Chapter 3: Reflections and Revelations

930 Words
The following day, Maria entered the International Language Institute, her heart still warmed by the previous day's adventures with Soo-jin. She couldn’t wait to see her student and friend again, eager to continue their lessons and bond. However, as soon as Soo-jin walked into the classroom, Maria sensed that something was different. Soo-jin's usually bright eyes seemed clouded with a distant worry. She moved slowly, as if weighed down by an invisible burden. Her cheerful demeanor was replaced by a quiet, contemplative silence that struck Maria immediately. "Good morning, Soo-jin," Maria greeted, her voice gentle but filled with concern. "Good morning, Teacher Maria," Soo-jin replied, her smile faint and forced. Maria decided to address the change directly. "Soo-jin, is everything alright? You seem a bit off today." Soo-jin looked down at her hands, fidgeting with the edge of her notebook. "I'm fine," she said softly, but Maria could see through the facade. "Soo-jin, you can talk to me. If something is bothering you, maybe I can help," Maria urged, her voice full of sincerity. Soo-jin took a deep breath, her shoulders slumping slightly. "It's just... I have a lot on my mind. This year off from university was supposed to be a break, but I'm feeling more lost than ever." Maria listened intently, her heart aching for Soo-jin. She knew the pressures of Korean society were immense, but hearing it directly from Soo-jin made it all the more real. "I don't know what I want to do next," Soo-jin continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "In Korea, everything is about being the best, about succeeding and making your family proud. But I don't even know if I'm on the right path. I’m just learning English now, but what if it's not enough?" Maria reached out and gently placed her hand on Soo-jin's. "Soo-jin, it's okay to feel uncertain. You don’t have to have everything figured out right now." Soo-jin looked up, her eyes meeting Maria's. "How do you stay so calm, so sure of yourself? It feels like everyone back home is racing ahead, and I'm just... stuck." Maria thought for a moment before responding. "In the Philippines, we have a saying: 'Bahala na.' It means to trust in what happens, to go with the flow and have faith that things will work out. Life isn't always about being the best or having a clear path. Sometimes it's about the journey, the experiences, and finding joy in the small moments." Soo-jin listened, her expression softening. "But what if I make the wrong choice? What if I disappoint everyone?" Maria squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You can't live your life based on others' expectations. You need to find what makes you happy, what fulfills you. And it’s okay to make mistakes along the way. They’re part of learning and growing." Soo-jin sighed, feeling a bit of the weight lift from her shoulders. "I wish I could be as relaxed as you, Maria. Your outlook is so different from what I'm used to." Maria smiled warmly. "It's not always easy, but I've learned that life is too short to be constantly worried about what might happen. Focus on what makes you happy now, and the rest will follow." Their conversation was interrupted by the bell, signaling the start of their lesson. Soo-jin seemed to perk up a bit, her worries momentarily set aside as they delved into their studies. Maria tailored the lesson to be more engaging, incorporating elements of Filipino culture that she knew Soo-jin enjoyed. As the class progressed, Maria shared a story about the traditional Filipino fiesta, a celebration of community and joy that often lasts for days. "It's about coming together, celebrating life, and enjoying the moment," Maria explained. "It’s something I think you’d love, Soo-jin." Soo-jin's eyes lit up slightly. "That sounds wonderful. It’s so different from the constant rush and competition back home." "Exactly," Maria said, nodding. "It's a reminder that sometimes we need to slow down and appreciate the present. There's a lot of beauty in just being here, now." After the lesson, Soo-jin lingered once again. This time, her hesitation was different—it was hopeful, as if she was ready to confide more. "Maria, thank you for today. Your words mean a lot to me," Soo-jin said earnestly. "I'm always here for you, Soo-jin. As your teacher and your friend," Maria replied, feeling a deep sense of fulfillment. Soo-jin hesitated before speaking again. "Would you help me figure things out? I think I need someone like you, someone who can see life differently." Maria smiled, her heart full. "Of course, Soo-jin. We'll figure it out together." As they walked out of the institute, the sun casting a warm glow over them, Maria felt a sense of purpose and connection. She realized that her role as a teacher was evolving, becoming something more profound. She was not only teaching English but also sharing a piece of her heart, helping Soo-jin navigate the complexities of life. Soo-jin, for her part, felt a renewed sense of hope. With Maria by her side, she believed she could find her way, even if the path was unclear. The friendship and guidance Maria offered were more valuable than any lesson, giving her the strength to face her uncertainties. And so, as the day ended and the evening lights of Manila began to twinkle, Maria and Soo-jin walked together, ready to face whatever came next. Their journey had only just begun, but already it was filled with the promise of understanding, support, and the beautiful possibility of what lay ahead.
