Chapter 2

Ella's POV: The next day, when Marie arrived at the office, the morning meeting was already halfway over. This project had originally been assigned to both of us to lead together. In my previous life, she'd done everything she could to secure the team leader position. She had even tried to curry favor with our nearly fifty-year-old manager, hoping to push me out of the running. But she'd never expected that he wouldn't fall for her tactics and would still choose me as team leader. Already fed up with her behavior, the manager slammed a folder onto the conference table. "Marie, do you even want this job anymore? It's already half past ten. Do you have any idea how important today's meeting is?" Normally timid and obedient, Marie exploded this time. She grabbed her coffee and threw it straight into the manager's face. "So what if I don't? You short-sighted old fool. You may not recognize my worth, but plenty of wealthy heirs do. Once I start my own business, I'll buy out this tiny little company sooner or later." Everyone in the conference room stared at her in stunned silence. No one had ever imagined she would speak to the manager that way. "Marie, this is the workplace. You need to watch what you say and do." I gently tugged on her sleeve, deliberately provoking her further. Just as I expected, she jerked her arm away, letting every ounce of resentment she'd harbored toward me spill out. "Ella, who do you think you are lecturing me? You have no right to tell me what to do! From now on, you can stay right here as an ordinary employee, slaving away for this pathetic little company for the rest of your life!" She looked down at me with her chin held high, her face twisted with arrogance. Her performance was even better than I'd hoped. "Marie, have you lost your mind? Did you win the lottery or something? If you offend Mr. Carter like this, you'll never work in this industry again. Please apologize." Several coworkers stepped forward to reason with her. After working together for years, everyone knew exactly what she was capable of. Unless she had suddenly come into an incredible fortune, there was no way she'd dare speak like this. "Hmph... You people think too small. You're all so petty and narrow-minded. As a matter of fact, one of the country's wealthiest men has already proposed to me. I'll be marrying into high society in just a few days. "Why would I care about a dead-end job like this?" She let out another contemptuous snort, her eyes shining with pride. "If any of you are tired of working here, just ask nicely. Once my company goes public, maybe I'll offer you a job. It'll pay a hundred times better than anything you make here." She deliberately emphasized her final sentence. The manager's face turned red with fury. Moments later, he fired her on the spot in front of everyone. While a few coworkers immediately began flattering her, I leaned back in my chair and quietly watched the spectacle unfold. A moment later, Marie clapped her hands to get everyone's attention. "Three days from now, I'm inviting every one of you to a dinner party at my estate." After saying that, she looked directly at me. "Ella, make sure you bring your parents too. Your family has always struggled financially. You're old enough now. It's time they saw how the other half lives. "And try to stop wearing counterfeit designer clothes. It's embarrassing just looking at you." I frowned. "My parents have always given me the very best they could. What gives you the right to speak about them like that? And besides... Who told you my dress was fake?"
