Chapter 1: Unraveling the unknown

1806 Words
Evelyn awoke to the quiet murmur of the morning, the gentle light filtering through the wooden slats of the morning, the gentle light filtering through the wooden slats of the cabin window. She lay in bed for a moment, listening to the sounds of the world outside--- a bird chirping in the nearby tree, the soft rustle of leaves dancing in the wind. The serenity of the remote cabin, nestled deep I the woods, enveloped her like a welcome balm after the storms of the past. Alice had left to go find her family after the chaos four years ago between Evelyn’s family and Daniel. Although they talk every now and then, she wishes she could be there with them. It had been four years since she and her family had fled the chaos of their previous life and this hidden sanctuary felt like a temporary reprieve from dark memories. She cast a glance at the small, handmade clock on the nightstand. The familiar tick-tock filled the air as the seconds drifter by. Time always felt both fleeting and eternal here. Evelyn took a deep breath, allowing herself a moment to relish the peace before the day began. She thought of her triplets--- now eleven years old--- who were still curled up in their shared bed, tangled in a cocoon of blankets. Lila, ever the early riser, would soon be the first one up, bouncing on the heels of her enthusiasm for the day. Olivia, the middle child and the dreamer, would take a little longer to surface, lost in her vivid imagination. And Sophia, the cautious youngest child would likely need a gentle nudge, hesitant to leave the warmth of slumber. As she pushed herself out of bed, Evelyn’s mind flickered to the journey that had brought them here. Adrenaline still coursed through her veins at the though of Daniel, her ex-boyfriend--- an evil presence she had hoped to leave behind forever. The memory of him, a festering wound she thought had healed, surged back like a haunting refrain. But today, was not the day for dwelling on such thought; today, she wants to focus on her daughters. Slipping quietly into the kitchen, Evelyn began preparing breakfast, the familiar sounds of sizzling eggs filling the air. The aroma wafted through the cabin, slowly drawing the girls from their dreams. As they sat around the small table, enjoying their meal, laughter and animated chatter filled the space, creating a sense of normalcy. Yet, beneath the surface of this idyllic morning, a darker current flowed. Just as she was clearing the plates, Evelyn’s phone buzzed on the counter, breaking her concentration. She stopped in her tracks and reached for it. Dev’s phone, lying right beside her, blinked ominously with an incoming text. ***Daniel***. Evelyn felt a chill through the cabin. Her hands trembled slightly as she picked up the phone. Dev had left it on the counter, unblocked, unaware of the chaos that could erupt from this single message. The text was cryptic and chilling: “I know where you are. The game is not over.” Her breath hitched in her throat, and her heart raced. Memories flooded her mind--- Daniel’s manic laughter, the oppressive weight of his power over her, the torment she had suffered. She fought to suppress the tidal wave of panic crashing against her composure. She needed to think of her daughters. They couldn’t know. Not yet. ‘Everything okay, Mom?” Lila asked, her eyes bright with curiosity. “Just… a reminder about work,” Evelyn replied, forcing a smile. As the girls finished their breakfast, Evelyn tried to cover the turmoil bubbling beneath her calm exterior. With ever giggle and smile shared between her daughters, she felt a fierce protectiveness surge within her. The triplets were so different from one another--- Lila’s adventurous spirit, Olivia’s superstitious imagination, and Sophia’s cautious disposition. Yet, they shared an unbreakable bond forged in the unique circumstances of their lives. But beneath this normalcy, Evelyn could not shake the growing dread. She recalled the fractured memories of her past, flashbacks that played like scenes from a horror film. Daniel’s face loomed large in her mind--- vivid flashes of nights spent in terror, every moment of fear etched in her very being. The day he had kidn*pped her, the knife glinting in his hand, and the memory of him skinning her from her waist down--- the visceral intensity of that moment left her shaken. Evelyn blinked away the memories, shaking her head as if she could physically dislodge them. Once again, her mind returned to her daughters. They were far too young to understand the dangers lurking in the shadows. Lila was already stretching her abilities, conjuring small sparks of magic in the air. Olivia had the rare gift of foresight, and Sophia was a cautious observer, keeping track of their power and how it could threaten their safety. Each of them was brimming with potential, struggling to understand their magical legacy while grappling with the uncertainty of a world that seemed increasingly unstable. The door swung open with a creak. Dev stepped inside, his expression taut and serious. The once serene atmosphere felt thick with an unspoken tension, a palpable disturbance that sent a ripple of unease through the air. As he closed the door behind him, the sound echoed like a warning bell. Evelyn looked up from the small table where she and the triplets had been eating their breakfast “What’s happening? Could it be about Daniel?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, already knowing that whatever it was wouldn’t be good. She shared with Dev the disturbing message from Daniel. “Evelyn…” Dev’s cautious approach drew her eyes back to him. “We can’t ignore this. We’ve been safe here, but we need to think about the girls.” Evelyn felt a familiar wave of dread wash over her. The triplets--- Lila, Olivia, and Sophia--- were the light in her life, their laughter, the melody that kept her grounded. But this message echoed the darkness she had worked tirelessly to shield them from. Would her past come crashing back into their peaceful existence? “Can we protect them, Dev?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly. The thought of Daniel’s return felt like a noose tightening around her throat. Each fleeting memory of terror threatened to engulf her once more. Dev stepped closer, reaching out to grasp her hand, grounding her in the present. “We will do whatever it takes,” he reassured her, but Evelyn could see the uncertainty in his eyes. She knew the weight they carried was heavy, and this new disturbance hinted at challenges they had long buried. As the air thickened with tension, Evelyn glanced out the window, seeking solace in the serene landscape outside. The trees stood tall, resilient against the winds, but beneath the surface, she felt the crackle of fear rising like an electric charge. The safety of their remote cabin felt more vulnerable than ever. ‘We need to talk to the girls,’ she said, her voice firmer now. “They deserve to know what’s happening.” The thought of frightening them sickened her, but the possibility of their innocence being shattered without warning made her heart ache even more. As she gathered her thought and settled her resolve, the sound of laughter floated in from the next room--- Lila, Olivia, and Sophia, blissfully unaware of the situation. “Evelyn, they’re kids. This will scare them.” “Maybe they deserve to know the truth,” she shot back, the heat of anger igniting her words. “They’re not just children anymore; they’re part of this world, whether we like it or not.” As their voices escalated, Lila appeared at the edge of the kitchen, her curious eyes darting between her parents. “What are you talking about?” Evelyn could see the tension hanging in the air--- a rift growing between her and Dev that seemed to stretch wider with each exchanged word. Navigating their strained relationship had become a tightrope act, balancing their parenting instincts with their desire to maintain a sense of normalcy. “We’re just having a grown-up conversation, sweetheart,” Dev said softly, but Lila frowned, sensing the disquiet. “Is it about Daniel?” “Where did you hear that?” Evelyn asked, her voice turning stern. Lila shrugged but didn’t back down. “I might’ve overheard.” Evelyn and Dev turned back to each other. “We can’t just brush this under the rug.” Evelyn insisted, the tightness of her throat betraying the fear she felt. “But we need to be united on this.” Dev looked away, as if grappling with something internal. “It’s complicated, Evelyn. We need to figure out how to protect them while also shielding them from the darkness.” Evelyn’s heart sank at the mention of divided trust, realizing that the cracks in their relationship were forming dangerously close to the surface. She sensed the growing mistrust between them, fueled by emotions they didn’t know how to articulate. Just then, they heard a knock at the door, a polite yet firm rapping that echoed ominously through the cabin. The triplets exchanged glances, and Evelyn’s stomach dropped. “Don’t answer it,” she urged Dev, her voice tinged with desperation. But curiosity had already piqued the girls’ attention as Olivia’s eyes brightened. “Maybe it’s someone friendly!” But unbeknownst to them, Evelyn sensed a looming threat--- an instinct honed by years of evading danger. Dev took a cautious step towards the door, his expression torn between curiosity and caution. “I’ll check. Just stay back.” He opened the door slowly, revealing a tall figure cloaked in a dark hooded jacket, obscuring their faces from view. A shiver ran down Evelyn’s spine; she felt the air change, a sudden charge of energy swirling in the room. “Are you Evelyn?” the stranger asked, their voice low and smooth, sending a ripple of alarm through Evelyn’s heart. “Who wants to know?” she replied, her voice hardening. “I’m here to help,” the figure stated, as if sensing her fear, “but trust doesn’t come easily, I understand that. Especially not now.” Evelyn exchanged a quick glance with Dev, the silent communication between them carrying the weight of their unspoken fear and doubt. The newcomer’s presence was conundrum, cloaked in mystery, fracturing the fragile peace they had tried so hard to build. “My name is Elias and you can trust me.” Evelyn looked towards the triplets to make sure they were standing back, far enough away so that Elias couldn’t see them. Can he be trusted? Or is he just a distraction while Daniel tracks them down?
