Departing to the capital

1307 Words
The villagers and the halflings saw the moment when Clyde cut down the neck of the Ogre. They loudly cheered and immediately runs towards Clyde once again. “Thank you for saving us, Clyde. No, I should call you hero now. Thank you for saving us, hero!” Clyde is a bit embarrassed suddenly to be called as a hero. However, his hero trait has started to appear. He calmly regained his calm from earlier flustered state and assess the situation. “How’s the situation in the village?” One of the survivors then replied to him: “Most of the houses in the village have been destroyed and since we’re the only people left; I believe we will be the one accompanying you to have an audience with the king. After all, there’s nothing we can do here in the village. Most of the guards and sentries are dead and we will die if the monster comes back to attack. It will be safer if we travel with you.” 10 villagers and 20 halflings including Lance then clean up the area. They gathered what they could bring with them and prepared to leave. As for the corpse of the monster, they took some of the valuable materials like the horn of the horned rabbit and the skin of the wild boar. At least, they could sell them to get some money for starting out their lives in a new place. Lance didn’t bother to gather the materials but Milla is doing it excitedly. After all, it might be a small sum and worthless for Lance who used to live in riches but it is already a fortune for her. Not to mention that Lance now has no money, Milla is trying her best to gather the material. She could easily deduct that Lance is powerful but he has poor common knowledge. If not, he would be busily gathering materials like her. Lance on the other hand is doing something else. He looked in the direction where the monsters are coming. It was to the northwest, where the Darkwood mountain range is located. It is also in the direction where the hero’s sword is located. Previously, Clyde and Milla’s mother headed towards the northwest of the village to take the hero’s sword. It was said that Clyde has a dream and, in that dream, he met with a goddess that is telling him that the world is going to face a crisis soon and he needs to pull the hero’s sword and become the savior of the world. Strangely enough, the now-dead village’s head believes in it and that is why Clyde went with Milla’s mother and a couple of villagers to pull the hero’s sword. As for why the hero’s sword is in such a remote area, it is because everyone lost interest in it. The legend said that the previous hero, war god Ryker, fought with the legendary dragon Gavnith and both perished together. The only witness of such a world-shaking event is the holy sword Caliburn that is stuck on a big rock on the foot of Darkwood mountain range. Many people at first come to the area to take the holy sword for themselves and become the new hero but nobody succeeds. Countless people come to challenge themselves but no one succeeds and as time passed by, everyone lost interest in it and acts as if the sword is never there. “Could it have something to do with the holy sword?” Lance is now trying hard to remember where was he in his previous life right now. Since he is reincarnated into a new body, what happened to the ‘Lance’ from his previous life? Does the previous him still existing or history has been changed too? He needs to find out. However, it is impossible for him to visit the demon’s territory at this time with this kind of body. He will need to slowly figure out things. In Lance’s previous life, when Clyde first pulled out the sword, that is the moment that he is officially being crowned as the demon king. Lance’s age when he died is at 600 years old. It means that right now if Lance still exists, he would be 594 years old. This is also the moment that he takes the helm of the demon king’s throne. The moment Clyde pulled the holy sword, is the moment Lance is being crowned as the demon king. He doesn’t understand why but maybe that is the rule set by the gods. Whenever a new demon king rises, there will be a hero to oppose him or it could be the other way around. Whenever a new hero shows up, a new demon king rises up to power. Otherwise, it is still a mystery as to why there has been no new demon king for almost one thousand years. Lance however doesn’t want to dwell too much on it. After all, if he met with the ‘Lance’ from his previous life, he is still too weak to do anything and quite possibly get killed since he knows Lance’s way of thinking since he is Lance himself. Right now, he has other things to think of. How would he enter Lance’s group? As most of the villagers and halflings are there to escort Clyde only, how he should make his appeal to Clyde? Lance then looked at Milla and suddenly an idea pops out inside his head. “How about I help Milla to awake her ability? I believe she would be very powerful and even Clyde couldn’t help but want to take Milla. Not to mention their ability is of the same fire element.” Suddenly Lance remembers one of Clyde’s earliest techniques that he reads on the report. Lance's eyes are looking at Milla and Clyde alternately and then he nodded. “Alright, it will be that plan then.” Lance makes his decision as he approaches Milla and the rest of the villagers. “Everyone is ready? Let’s depart now.” After some time, Lance, Clyde, Milla, and the rest of the survivors departed from the village. Most of the halflings decided to only accompany them into a neighboring village. After all, even if they followed Clyde until he meets with the king, they would not get any benefit. They also know very well how badly halflings are treated by the people in big cities, especially nobles. There will be no point for them to follow Clyde and it is more reasonable for them to stay in the village. As for the human villagers, they might follow Clyde to the city to see whether the king will give them a reward or not. Even if the king didn’t give them a reward, they will need to go to the city to sell the monster’s materials. The entourage soon starts their journey. Lance however did something before they are leaving the village, he is dropping a drop of blood on the ground without anyone noticing, and a faint smell that entices the monster can be smelled. Lance is being careful and he wanted the monster to come and destroy the village. So even if anyone comes to investigate, the proof is long gone. As for the body of the villager that is being buried en masse, nobody knows but when the ground has been covered by soil, their body quickly dried up as if the blood in their body has been gone.
