can come later.” He had reverted back to seriousness, but I could still see signs of a smile on his face.
“Do it again. Tackle the dummy.” I kicked the pole it was standing on this time, taking a hand and hitting it, letting it fall on the floor. It bounced repeatedly this time, falling almost immediately.
“There we go. I think we're ready to start training now.” Men brought out weights once again.
“You're going to carry these and walk around the field twelve times.”
“Twelve? How? No, no, no, no, no, absolutely not.” I started, protesting. “I'm not going to start with such extreme circumstances.”
“I decide what circumstances are extreme and which ones are not.” I picked up the weights, beginning my journey of pain and torture.
One walk around the field and beads of sweat were soaking my shirt. I continued, close to tears. Twice down the field and I was nearly dying. I dropped the weights, kneeling down to beg.
“I just-I just want to breathe. Please.”
“Ten more. Chop, chop.” I nodded, rolling my eyes.
This was hard.
“Well, I am not doing this anymore.” He stepped up to me, looking down at me like I was some rat. His expression was tired, he wasn't having any of my bullshit.
“I decide when you stop. Got it?”
“Got it.” I picked up the weights and started going around the field once more. My strength not renewed, but scared into submission. At the fifth, I couldn't take it anymore. I stopped, sitting on the floor, deciding I wasn't going to get past this.
He smiled.
“Get up.”
“No.” I was tired of letting him boss me around and make me suffer.
“Get up, I said.”
“No.” Once again, I wasn't going to let him do that. He smiled.
“That will be all for today. We'll meet later this evening for you to get on with the rest of the training. This is just the beginning, and I hope you're ready for what comes next.”
