Chapter Five

2019 Words
Alexander I watched Genesis' retreating back as she carried herself to her room. After she had gone to the cellar, Cedric and I stayed upstairs. I glanced over at him, sending my murderous thoughts to him.  “Very funny.” Cedric grinned.  “She looks like she got hit by a truck.” I commented.  “She has some seriously strong mental walls.” Cedric added.  “Do you not understand the concept of privacy?” I frowned. Cedric gave me a shrug. “I want to know what my mate is like. It also soothes my gargoyle wen we know she is safe.” I rolled my eyes.  “Come,” I nodded towards the living room away from the bedrooms. I took a seat on the sofa while Cedric sat across from me on the armchair.  “You know...what if she has other mates?” I asked hesitantly. Cedric’s eyes widened.  “It’s possible. But I wouldn’t bet on it. If she did she would have met them by now. You don’t buy that being a human shite do you?” Cedric laughed darkly. I shook my head.  “Of course not, her scent is too electrifying to even come close to being human. You know what she is, don’t you?” I pressed. Cedric smirked, his hand coming up to ruffle his onyx hair.  “Wouldn’t you like to know.” I growled. My leviathan hissed in my head, he was desperate to meet his mate, and with our weakened sense of smell, it’s hard to pinpoint her species.  “We need to get this case moving.” Cedric changes the topic, his face taking on a hard mask. My phone rang in my pocket effectively grabbing my attention, I pulled it out and answered without looking at the ID.  “Agent Alexander Goodwin.” I answer.  “Alex? Where’s Cedric? He hasn’t answered my calls,” Christa’s nasally voice echoed from the speaker. I cringed away from the phone as she continued ranting and raving.  “Christa-” She spoke louder.  “Christa? Sweetheart listen.” She didn’t, her volume continued to increase as she ranted. I shot Cedric a glare, he simply smirked and leaned back in his chair. My phone started beeping, letting me know that there was another call on the line.  “Christa, listen I’ve got a work call to take, we’ll call you later.” I hung up her call just as she began to scream in frustration. My ears rung, that banshee did have a set of lungs on her. Answering the other line I sigh in relief when I hear Eric’s voice on the other line.  “Alexander? Good, I couldn't get in contact with Genesis. Where is she?”  “I believe that she is currently sleeping.”  “That damn- she’s got to stop using those potions. Listen, tell her that I got the samples and to call me back asap. In the meantime I’ll be dispatching two more agents to your location.” Eric explained. “Two more agents for what? We should be fine on our own. There’s no need to send anymore help.” Eric sighed through the phone, this couldn’t be good.  “Listen, you’re going to need the extra help. If my suspicions are correct it’ll be too dangerous with just the three of you.” Cedric and I shared a look.  “For now don’t leave the cabin, don’t go out alone, and keep your phones on. That is an order.” Before I could ask any more questions Eric hung up.  “Well this certainly isn’t good. What do you think it could be? I mean, at most it could just be a rogue vampire. You know how they are, they always want to go off and take what they want.”  “If Eric is claiming that it would be more than that, then we need to be careful.” Cedric stood and left. I sighed, leaning back in my chair. This was becoming far too complicated. What could we be up against that could warrant the need for two others? Pulling out my laptop and notebook I started searching through the company database for anything that could give us a lead.  I spent the next few hours reading up on vampires and anything that resembled them.  Genesis's scent drifted towards me as she approached.  “You’re awake?” I asked keeping my back towards her as I finished writing. She hummed behind me, turning, I find her rubbing her eyes with a yawn. Her hair was pulled back into a loose braid, her lips full, and her eyes tired. She looked absolutely delectable. “You look good with bed mussed hair,” I flirted. Genesis grunted and shot me a look.  “Ah, that’s right. Eric called, he said to give you a call back.” I motioned toward my cell phone, she nodded then picked it up and dialed his number.  “You called,” she answered. I watched as her face grew serious. She pulled the phone away from her ear and pressed a button putting the phone on speaker.  “Is everyone there?” Eric's voice called from the phone. Cedric. I pressed into his mind. On my way. He replied simply. Cedric rounded the corner into the living room and plopped into the armchair. “We’re ready.” she confirmed.  “Great,” Eric responded. “I already spoke with the guys but I’m going to fill you in as well. You’re up against a manananggal. They’re extremely dangerous. They’re often mistaken as vampires, but the biggest difference is that they tear into the body and don’t always drain all of the blood. From the DNA samples you sent me, they are probably who you’re going to be up against. For now I’m putting this case on hold until the others get there.” Eric explained.  “Wait...I’m gonna be working with more people? Come on Eric, you know I can take them on my own.” Genesis growled into the phone. I stood, walking over to her, I placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. Slowly the tension leaves her shoulders and her tone of voice changes.  “You’ll be going against a group of them. The sample you sent me has at least three different DNA’s on it.” Eric continued. “How long do we have before the others get here?” I ask as I take the phone from her hands.  “Four days or less. I rushed their transportation, but anything could happen. For now don’t go out alone, try to blend in with the humans, and use scent masking potions. I don’t want you three getting discovered before help arrives.” Eric instructed. We all grunt in agreement before saying our goodbyes and hanging up the phone. Genesis shakes off my hand and rolls her shoulders.  “Cedric, if you try to push into my head one more time I’m going to show you your worst nightmare.” She growls turning her attention onto him. Cedric chuckles from his seat.  “Can’t help it, I’ve never seen anyone with mental barriers like you before.” Cedric gave her a toothy grin.  “Anyway,” I interrupted. “Now we know what we’re up against. Unfortunately, we have no clue who our help will be so for now let’s follow Eric's orders.” Genesis bit her lip as if she wanted to argue but thought better of it.  “Do we know anything about them?” She asked. I shook my head with a sigh.  “Unfortunately, no. I was searching the databases for an hour. They’ve barely been encountered by other agents. The main information we had mentioned they were bloodthirsty and extremely dangerous.” Cedric snorted from his seat on the couch. I turn to him and cross my arms.  “Is there something you wanted to add?”  “Nope.” He grunted. I realize now that things are going to be rough, and with the addition of two more, it may become even harder.  The next few days carried on slowly. I had barely seen Genesis unless she was eating or coming from a shower. She spent most of her time down in the cellar doing research on the manananggals. They were fearsome creatures. They were known to split the upper half of their bodies from their lower half and were often mistaken for a vampire. We had no clue if there are more than the three we have DNA on and there wasn’t much we could do at the moment.  Cedric had also found himself in the home gym working out until exhaustion, a nasty habit he had formed to combat stress. I on the other hand have been looking into our new partners. They didn’t seem half bad, although I am worried that they may make a move on my mate.  “What are you getting into?” Cedric called from the doorway.  Gazed up at him from the desk I had made home to my numerous notebooks and laptop. Sighing I take my reading glasses off and run a tired hand down my face.  “Research. You know, being productive.” I grumbled.  “I have been productive, I haven’t rung yer neck yet have I?” Cedric threatened, his accent coming out thick.  “Cedric, you’re going to need to know what we are up against. We can’t protect Genesis if we don’t know what we are doing.” I tried to reason. Cedric’s jaw ticked, he must have realized that I’m right. If they’re as dangerous as they seem we’ll need to know as much about them as possible. My heart clenched, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t worried, honestly I am more than I wanted to admit.  “Christa called.” Cedric responded. My head shot up. “She called? What for?” The last time Christa called I could barely hear past her screaming and fussing.  “She wants to move the wedding up…” Cedric's shoulders slumped as he walked further into the room and plopped down in a chair.  “Well that’s not good. She knows that we are on hold for our case, right?” Cedric nodded in confirmation.  “Then she’ll have to wait until we get home to sort this mess out. You’ve met your mate, although I'm not entirely sure how she feels about it. Genesis still needs the chance to make that decision.”  “I am aware, but will she really be able to make that choice? I just don’t want to keep dodging her out. Christa...she's important to me. Not mate important, but important nonetheless.” Cedric ran a hand through his dark hair. Christa was important to us both, she’s basically family. At the moment, I’m just confused as to why she is suddenly trying to rush things. Before she was more than willing to wait, what changed her mind?  “For now, let’s focus on the mission. We also need to figure out a way to get on better terms with Hazel. I want to make things work with her.” I stated firmly. Cedric scoffed with a roll of his eyes.  “You and me both.”
