Chapter 4
Nova
I was terrified when that man tried to r**e me, but the moment I caught my mate’s scent I knew he was coming to help. Something about him still felt off though. His eyes always carried fear, and that didn’t make sense. He was an alpha. Most alphas didn’t show fear like that. From what I had seen, my mate was heartless and ruthless when he needed to be. The way he killed that man, the way his face and eyes changed—it said everything. It was his wolf that took over and snapped the general’s neck. He reminded me so much of Weston. Weston’s eyes used to change the exact same way. They turned red. Red eyes belonged to the most dangerous alphas in the world, and they were rare. I was scared, but my wolf was thrilled to have a red-eyed mate. She knew how powerful we could become together. I really wanted to see his wolf, to know what color he was. Weston’s wolf was dark brown, and with those red eyes he looked perfect.
My wolf used to love spending time with Weston’s wolf, but my mate’s aura was even darker and more dangerous than my brother’s. I had no idea what kind of life he had lived because I still couldn’t read his eyes. He was the first person I had ever failed to read. I couldn’t feel his thoughts or emotions clearly, but I already liked him a lot. He treated me so gently, cooked for me, and held me while I fell asleep. That was everything I had ever wanted from a mate. I felt lucky to have him. The hurtful words he said earlier didn’t count. He was just scared of something, and whatever it was bothered him deeply.
While we lay in bed he pulled me closer and held me tight. I buried my face against his strong chest and breathed him in, wanting more of his scent. I kissed his chest and felt him chuckle. He was half-asleep, but he still kept me close, kissing the top of my head until I drifted off. I had no idea what time I finally fell asleep.
The next morning I woke up and immediately looked for Alex. He wasn’t beside me. Fear hit me hard. Had he left me here? He wouldn’t just leave me… would he? I didn’t even know where this place was.
‘Mate has work. He’s an alpha. He’s busy. Don’t act like a baby, Nova,’ my wolf giggled.
‘Okay,’ I answered, but I couldn’t stop smiling when I remembered how tightly I had held him.
‘Mate wanted to mark you while you were sleeping. Our scent drives him crazy.’
Really? He wanted to mark me? My cheeks heated up at the thought.
‘But he controlled himself,’ my wolf added, sounding disappointed. She had been restless ever since she saw him yesterday. She wanted him to mark her. She wanted more. If I was honest, I wanted it too. I wanted to feel his body against mine. It felt good for both of us. I knew Alex felt the same way. Male werewolves had a hard time controlling themselves around their mates.
I pushed those thoughts away and got out of bed to head to the bathroom. Before I could take more than a step, the door opened. Alex walked in. His eyes moved slowly over my body, full of heat. Only then did I realize how exposed I was. I was still wearing one of his shirts, and the top two buttons were open. My shoulders, collarbones, and half of my right breast were showing. I bit my lip in embarrassment and hurried to button it up, but Alex was already right in front of me. His eyes were dark with desire.
“Alex… I—”
He didn’t let me finish. He pressed his lips against mine and pushed me back against the wall. It was my first kiss. My wolf tried to take over, but I held her back. I knew what would happen if she got free. Alex pressed his body against mine.
‘Give him everything, Nova. Mate wants us,’ my wolf howled happily. This was what she had been waiting for.
Alex bit my bottom lip.
“Ahh…”
A soft moan slipped out as his tongue slid into my mouth. He kissed me deep and slow, like nothing else existed. The only sounds were our heartbeats and the wet noise of the kiss. Then he lifted me up. I wrapped my legs around his waist and ran my fingers through his soft hair. He carried me to the bed and laid me down gently before climbing over me. My heart was racing. Was this really happening? Were we about to…? I hugged him tighter. I could feel how wet I was, and I could feel how hard he was against my stomach.
“Nova…” he whispered as he broke the kiss.
I smiled. He had already given me a nickname. His hand slowly trailed up my thigh. I looked into his eyes and watched the green turn red. His wolf had taken over. Before I could react, my own wolf surged forward and took control of me. At the same time that strange feeling came back—like something else was waking up inside me. Something I didn’t recognize. I forced the thought away.
The second my wolf took over, Alex’s wolf growled and kissed us hard. His mouth moved to our neck. He licked the marking spot. I knew what he was about to do. I held onto his shoulders tightly and buried my face against his neck. He kissed my skin, then placed his teeth gently against the spot, ready to bite—
The door slammed open with a loud growl.
I shoved Alex away and looked up. Asher stood there, furious, with Kelvin right behind him. Asher stormed over and punched Alex hard across the face.
“HOW DARE YOU TOUCH THE PRINCESS, YOU BASTARD?”
Asher’s arrogant wolf was fully in control as he grabbed Alex by the collar. No. This couldn’t happen. I looked at Alex and saw he was seconds away from attacking back. I didn’t want them to fight.
“Stop it, Asher! Let him go!”
I tried to pull Asher away, but I wasn’t strong enough. He was only fifteen, but his wolf’s strength was no joke. Only Weston had ever been able to control him when he got like this.
“Get away, Nova. He was touching you. He was about to mark you. I’ll make him pay for putting his hands on something that isn’t his.”
He punched Alex again. Alex let out a deep, angry growl. His face was pure fury. I knew what would happen if two alpha bloods started fighting. I grabbed Alex’s arm and held on.
“Alex, don’t…”
He didn’t even look at me. His eyes were locked on Asher with pure murder in them. Suddenly Alex shoved Asher toward the wall. Before Asher could hit it, he shifted into his wolf. At the same time Alex growled, and I knew that sound—it was the start of a real fight between two alphas.
“STOP IT BEFORE I KILL BOTH OF YOU!”
My wolf’s power poured into my voice. Both of them froze and looked at me. Asher already knew I could control wolves because I was a golden wolf. Alex’s face, though, was pure shock—the same shock I saw on Kelvin’s face.
“Please stop,” I said more gently.
Asher’s wolf walked over and licked my face. I patted his head and kissed him between the eyes. Then I heard Alex’s low, angry growl. I sighed, grabbed the bedsheet, and draped it over Asher.
“Shift back.”
He listened and shifted. The second he was human again he shot Alex a deadly look.
“Asher… he’s my mate. We met yesterday,” I said with a tired sigh.
Asher stared at me for a second, then looked at Alex and gave a short nod.
“Did you two have s*x yesterday?”
What kind of question was that? Was he serious? That was the first thing he asked after finding out I met my mate? I was embarrassed and annoyed at the same time.
“ASHER!”
He just smirked.
“Okay, sorry.”
I glanced at Alex. He was already looking at me with a devilish little smile. I quickly looked away.
“You should
treat me well from now on… brother-in-law,” Asher said, winking at Alex.
Alex chuckled.
