Chapter 8: Heartfelt Expressions

718 Words
The decision to come to the Philippines had turned out to be one of the best choices Soo-jin had ever made. The vibrancy of life here, the warmth of the people, and the new experiences had infused her days with a sense of purpose and excitement. As Valentine's Day approached, the air was filled with a unique kind of magic, and both Soo-jin and Maria could feel it. Valentine's Day was a spectacle in Manila. Streets were adorned with heart-shaped decorations, and vendors sold flowers and chocolates on every corner. The buzz of love and celebration was palpable. Although Soo-jin and Maria weren't in a romantic relationship, they were caught up in the festive atmosphere, eager to share and learn about each other's traditions. "Valentine's Day is a big deal here," Maria explained with a smile as they walked to their classroom. "Couples celebrate with romantic dinners, flowers, and chocolates. It's also a day for friends and family to show their appreciation for each other." Soo-jin nodded, her eyes twinkling with curiosity. "In Korea, it's mostly the girls who give chocolates to the boys on Valentine's Day. Then, a month later, on White Day, March 14th, the boys return the favor with sweets or gifts. It's a way to express mutual affection." Maria's eyes widened in surprise. "Really? That's so interesting! We don't have White Day here. It must be fun to have a follow-up celebration like that." They entered the classroom, where Valentine's decorations added a festive touch. Today's lesson, appropriately, was about Valentine's Day. Maria started the class with a warm greeting, and soon the conversation shifted to the cultural differences in celebrating the day of love. "Let's talk about Valentine's Day traditions in different countries," Maria suggested. "It's fascinating to see how love is celebrated around the world." As the discussion flowed, one student raised a hand. "Teacher Maria, is love a noun or a verb?" Maria paused, considering the question. "Love is a noun. It refers to a feeling or an emotion." Soo-jin, seated nearby, raised her hand politely. "Actually, love can also be a verb. It's something you do. You love someone, you show love through actions." Maria turned to Soo-jin, her eyes lighting up with intrigue. "That's a great point, Soo-jin. You're right, love can be both. It's a feeling and an action." The class murmured in agreement, and Maria looked at Soo-jin with a newfound admiration. Their eyes met, and a silent understanding passed between them. There was something about Soo-jin's perspective that Maria found incredibly refreshing and insightful. After class, Soo-jin hesitated for a moment, then reached into her bag. "Maria, I have something for you." Maria looked curious as Soo-jin pulled out a small card and a beautifully wrapped chocolate bar. "I spent last night writing this for you. Happy Valentine's Day." Maria's cheeks flushed a delicate pink as she accepted the card and chocolate. "Soo-jin, this is so sweet. Usually, it's the men who give gifts here. This is a wonderful surprise." Their fingers brushed as Soo-jin handed over the card, and both felt a jolt, an electric connection that made their hearts race. They stood there, suddenly conscious of the closeness between them, the air thick with unspoken emotions. Maria opened the card, her eyes scanning the heartfelt message inside. She looked up, her eyes misty with gratitude. "Thank you, Soo-jin. This means a lot to me." Soo-jin smiled shyly, her own cheeks warm. "I'm glad you like it. You've been so kind and supportive. I wanted to show my appreciation." For a moment, they were both enveloped in a bubble of mutual affection and understanding. The awkwardness of the situation melted away, leaving behind a tender connection that felt both new and incredibly special. "Let's go celebrate," Maria suggested softly. "I know a great place where we can get some coffee and talk more about our Valentine's traditions." Soo-jin nodded eagerly, her heart light with the promise of a beautiful day ahead. As they walked out into the bustling streets of Manila, side by side, they felt the warmth of a bond that was growing stronger with each passing moment. Valentine's Day had brought them closer, weaving their lives together in a delicate dance of friendship and something more, something that was slowly beginning to bloom.
