Thomas looked at Diana's figure and sighed helplessly, "If it were before, Diana, you would indeed be the most suitable choice."
"But things have changed. You're no longer the unrecorded genius in their eyes."
"After that battle, after you officially joined the BEA and became the eighth Super Elite—the Ice Queen—you've become just like us."
"You're also a target marked by the Marking Symbol. Today, only Adam is suitable for this."
Upon hearing this, Diana was instantly speechless. She knew there was no issue with the words, but she still hoped there might be a more reliable method. She didn't want Adam to be plunged into such a dangerous situation.
Listening to Thomas's voice, Clark and the other judges were also silent. "Do you have the confidence? Are you willing to give it a try?" Thomas asked again, with some difficulty.
"I don't know if I can do it, and besides, why should I agree to something so strenuous and dangerous?" Adam shrugged slightly but didn't agree outright.
Hearing Adam's response, Thomas was initially taken aback, as if he hadn't expected such an answer, but he quickly became resigned.
Indeed, Adam was just a student and had no such obligation. And with his talent and strength, even in such a perilous situation, if he simply wanted to keep himself out of harm's way, it probably wouldn't be that difficult. Keeping oneself out of danger was also a smart choice, and there was no need to blame him for it. It was the responsibility of old-timers like himself.
"But..." Seeing the anxious yet helpless looks on everyone's faces, Adam spoke up again. "If you offer enough money, I might give it a shot."
The crowd, surrounding the seriously injured person lying on the ground, turned their heads in unison, looking at Adam with surprise mixed with some complexity. Was this a veiled agreement?!
They hoped Adam would step forward, yet they were also conflicted about wanting him to. The hope stemmed from the fact that, at present, this seemed to be the most likely optimal solution. The reluctance arose from the potential disastrous consequences if something went wrong! This could very well be the most tragic loss of geniuses in human history, one that would surely be recorded in the annals!
Not only would they lose Adam, the most unique genius ever, but the other one hundred and twenty-five students were also among the most promising and deserving of cultivation this year! Thomas dared not contemplate what would happen if they all got into trouble.
"Thank you," Clark said, his eyes slightly reddening as he looked at Adam, "this time, we old-timers owe you one!"
"This time, as long as you are alive, I'll give you my personal gold card! You can enjoy all services for free in any Dimotelin business worldwide!"
After speaking, Clark seemed to have no desire to stay any longer and rushed out. Norman also came over and patted Adam's shoulder with his strong hand.
"Good job!"
He then followed Clark's footsteps and rushed out as well.
Seeing their sentimental and emotional outpouring, Adam couldn't help but shrug and say, "So, about the money? Don't just get emotional!"
"Also, how long do you expect me to hold out?"
Thomas, seeing that Adam was still in the mood for jokes while he himself was in no joking mood, asked, "Is three hours possible?"
"Sure, then I want three million dollars!" Seeing that no one was addressing the matter at hand, Adam directly stated his price.
However, he didn't expect Thomas to stride over, grab his shoulder, and say:
"Remember this! If you really manage to hold out for three hours this time, forget about three million dollars, I'll give you thirty million dollars!"
After speaking, he gave Adam a deep look, then began to organize the students to gather. During this process, several more bloodied figures rushed in through the door, almost all of them delivering urgent reports. The situation outside had become extremely critical.
The students had never seen such a scene before and were very obedient, quickly gathering and beginning to head towards the underground venue. However, a few people led by Serena and Edward were not pleased, stating that they did not want to hide behind Adam and wanted to fight the enemies with him.
But in such extraordinary times, Thomas could not encourage their brave yet hindering actions. He directly scolded them harshly and forcibly "locked" all one hundred and twenty-five people inside.
Then he walked up to Adam again, nodded at him with a solemn and apologetic look in his eyes.
"Troubled times,"
"Entrusting such matters to a student is my dereliction of duty."
"Hold out for three hours; you're a hero of humanity!"
"Don't flatter me or put me on a pedestal. I'm just doing a job for the money." Adam impatiently waved his hand, watching as the others turned away, as Thomas left with the remaining people, and as Diana looked back with concern.
His gaze was calm and indifferent. For some reason, he disliked the burden of being labeled a hero; he always felt it was a kind of honor blackmail.
What was so great about being a hero? Once you became one, you probably couldn't make money anymore.
But in the end, he seemed to suddenly remember something and called out to Thomas's retreating figure:
"Hey, Thomas, I remember my bonus reward, you still promised me three hundred thousand dollars, right?"
"If anything happens, just give it to Diana. I owe her three hundred thousand dollars."
Hearing this, Diana could no longer hold back. She took a forceful deep breath, disregarding her slightly reddened eyes, and turned to face Adam.
Her teeth clenched, she was speechless for a while, and after a long time, she finally spoke:
"No accidents! I won't allow any accidents. You can't have any problems! I want the money you owe me, handed to me by you personally!"
Adam: "I don't think I'll have any problems either. I'm just saying 'what if.' I believe it's wise to always consider the worst-case scenario first."
"No 'what ifs'!" Diana interrupted Adam irritably before her voice softened again. "If something really happens to you, someone will be very heartbroken."
"I don't have any friends or family in this world. I'm a loner with no attachments. That's also why I dared to agree to this," Adam replied with a smile.
Although it was indeed dangerous, he didn't want to make the atmosphere feel like a parting of life and death.
"As for someone being sad for me? Who would be sad for me? I don't seem to be very likable either."
Diana looked at his still languid and casual smile, her lips trembling slightly, her eyes flickering as if she wanted to say something but was afraid to speak.
Finally, she lowered her head and whispered,
"Didn't you say you have an online friend who always plays online games with you?"
"If you can't play games with her, she would probably be very sad, right?"
Adam was a bit surprised by her sudden remark.
But he still shook his head with a smile and didn't respond.
"Promise me again, promise that you'll be fine, just like when you promised me you would get first place during the trial."
Diana looked straight into Adam's eyes, waiting for his response.
Afraid that she would delay the opportunity if she didn't leave soon, Adam hesitated for just two seconds and then said,
"Alright, I promise. Now go quickly."
"I'm actually fine here. After all, the enemies you're facing seems to be stronger. You're as young as me. Don't get into trouble."
Diana nodded vigorously upon hearing his promise.
"Okay, in three hours, I promise I'll be back!"
"Just three hours!"
With these words left behind, he turned into a streak of ice-blue light and flew out the door.
