Chapter 38
Ben came round slowly and gradually, blinking in confusion as his vision returned.
“Where are we?” he wondered aloud.
“I don’t know, but I’ve had enough of these surprises,” Erika said, pulling herself up from the floor.
“There’s some kind of light over there,” András said in a surprisingly calm voice. Soon enough, they saw the outlines of his bear-like frame staggering towards the light. Ben and Maya scrambled after him, afraid of being left alone in the dark.
They found themselves on the edge of a narrow escarpment. An elongated valley was spread out below their feet, with a crinkly grey mountain ridge opposite them. They weren’t sure how much time they’d spent wandering the passages and in the cavern, but winter had now fallen with a vengeance. It was bitingly cold, and
