Ella's POV:
Marie's face turned deathly pale. She had never imagined the handbags covering that entire wall would cost so much.
"There's no need to force yourself, Marie. If you don't really want them, you don't have to buy them."
I deliberately prodded her, then nodded toward the handbag I'd wanted from the beginning.
"If she's passing on it, I'll take that one instead."
"Who says I'm not buying them? I could spend a hundred times this much if I wanted to!"
My words struck her pride like a knife.
She clenched her jaw, so tightly her teeth almost ground together. Turning to Caleb, she slipped into his arms and spoke in a soft, pleading voice.
"Darling, didn't you say you'd buy me a whole collection of designer bags after the house transfer is finished? I want these today. Will you buy them for me?"
Every pair of eyes in the boutique shifted toward Caleb. He casually wrapped an arm around her shoulders, his expression calm and reassuring.
"Darling, I told you. We just closed a huge business deal today and transferred five million dollars to a client. My black card has already reached its monthly spending limit. I can't charge this much right now.
"I'll have my assistant come back tomorrow and pick everything up for you. I promise."
I listened to him lie with a perfectly straight face and almost laughed out loud.
"Or, if you really can't wait... just pay with your own card for now. As soon as midnight passes, I'll transfer back double the amount."
Marie was so intoxicated by his sweet promises that she completely lost her judgment. Without a second thought, she opened every loan app she had and borrowed a total of five hundred thousand dollars.
Half an hour later, after the funds arrived, she proudly slapped her bank card onto the counter.
"Go ahead. Run the payment. There's more than enough."
The sales associates exchanged uneasy glances. Both of them clearly understood what was happening.
Trying to help, the same associate gently asked one final time.
"Are you absolutely certain you'd like to purchase all of these? If you've changed your mind, we can easily remove a few items."
Marie completely misunderstood her good intentions.
"What? Are you looking down on me? Keep talking like that and I'll report you to your manager. Who do you think you are?"
Standing beside her, Caleb shifted awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck.
Once the payment was approved, Marie proudly gathered her shopping bags and turned toward me with a smug smile.
"See that? That's what real wealth looks like. You could spend your entire life climbing the ladder at that pathetic little company and still never afford even one of these bags.
"Get down on your knees and beg nicely. I might even give you the one you wanted. How does that sound?"
I smiled faintly. "You'd better take good care of them. You might need to sell them secondhand someday."
"What did you just say? You think you're funny, don't you? You've got some nerve for a broke nobody!" Marie shouted after me.
Caleb nodded beside her. "Don't waste your time on someone so selfish and jealous. She's not even in the same league as us.
"Come on. Let's go celebrate with a nice dinner."
I walked away without another glance. The two of them really were made for each other.
*****
Soon, the day of Marie's dinner party arrived.
The moment my coworkers stepped out of their cars, they all fell silent. Towering before them stood a magnificent seven-story mansion.
Everyone stared in amazement. One after another, they began whispering about how lucky Marie was. She really had married into extraordinary wealth.
"Marie, don't forget about us now that you're rich!"
"Yeah!"
"Ask your husband if he can help us find better jobs."
"We're all ready to leave that old company behind."
As everyone showered her with compliments, Marie looked more pleased with herself by the second.
She proudly held up a keyring for everyone to admire. Then she stepped to the front door and slid a key into the lock.
Before she could even turn it... the massive front door swung open from the inside.
A woman stood in the doorway, frowning.
"Who are all of you? And why are you standing outside my house?"
