Chapter 34 The passageway was a tight squeeze: barely a metre wide and just over a metre and a half in height. Maya and Ben were just about able to stand up straight, but the bear-like András had to move carefully to avoid hitting his head on uneven rock surface. The walls were almost perfectly vertical and smooth, seemingly the work of master craftsmen. Candlelight filtering in from the shrine illuminated the beginning of the passageway, but gave way soon afterwards to pitch blackness. Erika signalled to András, who took an object from his bag that looked like a miniature firebrand and gave it to her. The captain rubbed the end of the stick, and a globe of light the size of a tennis ball appeared. The torch wasn’t powerful enough to illuminate the whole passage, but at least they didn’t
