Chapter 14 - Behind The Smile

2003 Words
The afternoon sun bathed Rome in a warm golden glow as guests slowly filtered out of the main conference hall. The opening ceremony of the European Investors' Summit had officially ended, but the event itself was far from over. The real business... Was only beginning. Executives from across Europe gathered in smaller groups, discussing investments worth billions of euros over glasses of champagne and neatly arranged hors d'oeuvres. Laughter mixed with serious negotiations. Business cards exchanged hands almost as frequently as handshakes. Sienna walked beside Kai and Zara as they entered the Networking Pavilion, a magnificent glass atrium overlooking the gardens behind the Palazzo Bellucci Convention Centre. A massive crystal chandelier hung above them, casting shimmering reflections across the polished marble floor. Even Zara, who had spent the entire morning pretending not to be impressed, finally admitted, "...Okay." Kai smirked. "What?" "I'm impressed." "You?" "Don't make fun of me." She looked around the enormous hall. "I've attended luxury events before..." "...but this..." She whistled softly. "This is another level." Kai nodded in agreement. "Bellucci International certainly knows how to host people." Sienna quietly observed the room. She wasn't looking at the decorations. She was studying the people. Every conversation. Every handshake. Every smile. Business wasn't only about numbers. It was about reading people. A skill she'd spent years mastering. "Miss De Luca." A middle-aged gentleman approached with an easy smile. "My name is Theodore Grant." "Grant Logistics." "I've wanted to meet you since your Milan presentation." Sienna accepted his handshake politely. "It's a pleasure." "I've heard wonderful things about your expansion strategy." They spoke for several minutes, discussing European supply chains and distribution costs. Kai stood nearby, occasionally contributing when the conversation shifted toward logistics. When Mr. Grant finally excused himself, another executive approached. Then another. And another. Within an hour... Sienna had spoken with representatives from nearly a dozen international companies. Kai watched the scene unfold with amusement. "You've become popular." "I represent De Luca Holdings." "They're interested in the company." Kai folded his arms. "I'm sure that's part of it." She looked at him. "What does that mean?" He smiled. "It means people are curious about the woman who managed to impress Bellucci International." Before Sienna could respond... Zara suddenly leaned between them. "Speaking of Bellucci..." She subtly nodded toward the far side of the pavilion. "There." Sienna instinctively followed her gaze. Alex stood near one of the exhibition displays, surrounded by several influential investors. Unlike many executives who tried to dominate conversations... He mostly listened. Occasionally asking questions. Occasionally smiling. Never interrupting. It was... Unexpected. "He doesn't seem arrogant." Zara muttered. Kai nodded. "I noticed that too." "Most billionaires love hearing themselves talk." "But him..." "He listens." Sienna remained silent. She'd noticed the same thing during their meetings in Milan. Even during negotiations... Alex rarely spoke more than necessary. When he did... People listened. Almost as though silence itself became more valuable around him. As if sensing someone watching... Alex looked up. Across the crowded hall... His eyes met Sienna's. Only briefly. He offered a polite nod. Nothing more. She returned the nod. Then continued speaking with another executive beside her. Alex smiled faintly before returning his attention to the conversation in front of him. Marco, standing beside him, couldn't help chuckling. "You've been looking over there quite often, sir." Alex didn't deny it. "Have I?" "You have." Marco lowered his voice. "You know..." "...if you keep staring, people will notice." Alex calmly picked up his glass of sparkling water. "Then I'll have to be more careful." Marco nearly laughed. "You've changed." Alex glanced sideways. "Is that so?" "I've worked for you for eight years." "I've never seen you attend an investors' summit..." "...and spend half your time watching someone else." Alex said nothing. Sometimes... Silence admitted more than words. ... Elsewhere in the pavilion... Adrian stood near one of the balconies overlooking the gardens. A champagne flute rested casually in his hand. His expression remained relaxed. Professional. Confident. Anyone looking at him would assume he was simply enjoying the event. They'd be wrong. His eyes followed Sienna every few moments. Watching. Calculating. His assistant quietly approached. "Sir." Adrian didn't look away. "Report." "The board members from Germany have arrived." "Good." "And..." The assistant hesitated. "The information you requested has been confirmed." Now Adrian looked at him. "What information?" "The rumors." "They're true." "The Bellucci CEO personally arranged Miss De Luca's accommodation." "He also instructed the hotel staff to prioritize her requests." A slow smile crossed Adrian's face. "So..." "Our distinguished Mr. Bellucci has favorites." The assistant frowned. "Should we do anything?" Adrian slowly swirled the champagne in his glass. "Not yet." "The best traps..." "...are the ones people walk into themselves." His gaze shifted once more toward Sienna. This time... She was laughing quietly at something Kai had said. The smile lasted only a second. But Adrian saw it. And he remembered something Lorenzo had once told him years ago. 'Perception can build a reputation faster than truth.' Maybe... He wouldn't need evidence after all. Maybe... Perception would be enough. ______ By noon, the summit's luncheon was ready to begin. An elegant ballroom overlooking the gardens had been transformed into a dining hall worthy of royalty. Round tables draped in ivory linen filled the room, each decorated with white orchids and crystal centerpieces that caught the afternoon sunlight. Soft classical music drifted through hidden speakers as guests found their assigned seats. Kai glanced at the card in his hand. "Table Seven." Zara looked at hers. "Same." She smiled. "Looks like we're together." Sienna unfolded her own seating card. She paused. Kai noticed. "What?" Without a word, she turned the card toward him. His eyebrows rose. "Oh..." Alex Bellucci. Assigned to the same table. Zara grinned mischievously. "Someone upstairs definitely has a sense of humor." Sienna sighed softly. "It's just a seating arrangement." Kai smiled. "Of course." "But it'll make lunch much more interesting." ... The guests gradually settled into their seats. Alex arrived a few moments later. Several executives greeted him as he walked through the room. He acknowledged each one politely before reaching Table Seven. His eyes immediately found Sienna. "Miss De Luca." "Mr. Bellucci." He pulled out the chair opposite hers. "I hope you don't mind." "It isn't my event." "Fair point." Kai sat beside Sienna while Zara took the seat beside Alex. Within minutes, the remaining guests joined them—an elderly British investor, a French banking executive, and the CEO of a luxury automobile company. Lunch began. At first, the conversations remained entirely professional. Markets. Trade policies. Currency fluctuations. Investment risks. Sienna contributed only when necessary. She preferred listening. The elderly investor, Sir Edward Collins, eventually smiled at her. "I've heard quite a lot about you." "I'm afraid I can't control rumors." He laughed heartily. "Not rumors." "Achievements." "They say you're one of the youngest executive directors in Italy." "I've been fortunate." Alex quietly observed her. Even compliments made her uncomfortable. Interesting. Sir Edward leaned back. "So tell me, Miss De Luca..." "What motivated someone your age to devote her life to business?" The table grew quiet. Sienna gently placed her fork down. "My father." She answered honestly. "He built something valuable." "I simply intend to make sure it becomes even stronger." There was no arrogance. No dramatic speech. Just quiet certainty. Sir Edward nodded approvingly. "An admirable answer." Alex found himself smiling. She truly loved what she did. Not the money. Not the prestige. The work itself. It was refreshing. ... As dessert was served, the conversations became lighter. The French executive chuckled. "Mr. Bellucci." "Is it true you've rejected every marriage proposal your grandmother arranged?" The table erupted into laughter. Alex sighed dramatically. "My grandmother believes every successful businessman should marry before forty." "And?" "I believe she should stop introducing me to strangers." Even Sienna smiled slightly. Sir Edward looked toward her. "And you, Miss De Luca?" "When do you intend to marry?" Kai nearly inhaled his drink. Sienna remained calm. "I haven't considered it." "No special someone?" "No." "Surely there must be someone chasing you." She thought for a moment. "...Unfortunately." The table laughed. Sir Edward looked amused. "And what do you usually do?" "I reject them." Alex lowered his gaze, hiding a smile. That... He believed. ... After lunch concluded, guests slowly returned to the networking sessions. Sienna quietly slipped outside onto one of the palace terraces. The afternoon breeze carried the scent of blooming roses from the gardens below. For the first time all day... Silence. She rested her hands lightly against the stone railing. Rome stretched beautifully before her. "You disappear often." His voice came from behind her. She didn't need to turn. "I prefer quiet." Alex stepped beside her. "So do I." For a few moments... Neither spoke. The silence between them never felt forced. It simply... Existed. Finally, Alex broke it. "I've been wondering something." "What?" "The morning after Milan." She blinked. "What about it?" "You left before I woke up." "I had work." "I figured." He smiled. "But that's not what I meant." Realization slowly dawned on her. "...The money." "The money." She closed her eyes briefly. "I was hoping you'd forgotten." "I'm afraid not." "I genuinely thought..." She hesitated. "...you worked there." Alex looked at her in disbelief before laughing. Not politely. Not quietly. He actually laughed. The sound surprised even himself. "You believed I was..." "...a gigolo." She looked away. "When you say it out loud..." "It sounds much worse." "It really does." She sighed. "I was drunk." "You were." "I wasn't thinking clearly." "I noticed." She rubbed her forehead. "I left money." "You did." "I also left a note." "You did." "Please tell me you threw it away." Alex reached into the inside pocket of his suit. To Sienna's horror... He produced a neatly folded piece of paper. "I kept it." Her eyes widened. "You actually kept it?" "I rarely receive tips." She covered her face with one hand. "I can't believe this." Alex unfolded the note. "'Thank you for last night. Here's a little tip.'" He looked at her. "It's surprisingly polite." She groaned softly. "I should've disappeared forever." "I would've looked for you." She froze. The words had left his mouth naturally. Without hesitation. For a brief second... Neither of them spoke. Alex cleared his throat. "What I mean is..." "...I would've wanted to know who left." Sienna looked at him. His expression had softened. Gone was the confident CEO standing before hundreds of investors. In his place... Was simply a man. Honest. She didn't know what to say. Fortunately... Marco appeared. "Sir." Alex turned. "The French delegation is waiting." "I'll be there." Marco nodded respectfully before leaving. Alex looked back at Sienna. "I suppose duty wins again." "It usually does." He smiled. "One more thing." She raised an eyebrow. "I still intend to take you to dinner." "You've asked several times." "I know." "My answer hasn't changed." "I know that too." "So why keep asking?" Alex slipped both hands into his pockets. "Because one day..." "...you'll say yes." She shook her head, amused despite herself. "You're unbelievably persistent." "So I've been told." He inclined his head politely. "Until next time, Miss De Luca." She watched him walk back inside. Without realizing it... A tiny smile appeared on her face. Hidden behind one of the marble pillars... A camera shutter clicked. Once. Twice. Three times. Adrian lowered the camera. On the screen... Alex smiling at Sienna. Sienna smiling back. Standing alone together. Close enough to fuel gossip. Not close enough to prove innocence. His lips slowly curled into a satisfied smile. "Interesting..." He slipped the camera back into his jacket. "Let's see how the Board reacts when they believe the Chairman's daughter is becoming distracted." He walked away unnoticed. Far above the ballroom, storm clouds began gathering over Rome. Neither Sienna nor Alex saw them. Neither realized... The summit that had begun with opportunity... Was about to end with a scandal that would follow them all the way back to Italy.
