I stood perplexed, feeling my heart demolished. I gasped for breath, feeling the weight of the earth pressed down on my chest. This must be a trance. Emily, my best friend, was wrapping her body around my husband. What was transpiring?
I felt rooted to the spot, my hands trembling. Is this? No, it can't be real. Maybe she's just soothing his distress on my behalf. But how is that even pleasant to the ear? They were in an intimate position.
"Baby, are you okay? What happened to you?" she asked, her voice laced with perturbation and affection, her hands hovering around him.
BABY? The word dawned on me like a fang scratching my soul as I felt my vision hazy, the earth shaking beneath my feet. I choked on my breath, tears slowly welling up in my eyes. Ethan is in a relationship with my best friend? How could they both betray me?
So this has been going on!
Emily noticed my presence and glared at me with disgust, her eyes flickering with jealousy. "Who are you, and what are you doing in my husband's room?"
Wow! Husband? This must be a joke! I just left for one year! Her blazing gaze pierced through mine, demanding answers.
I felt as if my tongue had been ripped out, an invisible lump stuck in my throat. I couldn't move or utter a single word. I parted my lips slowly. "I... I... I am t.he"
"She's the new nurse assigned for al... sir Ethan's treatment," Lambert's cold voice suddenly cut through the tense air, interrupting my speech as he stroded towards us.
A wave of relief immediately washed over Emily's eyes, and she snapped towards Lambert, "Why didn't you inform me he was getting a nurse? I would have gotten a better one."
Lambert almost rolled his eyes in their sockets and said flatly, "You were busy with your cosmetic job; I couldn't disturb you."
Cosmetic what? Another bomb hit me hard, like a ton of bricks.
She was busy with what?
This can't be real; first my husband, now cosmetic?
My heart reeled in horror as I stared at her, dumbfounded. This was literally my plan before my death; I had told her about launching a skincare product!
Did she do it on my behalf?
Her cold sneer suddenly brought me back to reality as she tossed her hair aside dramatically and said, "Oh, please! I have workers; it's not like I'm doing it all by myself. Lambert, that shouldn't be an excuse, or do you just not want me to know?"
Rage was evident in Lambert's eyes, which he was trying too hard not to evoke. "The deed has already been done; at least she gave Sir Lambert a medicine that immediately serene his attack," he replied flatly, trying so hard to yank off his frustration.
Judging from Lambert's expression, I'm not sure he's in support of all this.
Emily betrayed me. I stood like a ghost, powerless, feeling my heart being attacked by invisible arrows. Emily was my childhood best friend; she always spoke highly of my relationship with Ethan, so this was it!
Has she always loved him?
"Will you just stand there like a statue? Leave or hide... just do something, get out!" she yelled at me, her high-pitched voice sounding boisterously across the room.
I reeled back in shock, staring at her in horror. Emily isn't the person I knew anymore; it feels like my death brought ultimate peace to her, giving her more room to be with him. Gosh! My heart was blazing with betrayal.
"Emily, you can't just walk her out; she needs to give sir his necessary medications," Lambert says on my behalf, his eyes down, avoiding contact with Emily.
I guess he despises her more than I do right now.
Emily's lips slowly curved up, glaring at her neatly polished nails. "Lambert, I think it's time for you to let go. Alicia is no longer alive; it's high time you start recognizing me as Ethan's future wife."
Future wife? What a shameless wolf! Lambert's face scrunched in rage, and he blurted out, "That will be something I can never do. Alicia was a friend, mother, cousin, and a boss everyone wishes to have. I can never betray her like you did, not now, not ever," he yelled nonchalantly.
My heart slowly filled with warmth, tears welling up in my eyes as I stared at Lambert; he still recognized me as his omega.
"Well, too bad she's dead and buried. I'm the one in charge now, and let me tell you something; if Ethan wakes up, I will inform him about the disrespect you just showed me, and he will have your ass fired," Emily sneered bitterly, crossing her arms over her chest.
Lambert ran his hands across his short black hair in frustration and said bitterly, "Dead and buried? Wow, I wish Alicia was here to hear what you are saying."
My heart yanked at my soul as the tears I was holding slowly poured down my cheeks. "I am here, Lambert. I am just broken, powerless, and weak. Life is so unfair to me; it cheated on me," I thought bitterly.
I quickly brushed my fingers across my cheeks, wiping the tears softly as I sniffed.
"Well... I'm sorry for being here. I will go to my room now and wait until he wakes up so I can start treating him with antibiotics," I managed to say, my voice hoarse.
"Fine, I will take you to your room so you can get some rest, and the maids will inform you when sir wakes up," Lambert concluded. I nodded in response as I walked towards the door meticulously, feeling my muscles strain at every step.
I needed to leave her side before I did something crazy! Lambert took a quick glance at Emily, who was sitting on the bed with her legs crossed majestically, and strode close to the door. He twisted the doorknob. I almost jumped out, choking on air, as the thought of me and Emily breathing the same air made my skin crawl.
"Follow me," Lambert's voice immediately diverted my thoughts and led me away from our rooms, heading towards the visitor lounge.
We were passing through the cold, frosty corridor when I felt an object slam against my head.
