I looked at Alpha coon. "Why are you showing this to me. I learned all about the Royal Family in school."
He cleared his throat before answering. “You are here in our pack because I was very good friends with the King and Queen. What you read in that file was an agreement that I had made with them, that I never thought would come to pass. However, when the war began after the m******e of the palace” he paused and the pain in his face was very evident, “the King and Queen were forced to leave the castle. word got out that the queen was with child. A wolf hunt was issued. The King and Queen knew that after what the enemy had done to their oldest child that the one unborn would face the same fate and protecting it became their priority. There HAD to be an heir. Only the royal bloodline can successfully run the kingdom. -“
“But they haven’t been in power for 18 years or more and there have not been wars and from what I know the wolf packs are stronger and healthier than they ever were. So obviously we don’t need them.” I look around the room after my statement. Coon takes a breath and looks to my mother. “Clara, its all lies. A façade. Yes, we are strong but even this pack has become weaker just like other packs. There are only a handful of strong packs. The rest are falling apart. Being attacked by rogue Alphas. There is famine, and a huge decrease in the wolf population. Have you not noticed that the nursery that once held 10 or more babes a year now holds one maybe two? Without the royal bloodline ruling fertility has gone down. More and more wolves are going feral as well. Feral wolves used to be a thing of the past.”
“We put a false front up to keep our packs spirits up Clara. But it is not going well outside these walls.” Cory spoke with a voice that said in the last 2 years after graduating he had seen some things. He sounded older. His face was somber set. Luna Candace at that moment approached me a put a hand on my shoulder. I immediately felt calmer, I hadn’t realized I was getting overwhelmed. She was projecting her goddess given Luna gift on me. Coon stood and spoke. “Clara you are the last and only living heir to the throne. You were the unborn child. You are of royal blood and as of 8am this morning your presence here was found out by the Usurper. A decree was put out and as we speak an army is outside our walls waiting for us to turn you over to them. or they will kill every person in this pack.” At his last words my heart clinched. I knew I should be reacting stronger, but I felt so calm. Candace was great at her job. I looked at my family again. This time they all looked back, and I could tell it was the truth.
I told you we were more than just warriors. I could feel it. I stood and pushed the Lunas hand off me gently. “I appreciate what you are trying to do but I need to be able to feel this to be clear of mind.” I smiled gently at her, and she nodded and walked back to her Mate. “Why would you not tell me who I am sooner? How did they find out? and how long do you have?” I asked the questions calmly. Cory was the one to answer me. “It was a request from your mother that you grow up with as much normalcy as possible. She did not wish for you to know or have your childhood torn from you. They wanted you to be happy.” I felt my eyes burn. They died, the Queen and King. They were slaughtered in front of a huge crowd at the palace. But they also had a baby then, it had been stillborn. It must have been faked so nobody would look for me. I had parents. I was loved and taken care of by them. So why did I feel so sad over loosing parents I never knew I had. This couldn’t be real.
“As for how they found out, we believe yesterday when you were being trained and we drugged your wolf is when they found out. They have spies everywhere and we tried to be careful. But we had to drug your wolf so we could run the royal power test on you to know for sure how strong you were.” Coon sat back in his chair and Candace held his shoulder as he continued, “Clara, we believe we have a spy here and that spy was present at your testing and saw that you tested above everyone we have ever tested. They saw you endure longer and harder in the fighting than anyone else. You ran through 4 of our best fighters. And fought for hours. In your human form without any outside help from you r wolf. That is a big feat even for a royal. You have not had your first run after turning 18. But we believe your wolf would have shown a great strength as well in that. We knew we wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret for long. That’s why we placed you with the best fighters in our pack. So, you would be prepared when the time came. We only had the people we trusted the most there yesterday, so it pains us to know one of them was not worthy of our faith.”
My father spoke next. “Clara, we made an agreement, you need to know you are more important than any pack. We are willing to sacrifice everyone to protect you. We have already begun evacuating some members throughout the secret tunnels. We will save as many as we can. But you must survive. You must get away. You must make it to the rebel pack in the mountains. There is a secret army that has been being built and prepared to fight with you to take the Usurper down.”
I shook my head. “No, I will not allow that. I cannot allow it. You will continue to evacuate. But I will not hide. I will turn myself over. Then I will run. My wolf seems confident that once we are there, we will be able to escape.” She had been telling me how we would do it. They all started talking at once about how I couldn’t do that, and I didn’t understand. That I needed to leave and that the fate of all wolves was at stake. I was trying to listen, but my head was getting foggy. I felt off. I felt a pull, like I needed to go. Like I forgot something important and needed to find it. Lean what’s happening to us?
I do not know Clara, but I feel like I am buzzing. Something out there is affecting us.
Could it be the danger you sensed?
Possibly, it would make sense.
“Stop!” Everyone got quiet at my outburst. “Please, something is off. I don’t feel right and neither does my wolf.” Mother looked me over while everyone else started moving. Alpha Coon went into a mind link with who knows, as Cory came across to me and my family. Candace was out of the room. “Look we just got word the rogues are beginning to approach the gate, time is running out, we must act now.” He grabbed my arm and Anthony grabbed the other and they started to drag me away. Mother and father just stood there and looked worried. Mother waved at me and blew a kiss. We entered the hall and I pulled free. “No, I will not let you all die for me!”
“Clara please, this is bigger than us. We are nothing compared to what is at stake if you do not take the throne. Please think about that.” Anthony begged me with his eyes. I shook my head as I felt the tears well up in my eyes. “No, this isn’t real, I am not a royal Anthony I’m just me.”
“Clara, look at me” Cory took my hands and I looked at him. He stared at me hard but gently. “All the children and elderly are gone. The schools evacuated. All that’s left in the pack are our fighters and higher members who volunteered for this. The pack will survive. We might not, I wont lie to you. And that is fine. We are choosing this. It is our choice. Now, don’t let our sacrifice be for nothing Clara. Because we will fight, it’s too late not to.” I stared at him, and then I heard a loud explosion. “They’ve broken through the gate!” we hear someone yell in the pack house. Anthony grabbed my face making me look at him. “Don’t let this define you, Clara. Stay strong, fearless, gentle, and kind. You may not realize it yet, but this is your fate. I hope I see you again. We will never regret having you in our lives. We love you, Clara. Now run to the mountain, and don’t look back. Don’t stop. Get to the top, they will find you then. GO!” He then shoved me into a tunnel that dropped off into a steep incline. The last thing I saw was them turn and run away from where they dropped me as something was thrown over the hole. Darkness enveloped me. Those cowards! Tricking me like this.
