Genesis
Tree branches crunched under my feet as I ran through the night. I dodged past trees and branches trying not to stumble and fall because I knew that if I fell it would be the end of me. A deep howl rumbled through the forest shaking me to my core and igniting the adrenaline that was already pumping through my veins. Heavy thumps came from behind me signaling for me to push my legs harder.
"Shoot," I cursed under my breath as I grabbed onto a nearby branch and swung myself up into the tree. I steadied myself and stuck my hand into my bag pulling out my scent masking potion and spraying the mixture all over me. I slowed my breathing and heart rate at will and watched in silence as the large wolf went flashing by the tree. I leaned back on the branch letting my eyes drift close. Steadying my breathing I braced myself for my next move.
Angry growls erupted around me. "I know you're up there, perra." The rogue's twisted voice grunted out. Silence fell upon us, the only sound was the autumn wind blowing the dry leaves of the trees surrounding us. "Tell me," he started. "Who has sent you? Perra like you rarely roam these forests unless there is a problem." The sounds of bones cracking filled the silence as he changed into his human form. I looked down from my hiding spot keeping a close eye on his every move. He was tall with long matted black hair that had twigs, leaves, and dirt throughout it. Dried blood coated his naked form, his eyes were blood-red, the true sign of any rouge out of control. He had scars littered across his face, his hardened features standing out, but his calm-set face sent shivers down my spine. A calm rouge was a crazed rogue, they are unpredictable and should be watched closely.
"The S.I.A has warned you multiple times, Rogue,” I bit out. “Humans are off-limits. You’ve broken this rule countless times and I have been sent to put you in your place." I let the authority take over in my voice as I let my wings rip free from my back. My skin burned as my wings released themselves, that familiar burning sensation tearing through my back, fading as quickly as it came. The pain dulled as my skin healed itself from the sudden addition of appendages. I gently descended from the tree landing in front of him, his face twisting into a sinister grin. Years ago, the Supernatural Investigations Association was created in order to control the growing number of mythological beings. Werewolves, vampires, pixies, dragons, you name it we controlled it. S.I.A is under a private government so not many know that we even exist, which makes my job easier. Elite groups of people with extraordinary abilities, like myself, are chosen to be a part of their field agents that work for S.I.A and control the supernatural and keep them out of the public eye.
Without us havoc would spread across the world, discrimination between species would arise, and new world war between the supernatural and the mortals would break loose. S.I.A works hard to keep balance in the world and to keep each species safe. The corrupt ones are the ones we look for and detain.
"Do you honestly think I care about what they say? I was exiled from my pack and left on my own to fend for myself. What do I have left to lose?" He chuckled darkly as he stared me down, his eyes tracing the outline of my wings. "I stopped caring about getting caught years ago! Humans deserve to die, they've killed the forest and are forcing us into hiding! They killed my MATE!" He bellowed his voice cracking in anger. His eyes held sadness and hurt, I could only imagine what type of wolf he was before he lost his mate. Werewolves often went crazy or killed themselves after losing their mate, but it was much harder due to their healing abilities. The only known way to kill off a wolf was wolfsbane being injected in large doses, or silver through their heart. At the very least he appeared suicidal, but I'd never know. What I do know is that he has to be stopped before anyone else is hurt.
Mates are a shifter's soulmate, their other half. Losing a mate is equivalent to losing a piece of yourself. I've heard of cases where packs have banished wolves to become rouges after losing their mates, I have not heard as much regarding other shifters. Rouges cause chaos among their pack and surrounding areas, some even going as far as to try to steal another male's mate in order to fill the void their mate left. Typically, Alphas make the decision to exile wolves who overstep their boundaries, since peace cannot be kept with an insane wolf running around causing problems. When wolves get exiled they rarely ever live for more than a month they either die from trespassing in a pack's territory or reach insanity.
"Well, well, well, who do we have here?" The rogues and my heads turned towards the voice. Tana Smith, the company problem stepped from the shadows with a smirk wide on her painted red lips. Her fiery red hair flowed behind her as she walked towards me with a grin. "I haven't seen a rogue in years. I'm surprised we hadn't been notified of you beforehand. You look like a good kill" She smirked her eyes blazing in amusement.
"Back off! This is my case." I demanded stepping up to her. Her heeled boots made her much taller than I am but that's not going to stop me. "It's been a while, Genesis, how have you been? I'm surprised you're still getting cases, they have me after all." she joked pulling out her silver gun and pointing it at the rogues head.
"My name is on this case, Back down! I am your superior and you will obey!" I ordered her, setting out a challenge she would be more than likely to take. I sensed the rogue tense up before I heard him charging towards us. Shoving Tana back I swivel around to face the rogue. I take out my silver pistol and shoot the rogue in his chest and straight through his head.
"You're no fun." Tana pouted, holstering her weapon again. "How many times do I have to tell you to stay off of my cases? It's policy— "
"Whoever's name is on the case should be the one to complete the mission and report back the outcome, I know. The only reason I show up is that you always get the good cases." She winked. I groaned and rolled my eyes, she always did this. Ever since I joined the force she's done nothing but continuously get in my way. This is how Tana is, she always wants what she can't have. Looks like the corporation is getting another complaint card for Christmas.
I turned my attention away from her and made my way over to the body. His eyes were lifeless and his skin glowed a pure gold as he and his wolf began to leave the body. Clasping my hands together I begin to say a prayer blessing his soul hoping he gets another life. Relief washed over me as his soul dispersed, knowing that he has moved on and the Moon goddess is deciding his fate. I hated having to take lives, although dispersing their souls made things slightly easier. My main plan when I receive a case is to settle things without death, but Tana ruined it this time.
"You don't have to do that you know." Tana looked at the pale body in disgust. Many investigators were like her, heartless, and had no sympathy for the mythologicals. Tana was skilled, I can say that. But her attitude towards the supernatural was disgusting, well at all except her fellow dragons. She was one of the few human Agents in the force, and every day I wonder how our colleagues put up with her.
"Mythologicals are disgusting creatures. Personally, I think we would all be better off without them." She sneered. They weren't all bad, I've known wolf packs that do their best to avoid human contact, or try to coexist with humans without having their identity discovered. Coexistence...it's a lot harder than you think.
"Even the supernatural deserve peace." I sighed, glancing at her out the corner of my eye, who rolled her eyes at me.
"Takes one to know one." She cackled as she walked away. She's right, I do know. Being a thunderbird I know what the supernatural life is like and how it made things that much harder. My mother was a thunderbird, I don't remember if my father was even a mythological at all. But I see him as a human. I've taken more from my mother's side, the only thing I received from my father was his dark ebony skin tone, which was blemish-free and smooth to the touch. My hair was just stopping at the middle of my hips but I always kept it back in a braid, it was pure white which always made me stand out with my emerald green eyes.
Pulling out the capsule assigned to this case I set it down in front of the body. The orb began to glow and lifted up from the ground. Streaks of blue light seeped from the cracks and covered the body, only to disperse and disappear back into the capsule. Sealing the capsule, I put it into my portable transporter and sent it back to my superior. I pulled out my phone and sent him a quick message.
Objective Complete.
-Agent White
Good, I'll send you the Details for your Next case.
-Eric
I closed my phone and turned on my heel heading out of the brush towards my Jeep Wrangler. I slipped inside starting up the engine and pulling away from the edge of the forest. After being on the road for a while I decided to stop at a hotel for the night. Pulling into the parking lot of the hotel I grabbed my duffle bag and jumped out of my car, and locked the doors. The hotel wasn't much, but it was more than enough for one night. Inside the building was surprisingly clean. I walked over to the front desk and checked in with the sweet old woman.
"Here you go dear, Your room in 304." She smiled.
"Thank you, ma'am" I took the key and smiled at her once more before turning around and heading to the elevator. Once to my room I threw my duffle bag on the chair and plopped down onto the bed. My bones ached from overworking myself this past week, I needed to keep busy lately. My mind and heart were always stirring when I had time to stop and think. It was coming close to the anniversary...and I needed to keep my mind off of it somehow, why not drown myself in work?
Although, something else has been bugging me lately and I can't seem to put my finger on it. I tossed and turned for a bit before groaning and grabbing my phone. I sent a quick text to my closest friend Baylee.
Genesis: Tara tried to make my case again today...
Bay: What the hell is her problem? I talked to Braxton this morning and she did the same to him. I'm so filing a complaint card!
Genesis: I'm sending one for Christmas
Bay: lol, you totally should stick it to the man Gen!
Braxton: I swear if she messes with one more of my cases I'm going to rip her head off...
I chuckled under my breath as Braxton joined our group chat.
Genesis: She damn near killed me today!
Braxton: I'm gonna go complain to Eric about it... maybe he can do something...
Bay: You can try, highly doubt he can do anything about it
Genesis: I don’t see why he can’t! She’s causing problems and they need to be fixed asap!
Braxton: Ttyl ladies, heading to bed.
I chuckled and set my phone down on the nightstand. I let my mind drift thinking about the warm breakfast I wanted tomorrow. The thought of sleep allowed my mind and body to relax, finally finding the sleep I'd been waiting patiently for.
The next morning, I woke to several emails from Eric, each containing information for a smaller case. I guess I'll be making a detour. I didn't mind, anything to keep my mind busy at this point. Stretching, I climb out of bed and move towards the bathroom only stopping to grab a pair of jeans, undergarments, and an army green t-shirt.
I strapped my dagger to the inside of my boot before gathering the rest of my belongings. My phone buzzed on the nightstand grabbing my attention.
"Agent White," I answer. "Genesis? " My best friend's voice crooned through the speaker.
"What's going on Bay?"
"Eric assigned Braxton and me a new partner." She groaned. Braxton's thick Australian accent could be heard through the line as he cursed in the background.
"Is that a bad thing?"
"Of course it is! It's been Bay and Braxton since the beginning. Now they're throwing off the dynamic." I giggled.
Agents usually worked as how they chose. Baylee and Braxton were a team since they identified each other as soulmates. I chose to work alone, it was usually easier for me that way. I didn't have to worry about watching out for someone, or disagreements. I'm lucky to have made it as far as I have without finding my mate. My avian hissed in my head, of course, she thinks something completely different.
"What's the worst that could happen? Weren't you and Braxton talking about getting a new partner soon anyways? Look at the bright side, you'll be able to get higher clearance cases." I snickered into the phone.
"I hope they assign you a partner." Bay grumbled.
"I've got a redcap case I need to handle, talk later?" Bay laughed through the phone before we said our goodbyes and hanging up the phone.
Now, to go and deal with those redcaps.
