The Smell Of Cedar And Ozone

771 Words
SARA: I don’t sleep. The police officers’ words ring in my ears like a continuous alarm. Shoot on sight. Stop their breeding. I spend the entire night sitting on the edge of my mattress, staring at the muted neon lights leaking through my window blinds. My hands tremble as I scroll through job boards on my phone, searching for low-profile openings in cities three states over. I need a plan. I need a deposit for a new studio, a fresh forged ID, and a new job before I vanish again. Running blindly without a safety net is how you get caught, or worse, end up dead. By 5:00 AM, I’ve mapped out a target city and saved three potential apartment listings. One more pay check, I tell myself, wiping my bleary eyes as I lace up my boots. Just hold on for two more weeks, get paid, and slide away like a shadow. The morning air is crisp and bitter, but stepping into the warm, roasting-coffee scent of the cafe instantly grounds me. I put on my apron, tie my hair back, and lock into my routine. Wipe down the counters. Grind the espresso beans. Restock the pastry display. The rhythmic, mundane tasks act as an anchor against the panic clawing at my throat. At 7:30 AM, the morning rush begins. “Double shot espresso for Mark,” I call out, sliding the cup across the granite counter with a small, practiced smile. The brass bell above the front door chimes. Normally, I don’t look up right away. Dozens of humans push through those doors every hour, bringing in the smell of wet wool, cheap cologne, and morning rain. But this time, the air in the shop instantly changes. The cozy smell of roasted hazelnuts and steamed milk is violently ripped away, replaced by a scent that freezes the blood in my veins. Cedarwood. Crushed pine. Pure, electric ozone. My heart slams into my ribcage so hard it takes my breath away. My hands lock onto the wooden edge of the counter, the room spinning as every wolf instinct I’ve spent three years burying violently roars back to life. Slowly, terrified that my mind is playing a sick trick on me, I look up. Framed in the doorway, blocking out the morning sunlight, are two massive figures. Broad shoulders. Impeccably tailored dark coats. Sharp, predatory features that look so much like the boys I grew up with, yet hardened into absolute, dangerous perfection. On the left stands Zayne. His dark hair is slicked back, his jaw locked tight, and his storm-gray eyes burn with a lethal, suffocating intensity that pins me to the spot. On the right stands Kyle. A careless strand of golden hair falls over his forehead, a faint, razor-thin smirk touching his lips, but the heat in his golden eyes is cold enough to freeze bone. They aren’t looking at the menu. They aren’t looking at the cafe. Their gaze is locked entirely on me. “Sara,” Zayne rasps. His voice isn’t a human whisper; it carries the heavy, reverberating weight of an Alpha command that makes every nerve in my body scream to drop to my knees. I take a frantic step back, hitting the espresso machine, sending a stack of paper cups cascading onto the floor. “N-no...” I stammer, my voice barely a squeak. “How...?” Before I can take another breath, before I can even think to run for the back door, the air in the room shatters. An invisible, ancient pulse erupts in my chest, a golden, searing thread snapping violently into place, tying my very soul to theirs. The force of it knocks the wind out of me. It’s a mate bond. But it’s wrong. It’s impossible. It isn’t pulling me to one of them, it’s pulling me to both. In a blur of terrifying, superhuman speed, both twins vault over the granite counter in a single leap. The glass display shatters under their weight. Before the customers can even scream, Zayne’s heavy, calloused hand grips my waist, while Kyle’s fingers lock around my wrist, pulling me tightly between their towering frames. Their scent completely engulfs me, drowning out the city, drowning out my sanity. Their eyes flash a vivid, glowing amber as they lean into the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply. ”MINE,” Zayne and Kyle growl in absolute, synchronized unison, their deep voices vibrating through my very bones. My eyes widen in pure, unadulterated horror. Bound to two Alphas. And the nightmare I spent three years running from has just trapped me in its jaws.
