Chapter 15 - The Perfect Trap

1589 Words
Rome was beautiful after sunset. Golden lights reflected across the Tiber River as laughter spilled from cafés lining the narrow streets. Tourists wandered through the plazas, musicians filled the air with soft melodies, and the city seemed to breathe with life. Inside the Grand Imperiale Hotel... The atmosphere was very different. Sienna sat alone in her suite, her laptop balanced on the coffee table while several project files lay scattered around her. The Investors' Summit had ended for the day. Tomorrow would be filled with private negotiations before everyone returned home. Yet... Instead of resting, she was reviewing the revised France Expansion proposal. A knock sounded at her door. "Come in." Kai entered carrying a paper bag and two cups. "I figured you'd skip dinner." "I wasn't planning to." Kai looked at the untouched fruit basket on the counter. "You've been saying that for three hours." Sienna looked at the clock. It was already past eight. She sighed. "...I lost track of time." "I know." He placed the bag on the table. "I bought pasta." "You'll thank me later." She closed her laptop. "Thank you." Kai smiled. "You're saying thank you more often these days." She raised an eyebrow. "Is that a complaint?" "No." "It's... nice." For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. Kai quietly watched her eat. She wasn't someone who enjoyed being looked after. Yet somehow... She never refused when it came from the people she trusted. That thought made him smile. Unfortunately... It also reminded him that someone else had begun earning that trust. ... Meanwhile... On the executive floor of the same hotel... Adrian stood inside his suite, staring at the photographs spread across the desk. Every single one showed Alex and Sienna. Talking. Laughing. Standing alone on the terrace. None of them proved anything inappropriate. But together... They created a story. His phone rang. "Speak." His assistant's voice came through. "The chairman's flight has been confirmed." "He'll return to Italy tomorrow evening." "Good." "And the photographs?" "They've already been prepared." Adrian slowly gathered them into a neat folder. "Don't send them yet." "We'll wait." "For what, sir?" "The perfect moment." He ended the call. Walking to the window, he looked down at the city lights below. "You've always been Father's favorite." He whispered to himself. "The brilliant daughter." "The perfect executive." "The future of De Luca Holdings." His expression darkened. "But even perfect people..." "...can be ruined." ... The following morning... The summit entered its final day. Unlike the excitement of the opening ceremony, today focused on private meetings between selected companies. Sienna, Kai and Zara arrived early. The conference rooms buzzed with activity. Assistants hurried through the hallways carrying documents. Interpreters prepared translation equipment. Outside Meeting Room Four... Kai adjusted his tie. "Our presentation starts in twenty minutes." Zara glanced around. "I still can't believe we're actually here." "You deserve to be." Sienna replied. Before Zara could answer... A familiar voice interrupted. "Good morning." Alex approached with Marco beside him. He looked as composed as ever. "Miss De Luca." "Mr. Bellucci." "I trust you slept well." "I did." Kai looked between them. Something had changed. They still spoke formally. Still kept their distance. Yet... The awkwardness that existed in Milan had almost disappeared. Alex handed Sienna a small folder. "This contains the revised investment schedule we discussed yesterday." She accepted it. "Thank you." "You'll find pages twelve through sixteen particularly useful." She opened it briefly. He was right. Several market analyses had been added. Data her own team hadn't yet collected. "This is valuable." "I thought it might help." Kai frowned slightly. "You're sharing this with us?" Alex nodded. "The summit is about building partnerships." "Not every opportunity needs to become a competition." Sienna looked up. "I appreciate it." For just a second... Their eyes met. Then Marco cleared his throat. "Sir." "The German delegation has arrived." Alex nodded. "I'll be there." Before leaving, he looked back at Sienna. "I hope your presentation goes well." "You too." He smiled. Then walked away. Kai watched him disappear down the hallway. Finally... He spoke. "...He's surprisingly decent." Sienna didn't answer immediately. Instead... She looked down at the folder in her hands. Then quietly said, "...He is." Kai heard her. And although he smiled... Something inside his chest tightened. For the first time... He realized he wasn't afraid of losing to another man. He was afraid... Because Sienna herself was slowly beginning to notice Alex. And once she did... There might be no going back. ______ The presentation room overlooked the city of Rome through floor-to-ceiling windows. Sunlight streamed across the polished conference table where representatives from six multinational companies were already seated. Kai connected his laptop to the projector. Zara arranged printed reports before each guest. Sienna stood quietly at the front of the room, reviewing the opening slide one final time. She wasn't nervous. She never was. "Ready?" Kai asked. She nodded once. "Let's begin." ... For the next ninety minutes... Sienna commanded the room. She spoke with confidence, explaining De Luca Holdings' strategy for expanding into the French market. There were no exaggerated promises. No flashy marketing tricks. Only facts. Numbers. Research. Every question thrown at her was answered calmly. Every concern was met with a practical solution. By the time the presentation ended... The room erupted into applause. An elderly Swiss investor stood first. "Miss De Luca..." "In thirty years of business, I've attended hundreds of presentations." He smiled warmly. "Very few have impressed me." "Yours did." "Thank you." Another executive spoke up. "I believe De Luca Holdings has an incredibly bright future." Kai couldn't stop smiling. Zara looked like a proud older sister. As everyone exchanged business cards... Kai leaned toward Sienna. "You were incredible." "I simply presented the facts." "You made the facts sound exciting." She raised an eyebrow. "I'll take that as a compliment." "You should." ... Outside the conference room... Alex had just concluded his own meeting. Marco approached. "Sir." "The De Luca presentation has just ended." "And?" "The response was overwhelmingly positive." Alex smiled. "I expected nothing less." Marco hesitated. "You seem unusually confident in Miss De Luca." Alex adjusted the cuff of his suit. "Confidence has nothing to do with it." "It's observation." Marco chuckled. "You admire her." Alex looked at him. "I respect competence." "And?" "...And I admire competence." Marco laughed quietly. "That's the closest thing to a confession I've heard from you." Alex simply walked away. ... Later that afternoon... The summit officially came to an end. Guests slowly began checking out of the hotel. Luxury cars lined the entrance. Luggage was loaded. Goodbyes were exchanged. Inside the lobby... Kai was settling their bill when Zara suddenly frowned. "That's strange." "What is?" She pointed toward several people gathered near the reception desk. "They're looking at us." Kai turned. Sure enough... A few executives whispered among themselves. One woman glanced at Sienna before quickly looking away. Another discreetly checked her phone. Sienna noticed. Something had changed. Within minutes... More whispers spread across the lobby. "What are they saying?" Zara asked. Kai approached one of the younger executives he knew. "Everything alright?" The man looked uncomfortable. "You... haven't seen it?" "Seen what?" He hesitated before handing Kai his phone. His smile disappeared instantly. A business news website filled the screen. The headline read: **CHAIRMAN'S HEIRESS GROWS CLOSE TO RIVAL BILLIONAIRE DURING ROME SUMMIT** Beneath it... Several photographs. Alex and Sienna talking on the terrace. Alex smiling. Sienna smiling back. Another photo showed them standing alone after lunch. The article itself never accused them of anything directly. Instead... It asked questions. *Was De Luca Holdings becoming too close to Bellucci International?* *Could personal relationships influence future business decisions?* *Was the France project still being judged fairly?* Kai's jaw tightened. "This is ridiculous." Zara grabbed the phone. "What?!" She looked at Sienna. "They're twisting everything!" Sienna calmly read the article herself. Then handed the phone back. "I expected something like this." Kai stared. "You did?" "The photographs weren't taken by accident." "They were planned." Before Kai could respond... Her own phone rang. The screen displayed one name. **Father.** She answered immediately. "Good afternoon." Lorenzo's voice was calm. Too calm. "I've read the article." "I assumed you had." "Return to Italy." His tone remained professional. "We'll discuss this at the office." The call ended. Kai sighed. "This isn't going to be pleasant." "No." "It isn't." ... Across the lobby... Alex also received the article. Marco looked furious. "This is obvious manipulation." Alex silently read every line. Every photograph. Every headline. Then he looked up. "Who released it?" "We're tracing the source." Alex's expression hardened. "I don't care who published it." "I want to know..." "...who took the photographs." Marco nodded. "I'll have an answer." "You have twenty-four hours." Marco had worked with Alex long enough to recognize that voice. Someone had crossed a line. ... As the De Luca team prepared to leave... Sienna turned for one last look at the hotel. Her eyes met Alex's across the crowded lobby. Neither smiled. Neither waved. They simply looked at one another. There was no need for words. Both of them understood. The summit had ended. The real battle... Was waiting back in Italy. High above the lobby, on the second-floor balcony... Adrian watched everything unfold. A satisfied smile spread across his face. "They're exactly where I want them." He slipped his phone into his pocket. "The first move..." "...was successful." Far below him... None of them noticed. Not Sienna. Not Kai. Not Alex. The game had only just begun.
