“Time to wake up!”
Ben woke, terrified and covered with sweat, but it was only Maya sitting on the edge of the bed, shaking him gently. She looked scared.
“Get up! Something’s happened outside.”
When Ben sat up, the dream was still vivid in his mind. For a moment, he didn’t know where he was. All he could see were bars of light cast on the floor by the sun as it shone through the window.
Then he heard the shouting from outside. He could only make out a few words from the hubbub, but it sounded like talk about the Frontier Zone, and war.
“Where are Ilvy and Jeriel?” He turned towards Maya. The girl shrugged.
“I don’t know. I just woke up when I heard all the shouting outside.”
