The drive back to the mansion was suffocating. Matteo was silent, and Damien was sitting next to me, his eyes glued to his phone. No one spoke, not even after what had happened at the gala.
I couldn't help but look at the red mark from my hand on his cheek, he hadn't shouted, he didn't threaten me, he hadn't even looked angry.
And that had a more disturbing effect on me than if he had. When I couldn't handle the silence again, I decided to say something, “Why didn't you hit me back?”
He didn't turn his head to look at me, “Would that have made you feel better?”
I frowned, "I slapped you."
"I noticed."
“You could have had your guards drag me away.”
"I could have."
"You could have beaten me.”
"I could have."
My frustration grew, "Then why didn't you?"
It was only after I asked this question that he looked at me, “Due to your anger.” That was all he said.
I laughed bitterly, "That's your explanation?"
"No."
"Then what is?"
His eyes never blinked, “You wanted me to feel your feelings.”
I was taken aback by his words, then I turned my gaze away from him, "You deserved it."
“So you keep saying.”
"You humiliated me."
"No."
I spun toward him, "No?"
"My sister did."
"And you let her." I cried out loud and he didn't deny it, he didn't defend himself. He only kept his eyes forward.
“You thought I'd stop her?” He asked after.
“I thought you'd do something.”
The silence returned.
When the car drove through the mansion gates, my anger had become much heavier. It was now disappointment.
As soon as we entered, Damien spoke without looking at me, “Meet me in my office now.”
"I'd rather not." I told him honestly.
"That wasn't a request."
I folded my arms, "I'm tired."
"So am I."
He continued walking and I had no choice but to follow him, I was still scared of what he might do to me. His office was the same as the day I had mistakenly entered, it was organized and cold.
He went behind his desk and took out a thin file, “My men finished their investigation.”
I frowned, "What investigation?"
"You."
A knot formed in my stomach, "You had no right to do that."
“I don't need to ask for permission.” He said and opened the file, “Sophia Bennett, you're 23 and you work two jobs.”
I remained silent.
“You pay most of your father's medical expenses.”
My chest became tight.
“You've been supporting your family since you were nineteen.”
"Stop."
“Your mother has taken out loans in your name more than once.”
"I said stop." I said more strongly but he just went on as if he hadn't heard me.
“Your younger sister has never worked more than three months at a time.”
My hands began to shake, "That's enough."
“You paid your ex-boyfriend's college tuition, even his rent.”
The room blurred.
“He left you for another woman.”
"Enough!" My voice cracked.
Damien carefully shut the file, "I was wrong."
I looked at him with blazing eyes, "About what?"
“You said that no one picked you, I thought you were exaggerating but it appears, you weren't.”
Those final words broke me and tears start rolling down my cheeks, "You don't know anything about my family."
“I know they haven't reported you missing.”
My heart stopped, "What...?"
"They haven't gone to the police."
"No..."
“There has been no contact with anyone.”
"You're lying."
“They're only asking neighbors if you’ve run away again.”
I shook my head up and down, "No."
"They're more concerned about paying next month's bills than finding you."
"No!"
I moved toward him, my eyes filled with tears, "Take it back."
"I can't."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
"No..." I couldn't help but say, I think there was a part of me that broke right in that moment.
I moved in closer to him until we were only a foot away. I grumbled through my teeth, "You don't know my family, you have no idea of what my life is like."
He never showed any emotion, "I know enough." That was all he said.
“You think because you paid someone to dig into my life, you know me?”
I yelled and he moved for the first time since we'd been in his office. He took slow steps towards me and I instinctively stepped back as well.
He kept coming until my backside hit the edge of his desk. I could not move any more and he was now directly in front of me. I could feel the heat from his body, he was standing very close to me.
My pulse quickened, "What are you doing?" I asked, but my voice came out as a whisper.
He didn't answer.
Instead, his eyes were trained on me, searching, studying, as if he was reading my mind.
"You don't want people to see you." He whispered.
"I hate you."
"I know."
His voice was so calm, it made everything worse. I swallowed as he lifted one hand and slowly pushed hair away from my face.
The touch lasted for a split second but it seemed like forever. His gaze then dropped from my eyes, to my lips.
My heart pounded in my ribcage...No... There was no way...
He leaned in, slowly and deliberately. He was so close, I could feel the heat of his breathe on my skin.
My mind was blank, I couldn't breathe, I couldn't think, I couldn't even remember why I was angry.
His face was just inches away from mine, one more move and our lips would make contact but before that happened, the mansion alarms suddenly began to ring.
Red emergency lights started flashing through the office windows, a guard from outside shouted, "Boss! Perimeter breach!"
Another voice yelled, "Romano men!"
Before I could lift a finger, there was gunfire from outside, shots of automatic rifles, the windows in the office exploded and glass rained across the office.
Damien reacted instantly, the situation felt so natural to him, like he had been in this situation countless times.
He grabbed my waist and threw me behind his massive desk as bullets tear through the room.
One of his hands shielded my head while his other hand drew a pistol from beneath his jacket.
His hard expression remained unchanged, even as he looked at me and said, "Stay down if you want to live."
Before I could react, he stood up and walked straight into the gunfire. I watched in complete disbelief as the calm billionaire transformed into the ruthless mafia king everyone whispered about.
The office door flew open and Damien fired three precise shots, then three bodies hit the floor, one after another.
His guards flooded the hallway and gunshots continued to echo throughout the mansion.
I stayed curled up behind the desk where Damien had left me, trembling as screams, bullets, and breaking glass filled the mansion.
After a few more minutes of rapid gunfire, there was silence, and I thought it was finally over.
As I made a move to stand up, a masked gunman crashed through the office window and pointed his gun straight at me.
Our eyes meet and he did the last thing I would ever expect anyone to do, he smiled and said, "Found her."
