Chapter 61 Flying

1340 Words
"Fun? Would you enjoy it if you were in my shoes?" Adam retorted dryly. Diana paused, coughed awkwardly, and admitted she wouldn’t mind the attention. Adam: "By the way, how did I pass out? Was I attacked?" Hearing Adam change the topic, Diana quickly relayed Richard’s theory. "Level 5?" Adam sat on the bed, staring blankly at his hands and clenching his fists tightly. "Is there anything special about level 5? I don’t feel any different." Diana shook her head. "No, level 5 is a qualitative leap. Reaching it without even enrolling is unheard of. You’ve officially entered the upper echelons’ radar." Adam: "What about you? Didn’t you reach level 5 when you enrolled?" Diana: "I was specially recruited—I didn’t need to enroll. It’s different for me." She stated matter-of-factly. Adam: "..." Diana: "By the way, superpowers come in many types: energy projection, physical enhancement, mental abilities, and so on." "For energy projection types like us, level 5 has a very clear marker—flight." "What?" Adam’s interest piqued instantly. "I can fly now? How does it work?" "It’s not something you can teach. It’s instinctual, like learning to crawl as a baby. You’ll have to figure it out yourself." "Don’t rush. After a week or two, it should feel as natural as walking." "Well, rest up. By the way, during the ceremony, senior students will also attend. At the end, there’s a segment where seniors challenge the top freshman." "Of course, it’s all friendly—one, to show new students that training at Orienta can significantly boost their strength; two, to remind the top freshman to stay humble and keep improving." "But..." Diana’s expression turned mischievous. "I doubt anyone will stand a chance against you." "Rest for now. I’ll go tell President Freud you’re awake so he can finalize the ceremony schedule." With that, Diana stood up and walked out the door. "Thanks for everything these past few days," Adam called after her, picking up the nutrient solution from the table. He then began focusing on the surging energy within him, trying to figure out how to fly. It was a strange sensation—controlling the energy without releasing it, letting it lift his body slowly into the air. Before long, Adam was bumping into walls and furniture around the room, even shattering an LED light fixture with his head. Flying, it seemed, required practice. --- On the open-air plaza of Orienta University, the freshmen had already taken their seats, while the senior students filled the stands on either side. The noise level was deafening. Most seniors had come for one reason—to scout potential girlfriends (or boyfriends) among the new batch of students. By this time, the ceremony should have already started. Thomas Freud was already standing on the stage, but instead of beginning, he awkwardly waited, allowing the students below to chat freely. Among the freshmen, the main topic of conversation revolved around Adam. "Hey, have you heard? This year’s top freshman is different—he’s supposedly an ultra-powerful superhuman." "I heard during lunch that his E-rated power has an S-class variant. He can communicate with the universe and knows everything." "I also heard that all the assessment-free students this year are under his command. Many came specifically to join him." "They say he single-handedly fought thousands of Deities recently and didn’t lose!" "Some even claim he’s a Deity himself." "Orienta is apparently his personal enterprise." Rumors ran rampant, growing wilder by the day. Some even claimed Adam was an ancient immortal who had lived for a thousand years. However, Orienta itself made no effort to quell these rumors. As the ceremony start time dragged on for over ten minutes, the murmurs in the crowd gradually quieted as they looked toward President Thomas Freud, wondering if he was angry. Seeing the students’ curious gazes, Thomas chuckled and spoke in a booming voice: "Ah, students, please be patient. We’ve encountered a small issue." "The top freshman for this year’s Opening Ceremony hasn’t arrived yet." His words caused an uproar across the entire plaza! No one expected that the Opening Ceremony, an event clearly of university-wide significance, would actually be postponed because a single person hadn’t shown up. At the moment, the freshmen didn’t feel much about it, but the older students were visibly displeased. "Damn, he dares to be late on the first day. This year’s top freshman is pretty arrogant." "Who is this guy? If he can’t make it, just start early. This is too disrespectful." "I’ve heard about him. Rumor has it that the reason the Opening Ceremony was delayed by two days is somehow related to him. No idea which big shot we’re dealing with." On the surrounding stands, upperclassmen were venting their frustrations relentlessly. It often goes like this—“elders” always feel a sense of superiority when facing “newcomers.” In a shaded area, a few older students were sitting. One of them, relatively calm, spoke up: "He must have some skill. Remember the Hunting Competition a few days ago? There was a Summoning Ceremony, and I heard he participated in resolving that incident the and made a significant contribution." Next to him, a guy wearing flip-flops chimed in: "I’ve heard about him too. The stories about this guy are all over the place—various versions, no one knows what’s true." "The top freshman, of course, must be a genius. Talent always comes with arrogance. It’s the same every year." "But every year, during the challenge matches, don’t they always get humiliated?" At this, the flip-flop guy burst out laughing, recalling how he felt invincible when he first entered the university, only to be crushed later. "Sigh, it's a rite of passage. Who among us didn’t think they were a genius back in the day?" "So, are you going to teach this year’s top freshman a lesson during the final challenge?" another classmate teased. "Sure, I’ll give him a lesson. Hahaha. I’ve been here for three years now—it feels a bit like bullying." As the students whispered among themselves, Thomas felt a headache coming on. What’s going on? This isn’t like Adam at all. Why is he being so disrespectful? He had promised to return! Thomas used his ability to project his voice into Diana’s ear: "What’s wrong with him? Didn’t he promise to come back? Why isn’t he here yet!" Diana, sitting in a corner of the field, couldn’t help but rub her temples. She didn’t know what was going on either. She couldn’t reach Adam and had no idea what he was doing. Just then, a figure appeared in the distant sky, speeding toward them rapidly. All the students tensed up, some even standing abruptly. Everyone knew that unless someone had innate flight abilities like Serena, flying was a privilege reserved for level-5 or higher power users. Level-5 was already rare in this world, equivalent to university teachers or elite combat personnel. But the figure’s flight path was erratic, zigzagging wildly, sometimes soaring high and other times diving low, as if drunk. Rationally, people guessed the person must be injured and rushing to inform the president of something urgent! Something had happened at Orienta University! Many knew the world might soon fall into chaos, but no one expected it to come so quickly. From a distance, they could faintly hear the person shouting something, though it was unclear. As the figure drew closer, they finally caught some words: "Make way! Make way! I can't control it!" "Can someone help me? I’m afraid I’ll crash into you!" Adam had been practicing non-stop since discovering his ability to fly yesterday. Although Diana told him it would take a week or two to master, he couldn’t wait. The feeling of flying was completely different from being on the ground—it was like his activity space had expanded from two dimensions to three. Today, he flew off without a care, lost track of time, and realized too late that the journey back was incredibly long.
