CHAPTER ELEVEN: COASTAL SANCTUARY

1516 Words
The hum of the Aston Martin's engine was the only sound cutting through the quiet late afternoon as we pulled up the winding gravel driveway. Trees gave way to a stunning, modern cedar-and-glass home perched on a cliff overlooking the grey, crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It wasn't a grand, intimidating mansion like the penthouse—it was secluded, warm, and utterly private. Julian parked the car and killed the engine. He turned in his seat, his dark eyes softening as he took me in. "We’re here, baby," he said softly, the casual warmth in his deep voice sending a sudden, delicious shock straight through my chest. My head snapped toward him, my breath catching in my throat. Baby. He had never called me that before. Not during our contract negotiations, not during our staged public appearances. But coming from his lips in the quiet intimacy of the car, it felt entirely too natural. A faint, knowing smirk tugged at the corner of Julian’s lips as he noticed my flushed cheeks. He reached across the console, his warm fingers gently cupping the side of my face. "Get used to it, babe," Julian murmured, his thumb lightly stroking my cheekbone. "Out here, there are no corporate titles. No 'Mr. Vance' and no 'Ms. Lin.' It's just you and me." "Julian..." I whispered, my heart thumping wildly against my ribs. "You can't just throw names like that around. My heart can't take it." Julian leaned in closer, his dark eyes fixed on my lips. "I mean every word of it, Maya. Now come on, let me show you the house." He stepped out of the car and walked around to open my door, extending a hand to help me down. As soon as my feet touched the gravel, Julian didn't let go. He laced his long fingers through mine, holding my hand firmly as he guided me up the wooden steps toward the front door. Inside, the cottage was breathtaking. High wooden beams, a massive stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offered an panoramic view of the ocean. The afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow across the rustic hardwood floors. "It's incredible, Julian," I said, stepping toward the glass, mesmerized by the wild beauty of the ocean. "I had no idea a place like this existed so close to the city." "I bought it three years ago when the board was pushing me to my absolute limit," Julian said, walking up behind me. He wrapped his arms smoothly around my waist, pulling my back flush against his broad chest. He rested his chin lightly on my shoulder, his warm breath fanning against my neck. "Nobody knows about this place. Not Richard, not the press. Just my personal security team, and now... you." I leaned back into his solid warmth, resting my hands over his arms where they held me secure. "Why did you bring me here, Julian?" Julian turned his head slightly, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the sensitive curve of my neck that made my toes curl. "Because in the city, every time I look at you, I have to pretend you're just part of a deal," Julian rasped, his voice dropping into a low, smoky register. "And I'm tired of pretending, baby." A shiver ran down my spine. I turned in his arms so I was facing him, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "We signed a contract, Julian," I reminded him softly, though my hands were already finding their way to the lapels of his jacket. "Rule Number Three..." "To hell with Rule Number Three," Julian growled softly, tightening his grip on my waist and lifting me effortlessly so I was sitting on the edge of the dark oak dining table behind me. He stepped between my knees, leaning in until our foreheads brushed. The sheer physical presence of him was overwhelming—masculine, protective, and completely devastating. "I tried to stay cold, Maya," Julian whispered, his thumb lightly tracing my lower lip. "I tried to tell myself that paying off your father's debt was just a strategic move. But watching you stand up to Richard at the gala... seeing you shine in that green dress... I knew I was completely finished." "Julian..." I gasped softly, my hands sliding up his chest to wrap around his neck, pulling him closer. "You're mine, babe," Julian declared, his voice full of an absolute, possessive certainty that set my blood on fire. "Not because of a piece of paper. Not because of ten million dollars. Because you belong right here with me." Before I could reply, Julian captured my lips in a deep, desperate kiss. Unlike the staged kisses for the cameras, this was pure, unadulterated passion. Julian’s hands tangled into my hair, holding me steady as he claimed my mouth with a slow, intoxicating rhythm that left me completely breathless. I pulled him tighter against me, melting into his touch, giving back every ounce of heat he poured into me. When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, we were both breathing heavily. "Tell me you feel it too, Maya," Julian demanded softly, his dark eyes searching mine with a rare, vulnerable intensity. "Tell me I'm not in this alone." I reached up, cradling his sharp jawline in my palms, looking at the powerful man who had brought the corporate world to its knees—yet was looking at me like he was begging for my heart. "You're not alone, Julian," I admitted, my voice steady and raw with truth. "I fell for you weeks ago, babe." A breathtaking, dazzling smile broke across Julian’s face—a smile so genuine and bright it completely transformed him. He let out a low laugh of pure relief, pressing a sweet, hard kiss to my forehead before wrapping me in a tight embrace. As night fell over Montauk, the wind outside picked up, sending heavy waves crashing against the cliffs below. Julian had built a roaring fire in the stone fireplace, filling the living room with a warm, amber light and the faint, cozy scent of burning pine. We sat together on the massive plush sofa in front of the hearth, wrapped in a thick wool blanket. I was curled up against Julian’s side, my head resting on his chest while his arm stayed comfortably around my shoulders, his fingers lazily twirling a strand of my hair. On the low coffee table in front of us sat two half-empty glasses of red wine and a wooden board with cheeses and fruit Julian had effortlessly put together. "So, the formidable Julian Vance actually knows how to build a fire and prep food," I teased, looking up at him with a grin. "I thought you only knew how to command boardrooms and sign multi-million dollar contracts." Julian chuckled, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head. "There are a lot of things I know how to do, baby. You're just finally getting to see the real me." "I like the real you," I said softly, tracing small circles on his chest over his black sweater. "He's much sweeter than the cold CEO in the news." "The cold CEO is for the rest of the world, babe," Julian murmured, taking my hand and kissing my knuckles one by one. "You get the man behind the suit." The peaceful moment was interrupted by the quiet buzzing of Julian's personal phone on the table. He glanced down at the screen, his eyebrows drawing together slightly when he saw the caller ID. "Is it Marcus?" I asked, feeling a subtle prickle of anxiety return. "Or Richard?" Julian reached over and picked up the phone, but instead of answering, he flipped it face down on the table and turned back to me, pulling me closer into his lap. "It doesn't matter who it is," Julian said smoothly, resting his hands on my hips. "Tonight, the rest of the world doesn't exist. It's just you, me, and this fire." I looked into his dark, devoted eyes, feeling a deep sense of security wash over me. For the first time since my father's debt threatened to destroy my life, I felt completely safe. "Okay, babe," I whispered, leaning up to kiss his jawline. "No work." Julian’s eyes darkened with affection, his hands sliding around my waist to hold me close as we watched the flames dance in the hearth. But as I rested my head back against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, a tiny voice in the back of my head warned me that reality wouldn't stay locked outside forever. Uncle Richard was still out there, plotting his next move. The press was still hungry for a scandal. And eventually, we would have to leave this coastal paradise and return to the glass towers of Manhattan. But for tonight, wrapped in Julian’s arms and listening to him call me his, I let myself believe that our love was strong enough to survive whatever war was waiting for us.
