Chapter 3: Torn Apart

2023 Words
Finally, the darkness cleared and the light found its way in, piercing through the shadows like a promise of hope. Evelyn blinked against the brightness, her heart racing as her senses began to sharpen. She scanned the clearing, her pulse quickening as panic surged within her—where was everyone? “Olive!” she yelled, recognizing the shape of one of the triplets lying motionless on the cold ground. Rushing over, she dropped to her knees beside Olivia, her breath hitching in her throat. “Olivia, sweetheart, can you hear me?” She gently shook her daughter’s shoulder, desperate for a response. Slowly, Olivia stirred, her eyes fluttering open, a mixture of confusion and fear etched across her delicate features. “Mom?” she whispered, her voice barely rising above the rustle of leaves. “It’s me, honey! Thank goodness you're okay!” Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief, wrapping her arms around her daughter and pulling her close. The intensity of the moment washed over her like a wave, and for a brief instant, she allowed herself to revel in the warmth of Olivia’s embrace. But the reality of their situation pressed down on her, and she quickly released her daughter, scanning their surroundings with urgency. “We have to get out of here. Now.” They scrambled back to the safety of the cabin, gathering essential items from the worn shelves—warm blankets, some snack bars, and a hastily packed water bottle. The once-cozy space felt suffocating now, its charm fading in the shadow of fear. As they stepped outside, the crisp air bit at their skin, and Evelyn felt the unease creep back in like a predator stalking its prey. “Where’s everyone else?” Olivia asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty. Evelyn's heart sank at the question, words cascading into her mind, but all she could manage was a shaky, “I don’t know yet.” The impressive trees loomed overhead, their branches stretching high into the sky, creating a canopy of dread above them. “But we’re going to find them. I promise.” With every step they took down the overgrown path, Evelyn fought to keep her thoughts in order. The pieces were coming together, but the realization felt like a cold weight in her chest. It was Daniel who had taken her family. Flashes of the darkness enveloping them consumed her thoughts, a haunting reminder of how easily trust could become betrayal. Elias’s face from their earlier encounters flickered in her mind—a visage of calm and reassurance that had turned treacherous. She had let him into their home, trusted him with secrets and fears, and now he had handed them over to the claws of danger. Anger simmered beneath her skin, igniting a fire within her that urged her to act. “Mom, I don’t like this place,” Olivia said, her voice a trembling whisper as they continued down the winding path. Evelyn forced a soothing tone, though her heart raced. “I know, love. It’s okay. We just have to keep going.” They moved further into the woods, Evelyn’s gut twisting with worry. She couldn't shake the memories of Dev's steady presence beside her, the sweet laughter of her other daughters, Lila and Sophia, echoing in her mind. They were separated—her family was in danger and every minute spent lost increased the threat of their separation becoming permanent. Olivia suddenly halted, her eyes widening as she pointed to a footprint in the soft earth—a half-formed print that made Evelyn's pulse quicken. “Look! There’s a footprint!” “That’s definitely your Dad’s,” Evelyn said, recognizing Dev's familiar boot sole. Hope flared in her heart. “They can’t have gone too far.” Just as they began to move again, an unsettling chill crept through the clearing. The hairs on the back of Evelyn’s neck bristled as she felt the encroaching menace. Shadows danced in the periphery, shapes shifting together in a disconcerting rhythm. “Mom, I feel… something,” Olivia said, her voice quaking. “Stay close,” Evelyn instructed, pulling Olivia behind the thick trunk of a massive oak. Panic surged in her chest as she leaned closer to listen. Muffled voices drifted through the trees, each word ricocheting like a distant echo—something was amiss. “Daniel wants them now. He doesn’t care about the rest. He’s made his choice,” a voice said, bitter and low. Evelyn felt her breath hitch in her throat, fury bubbling beneath the surface. That name again. Daniel, the one she had once loved, now cast a long shadow over her family. “Thought Elias was supposed to keep them safe. What’s happening?” another voice replied, tinged with frustration. “What’s done is done. We’ll get what we need,” the first voice stated dismissively, laced with urgency. Evelyn clenched her jaw, an anger boiling within her. Hollow sentiments of trust shattered like glass, and the chilling realization hit her—this wasn’t just about her family anymore. The threat was bigger, more powerful, reaching out its treacherous hand to ensnare everything she held dear. “Mom, what do we do?” Olivia whispered, fear evident in her wide eyes. Evelyn knelt down to her daughter's level, determination hardening her expression. “We’re going to find Dad, Lila, and Sophia. We’re going to save them, and we’re going to make sure Daniel pays for this—whatever it takes, but I need you to be brave.” Olivia nodded, steeling herself against the darkness creeping closer, and Evelyn felt a surge of gratitude mixed with determination. They had faced challenges before, but never like this. The stakes were higher than ever, and every fiber of her being screamed for action. “We need a plan,” she said quietly, formulating her thoughts into coherence as she scanned the area, searching for any sign of movement. “We can’t confront him directly—not yet. We need to gather more information, see if we can track down Dev and the girls first.” With newfound resolve, she led Olivia back into the shadows of the trees, deeper into the ominous woods, making sure to tread lightly on the carpet of leaves underfoot. The fleeting sounds of nature felt drowned in a cacophony of her racing thoughts—the howling winds, the rustling branches—all reminders of how fragile their existence had become. Evelyn kept Olivia close as they moved forward. The earlier panic transformed into strategic caution; every tree seemed to morph into a potential ally or adversary. As they traversed the increasingly dense woods, Evelyn felt the weight of her responsibility for her family, a mantle she wouldn’t relinquish, not now. Hours passed in tense silence, their surroundings transforming from familiar to alien. With each careful step, Evelyn felt the stirrings of something deeper within herself, an instinct awakening that she had always known but never had to employ. With every heartbeat, her resolve fortified—this was her family, and she would move heaven and earth to get them back. Suddenly, they arrived at a small clearing, the remnants of campfires and discarded items scattered about. Evelyn felt a rush of dread as she noticed torn fabric—a familiar print from her daughters’ matching dresses. “Oh no,” she whispered, kneeing beside the remnants as the realization set in. “They’ve been close.” “Mom, do you think they’re still here?” Olivia asked, her voice trembling like the leaves overhead. “I hope so, but we need to be careful. Daniel can’t be far,” Evelyn said, her voice firm. “We’re not alone in this. We’ll find them.” As they moved through the remnants of the camp, a low rustling sound caught Evelyn’s attention, sending a pulse of anxiety through her. With instinct kicking into overdrive, she signaled for Olivia to be quiet as they crouched low and listened. “…he’s looking for more… we can’t let them stay out longer,” an unfamiliar voice said urgently. “If the power awakens, it could change everything.” Evelyn’s heart raced—a power, an awakening? The words tumbled in her mind like a jigsaw puzzle, trying to connect the pieces. Could this relate back to the peculiar occurrences that had been plaguing their family? “Can we trust Elias?” another voice interjected, skeptical and wary. “What if he’s in on this?” Evelyn's breath caught in her throat as she recognized this voice—it belonged to someone from their past, someone she hadn’t thought about in a long time. She recalled the deceptive familiarity that had once lulled her into a false sense of security. “Elias is a wild card. We need to follow the plan. He’ll either help or hinder the process,” the first voice continued, and the conversation faded into a murmur, the figures looming just beyond the tree line. With a sudden intake of breath, Evelyn realized the danger of this knowledge—if they were doubting Elias, then their leverage might be able to turn the tide in her favor. “Olivia, we need to move. We have to find a way to draw them out,” she whispered urgently. “If we can create a distraction, maybe we can catch them off guard.” A flicker of determination sparked in Olivia's eyes as she nodded, understanding the gravity of her mother’s plan. In these vast woods filled with shadows, they would become shadows themselves, unseen and calculated in their response. “Do you see anything we can use?” Evelyn asked, scanning the clearing for anything that might serve as a tool to execute their distraction. A moment later, Olivia grabbed a handful of small stones, revealing a mischievous grin. “We can throw these towards the other side of the clearing and create chaos.” “Perfect!” Evelyn encouraged, the fear in her heart transitioning into a burning resolve. “Let’s position ourselves just behind that cluster of boulders. When you’re ready, toss them as far as you can; make it sound like something is rushing through the underbrush.” They quickly made their way to the hiding spot, hearts racing as they took their positions behind the boulders. Evelyn felt adrenaline coursing through her veins, pushing her forward like a coiled spring ready to release. “On three,” she murmured, locking eyes with Olivia. “One… two… three!” With a determined throw, Olivia launched the stones, causing a cacophony of noise as they hit the ground across the clearing. A chorus of startled gasps erupted from the other side as the figures turned, scrambling for cover, allowing the Evelyn and Olivia their moment of chance. “Now! Go!” Evelyn urged, leading the charge out from behind the boulders, heart pounding in her chest as hope surged through her. They darted into the woods, but Evelyn kept her ears sharp, alert to the sounds of the chaos they had caused. In the distance, voices rose in confusion, footsteps racing away as fear took hold. “Mom, where do we go?” Olivia asked, breathless as they moved deeper into the foliage, blending with the shadows that had become their allies. “We find Dev and the girls!” Evelyn replied, her determination unwavering. “They’re our priority. Then we confront Daniel and Elias together.” Though the fear trembled along their edges, resolve burned bright within. As twilight settled across the woods, enveloping them in a cloak of safety, Evelyn felt both fear and urgency tethered to her heart. The threat was daunting, but the strength of her love intertwined with her resolve. They would face the darkness together, as a family, ready to reclaim what had been taken from them. The path ahead remained shrouded in uncertainty, but the lights of family and unity illuminated their way forward, and Evelyn steeled herself for the battle that lingered just beyond the horizon. They would reclaim their lives; the fight had just begun.
