Chapter 3

“So, who do you think is responsible?” I asked Alice. She was about to answer my question, but was interrupted when Mr. Thomas called her name.

“Miss. Merrick. I will have to ask you to sit properly in my class now. I am about to begin now.” Mr. Thomas said and asked Alice to sit properly. Alice turned around and sat properly on her seat, facing Mr. Thomas. Soon, the bell rang off and everybody was inside the class, after which Mr. Thomas began the class.

“OK students, welcome back to school and to your new and final year at school. Hope you all will be able to complete this final year of your school life without any difficulty.” Mr. Thomas says to us and welcomes us to the class with a bright smile. Everyone seemed happy with Mr. Thomas’s speech. Well, it is unusual for Mr. Thomas to smile and welcome students. He is the most strict teacher. I call him Captain Holt from ‘Brooklyn 99’. He is just like Captain Holt.

Hearing Mr. Thomas’s speech, I kind of thought he was not going to take the class today, but I was proved wrong when he continued to speak. Hearing his next words, I could hear some students groan softly.

“And now, back to today's tasks. I remember I had given you guys some maths homework to do on your holiday. So, take them out, bring them here and I will check them now,” Mr. Thomas said and sat at his desk, waiting for us to show him the homework which we had done. I bent down to take the book, in which I had done the homework, out. But Alice pulled the bag away from me.

“Hey!! What are you doing?” I whispered, yelled at her.

“Trust me. I am doing you a favour!! You don’t want to be the only person in the room who does math homework on a summer vacation. So, just sit down.” Alice says to me as she holds my bag. Yeah, she is right. Everyone was just seated in their seats and it was obvious that none of them had done the homework. Thank god Alice stopped me, else I would have looked like a huge i***t!!

Seeing that no one was getting up, Mr. Thomas sighed and stood up.

“Well, looks like nobody has done the homework. But that is okay. As for today's homework, everybody will go home and do the work. Tomorrow the first thing I will do is check it. If any one of you fails to do the work, they will have two weeks' detention after school. Now let us start with our first class of the year,” Mr. Thomas says and then starts the class. Everybody seemed annoyed by the punishment, but nobody dared to speak. Mr. Thomas then continued to do his lesson and I noted down everything I understood. When there were 10 minutes for the bell, Mr. Thomas stopped his class.

“Okay students, so this is for today. Don’t forget to do your homework, else just be ready for a two week detention. So, if you have any questions you can ask them now,” Mr. Thomas said to us, and as soon as he said that we could ask questions, many students raised their hands. Mr. Thomas allowed the students to ask questions and answered them. The last one to ask the question was Lisa.

“Mr. Thomas, we heard that we will have two new classmates this year. When are they joining us?” Lisa asked Mr. Thomas. Mr. Thomas sighed before answering. He kind of looked pissed and worried at the same time.

“Well, Miss. Lawrance, you are right about getting two new classmates and they will be joining us tomorrow,” Mr. Thomas answered Lisa’s question. As soon as he answered, Rachel, who was sitting next to Lisa, raised her hand.

“Who are they, Mr. Thomas? Can we know one or two things about them, like their names?” Rachel asked Mr. Thomas. He looked annoyed right now.

“Well, you can wait until tomorrow to get the answers to your questions, Miss. Smith.” Mr. Thomas answered Rachel’s question, without actually giving her any answers. After he answered Rachel’s question, the bell rang.

“Okay students, I will meet you tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the day and behave,” Mr Thomas said and got out of the class room. As soon as Mr. Thomas left the class, Alice turned around with her eyes wide.

“Did you see Mr. Thomas’s face when Lisa asked about the new students!!” Alice said to me with a worried look on her face.

“Yea, I saw that look he gave. But why are you panicking about that?” I said and asked Alice, who just shook her head at me in response, before answering.

“Well, his expression loudly said that the two students are bad news. I am sure he knows something about them. And seeing his expression, I am sure that the two new students are also meanies!!” Alice says in the most dramatic way. I just rolled my eyes at her response.

“You are just overreacting. I am sure that those two students will be fine. So, just relax.” I said to Alice and soon the next class began, and nothing special happened.

*At the lunch time*

“Okay students. It is lunch time now. I will start the first chapter tomorrow, so everyone is going to get their text books. Also, Miss. Merrick, can you stay back for a few minutes please,” Mrs. Rosemary Rees, our English teacher, said to us and asked Alice to stay behind. Alice groaned before standing back. She does not like Mrs. Rees much, mainly because Mrs. Rees is Alice’s mom, Mrs. Merrick’s sister.

“You wait for me at the cafeteria, I will be right behind you,” Alice says to me and then goes towards Mrs. Rees.

“Okay!! I will keep a seat for you!!” I said to Alice and walked out of the class and then walked towards the cafeteria. After I reached the cafeteria, I sat down at a vacant table, and just waited for Alice.

As I sat at the table, waiting for Alice, I heard someone call my name from a table behind me. I turned around to see that it was Rachel who was calling me. She waved her hands at me and called me towards her table. I got up and went towards Rachel’s table.

Some things you should know about Rachel. I have known Rachel since 7th grade, and one more thing, Rachel is also my neighbour. She moved here when we were in 7th grade. She is also in the cheerleading squad and is a part of the popular kids' at school. Rachel is a good friend. Even though we do not hang out often, we kind of have a good understanding.

Well, even if it is just me mostly doing her homework or assignments.
