Chapter Twenty-Two:Alexander Closer

1184 Words
The meeting had gone on for far longer than Alex wanted. By the time he closed his laptop, every muscle in his neck felt tight. Numbers. Contracts. Budgets. The usual conversations that normally demanded every ounce of his attention. Tonight, however, he had found himself glancing at the clock every few minutes. Adam was waiting. Not because he had asked Alex to hurry. Not because he expected anything. Simply because Adam was there. And somehow… That mattered more than the meeting ever could. Alex stood from his desk, loosened the top button of his shirt, and walked quietly toward the bedroom. The apartment was peaceful. When he pushed open the bedroom door, he couldn’t help smiling. Adam was stretched comfortably across the bed, propped against the pillows with his phone in his hands. His brow furrowed in concentration for a moment before he suddenly laughed softly at whatever was playing on the screen. Alex leaned against the doorway for a second, simply watching. He didn’t interrupt. He liked seeing Adam relaxed. It was becoming one of his favorite sights. Without looking up, Adam spoke. “You can stop staring now.” Alex chuckled. “I wasn’t staring.” “You’ve been standing there for at least ten seconds.” “So you knew I was there?” “I heard the door.” Alex crossed the room. “I was hoping my entrance was more impressive.” Adam finally looked up, smiling. “It was dramatic enough.” Alex climbed onto the bed beside him. “What are you watching?” “Anime.” “I gathered that much.” Adam laughed. “I’ve been catching up on a series.” Alex looked genuinely surprised. “I didn’t know you liked anime.” “You don’t know everything about me.” “I’d like to.” The words came out before he thought about them. Adam’s smile softened. “I suppose you’ll learn.” Alex shifted closer until their legs rested comfortably beside one another beneath the blanket. Without thinking, his feet brushed lightly against Adam’s. Neither of them moved away. Instead, they settled naturally into the shared space. Alex slipped one arm around Adam’s waist. The gesture felt familiar now. Comfortable. Almost instinctive. He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss against Adam’s shoulder. Then another near the side of his neck. Nothing hurried. Just quiet affection. “How was the meeting?” Adam asked. Alex sighed dramatically. “Exhausting.” “That bad?” “Worse.” Adam laughed. “I’m sorry.” Alex rested his forehead lightly against Adam’s shoulder. “I’ve decided I don’t want to think about business anymore tonight.” “No?” “No.” He smiled. “I just want to be your big spoon for the rest of the evening.” Adam laughed again, the sound warm and effortless. “That’s quite the plan.” “I think it’s an excellent one.” “I might agree.” Alex shifted behind him until Adam rested comfortably against his chest. The position felt… right. His fingers drifted almost automatically into Adam’s hair, gently combing through the soft strands. He smiled to himself. “I really do this a lot.” “You do.” “Does it bother you?” Adam shook his head immediately. “No.” “It relaxes me.” Alex’s smile widened. “I was hoping you’d say that.” His fingertips traced lightly through Adam’s hair before tucking a loose strand behind his ear. “So…” Alex asked quietly. “Did you enjoy this weekend?” Adam didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he leaned back a little more comfortably against him. “Mmm.” The soft hum carried a hint of teasing that immediately caught Alex’s attention. “Mmm?” Adam smiled. “I liked everything.” The answer was simple. But the way he said it… Relaxed. Content. Almost playful. It made something warm settle in Alex’s chest. “I’ve never heard you answer like that before.” Adam looked over his shoulder with an amused smile. “Like what?” “That little ‘mm-hmm.’” Adam’s cheeks colored slightly. “I didn’t realize I did.” “I noticed.” “You notice everything.” “When it comes to you…” Alex smiled. “I seem to.” Adam looked away, smiling to himself. Alex continued absentmindedly playing with his hair. “What else do you like?” Adam blinked. “What do you mean?” “You said you like when I play with your hair.” “I do.” Alex tilted his head thoughtfully. “What else makes you feel comfortable?” Adam thought for a moment. “I like when you check on me.” Alex listened quietly. “I like our conversations.” Another pause. “And…” He smiled shyly. “I like when you make breakfast.” Alex laughed softly. “So food.” “It’s a very convincing argument.” “And…” Adam reached up, gently resting his hand over Alex’s where it lay around his waist. “I like this.” Alex looked down at their hands. “This?” “Just…” Adam searched for the right words. “…being close without feeling like either of us has to rush.” Alex grew quiet. That was exactly what he wanted too. He turned Adam gently so they were facing each other. Their eyes met. No words were necessary. Alex leaned forward slowly. Adam closed the remaining distance. Their kiss was unhurried, warm, and familiar now, carrying none of the uncertainty of their first one. When they drew apart, they stayed close enough that their foreheads almost touched. Alex smiled. “I’ve been trying very hard not to rush you.” Adam reached up and lightly brushed a thumb across Alex’s cheek. “I know.” “And I appreciate it.” Alex searched his expression carefully. “I want you to feel comfortable with me.” “I do.” The answer came without hesitation. “I really do.” Relief washed quietly over Alex. He kissed Adam’s forehead this time before settling back against the headboard. Adam naturally rested against him again. Alex resumed absentmindedly stroking his hair. Every now and then, Adam let out a small, contented hum as he relaxed. The sound made Alex smile every single time. Outside, the city continued its endless rhythm. Inside the penthouse, everything was still. Alex realized that when he had invited Adam for the weekend, he had imagined expensive dinners or elaborate plans. Instead, the memories he would keep were much simpler. Morning coffee. Shared meals. Paint-stained hands. Laughter in the kitchen. Movies neither of them truly watched. And quiet evenings like this, with Adam tucked comfortably against him, trusting him enough to simply relax. It wasn’t excitement that filled Alex’s heart. It was peace. And for a man who had spent his entire life chasing success, he was beginning to understand that peace might have been the thing he had been searching for all along.
