A Wolf’s Love Chapter 2: Hockey and Homicide

There’s a hockey game, Shawn gets angry because he has a mate obviously

Saturday had come faster than Shawn had anticipated and soon enough it was 6pm and he was with his team warming up.

“Mendes, you feeling alright?” his coach asked him. “You look a bit off today”

“I’m good. Just nervous” Shawn smiled.

“Don’t be, but for the record, you can always talk to me, I don’t want any of that ‘boys have no feelings crap’ in this team” Andrew said. “And if it’s” he stopped and lowered his voice. “Pack business, everyone thought you did well at the last event” his coach told him.

“Thanks coach” Shawn smiled.

“SHAWN!” Cameron called out. “There’s tacos outside, c’mon”

Jogging to catch up with his friends and pointedly avoiding Kiera Stanley’s gaze he stopped when he finally reached them. Weaving through a crowd should be considered a sport when it came to high school hockey matches. 

"There are tacos. I'm eating Taco's" Kyle said happily. "What do you think Shawn?" he asked excitedly. 

"I think it's a good idea" Shawn agreed, ignoring the amused looks of his friends. 

Kyle was a year younger than him. A werewolf also. And he idolized Shawn. Something Cameron and Brian loved to make fun of in their spare time. 

Suddenly he caught that ever so enticing smell of vanilla and perfume. His mate was here.

Looking up he saw Katie followed by Ava step out of Liam's car. His wolf growled. What if something was going on between them? What if he wanted something from Ava? Of course, he did. She was beautiful. 

"Onion?" Cameron asked?

"What?" Shawn quizzed, his brow furrowing.

"Do you want onions with your nachos?" Cameron asked.  

"Sure, I’m not fussy" Shawn said, half not in the conversation as he searched for his mate in the crowd. 

She was so small he couldn't spot her. Shawn and his wolf didn't like that one bit. What if she was in danger and couldn't spot her? Something could happen to her and he wouldn't even know it had happened. Suddenly he spotted her red jacket

As a mate he was fine tuned to her senses. Their souls were interwoven by higher forces. So, when he got the feeling something was up and he knew it wasn't him, he somehow managed to get his friends to migrate closer and he completely zoned out of the conversation to see what was wrong. 

"Shawn. My friend. The game is the other way. You know, in the arena. We're walking the opposite way- oh hey look, it's Katie and Liam" Cameron said snapping out of his game mode. 

"Ooo and her friend is with them, the hot one" Cameron said, his gaze turning somewhat hungry looking. 

"MY MATE" Shawn's wolf growled. 

"Y'know, she has a name" Kyle muttered. 

Suddenly Shawn and his wolf liked Kyle a lot more. Until he realized Kyle said it a bit too defensively for him to simply know his mates name. Did he have something to do with her life? Was he in her life?

"What is her name?" Cameron asked curiously. "She's gorgeous" 

"Ava" Kyle answered. "Ava Prescott, she's in my year, she's really nice" he smiled as if remembering their interactions vividly. 

Shawn could feel his wolf going mad. 

"How do you know her?" Shawn asked. 

Kyle suddenly seemed ecstatic to tell Shawn about her. 

"Oh well she's into photography, so she always passes us in the basement, she never ignores me, always smiles and says hello. She always offers me a muesli bar too!" Kyle explained enthusiastically. 

'So, he does know her' his wolf growled lowly. 

"She's in the photography club?" Cameron asked. 

"She helps them out, her friend Lily is in it, so she helps out with some stuff if she has free time which is rare, she's always busy" Kyle explained. "really busy" 

"You sound unhappy about that" Brian observed. 

"She's really nice y'know, girlfriend material. Plus, you don't find girls like her often" Kyle sighed. 

"Girls like her?" Shawn asked? 

He needed to know, just how well did Kyle know his mate?

"Well she's really bright and peppy, but she's also quite cynical and has a very dry sense of humor, very sarcastic and she's so witty y'know? She loves food too, so we'd get along so well. She likes photography, I mean she's really good at it too, takes beautiful shots. She's a good swimmer too, loves the water and she's a cheerleader, she cheers for the school and for the local club. She's really likes dogs and harry Potter, loves superhero movies too, she's just great" Kyle began rambling. 

"So, what's the problem, ask her out" Cameron suggested. 

'I will kill them all' his wolf growled while Shawn told him to calm down, not really feeling any calmness himself.

"She hates men" Kyle stated simply. 

"She's gay?" Shawn blurted out rather loudly, causing all his friends to look at him questioningly. 

"No, she just doesn't like boys, you should've seen her reaction to Jesse asking her out" Kyle smiled. "She really went for it, screamed at him in front of all the basement. She got detention for it and everything" Kyle laughed. "Not that he didn't deserve it, the prick" Kyle muttered. 

This was odd behavior for Kyle, he was quite sweet and very nice, but then again, everyone knew Jesse's reputation. 

"Hey look, Josh is with them, let's say hi" Cameron suggested. 

Shawn couldn't be more grateful for the suggestion.

"Hey man" Josh smiled when they approached. "All ready for the big game?"  

"Hell yeah" Shawn said hoping to catch Ava's attention. 

It worked. She heard his voice and looked up from whatever her and Katie were staring at on one of their phones. He caught her eye and smiled. She gave him a small one in return. 

"Hey Kyle" she smiled at his friend. 

'Why won't she look at us? Surely she can feel the bond?' his wolf whined. 

"Hey" he smiled back. 

"It's Ava, right?" Cameron asked. 

She looked alarmed for a second before smiling a little. "Yeah, Ava. Cameron?" she asked. 

"That's me, so Kyle over here tells me you're into photography?" Cameron began a conversation.

"Uhh, yeah, I am" Ava said hesitantly. 

"So, are you behind the camera or the model?" he grinned at her. 

He was trying to charm her. How dare he!

"Oh" she breathed a small laugh. "Behind the camera" she smiled bashfully. 

"That's a shame, but I suppose it's not all bad" he shrugged. 

She frowned before he explained. 

"Kyle over here wanted to get more into photography, maybe you could teach him a few things" Cameron suggested. 

Shawn had to give it to Cameron, he could be a very good friend when he wanted to be Like now, when he was helping Kyle out by getting the girl who he liked to spend time with him. Shawn would've been pleased, if said girl wasn't his mate and one true love. 

"Why didn't you tell me?" Ava protested suddenly becoming more confident and livelier. "Of course, I'll teach you, why didn't you say anything?" she whined, whacking Kyle's arm. 

"Ow" he pouted. 

"Oh please, you didn't even feel that" Ava scoffed. "Come find me, you usually know where I am" 

"Sure, thing Ava" Kyle smiled.

"Ava incoming" Katie whispered in Ava's ear. 

No human would've picked up on it, but they were all wolves. 

"Hey guys" Jake said walking up to them with Nathan. 

It was then Shawn noticed it. 

Ava's heartbeat picked up slightly, her scent changed, she was more nervous and she had a small but excited smiled on her face and a hopeful look in her eye. 

Shawn was shattered. She liked this guy. And of everyone, it had to be Jake. 

Human Jake. A guy he couldn't alpha order to stay away from his mate. 

"Hey Ava" Jake smiled down at her, staying closely behind her. 

"Hi" she smiled, her voice quiet and distant. 

Everyone seemed to go off into their own conversation while Jake pulled his mate a few feet back. Immediately Shawn fine-tuned his hearing to their conversation.

"So, how's your day been?" Ava asked him shyly. 

"Pretty good, we had a good training today, coach didn't make us run too much" Jake told her with a sigh. "But it was cold in the gym unfortunately. I take it you were snuggled up with your blankets all day?" he asked her. 

"My blankets and my little sister" Ava smiled. "She got cold and jumped in bed" Ava explained. 

"What if I got cold and jumped in your bed?" he asked slyly. "For cuddles of course" he smirked when her jaw dropped slightly and her face went slightly red. 

'Do something!' his wolf immediately growled. 'Like what? It'd freak her out' Shawn fired back. 

""I'd suggest an electric blanket" Ava quipped back. 

"Mum won't let, suppose you'd have to share with me" Jake fired back. "I'd keep you warm, you're so small, you'd be great for cuddles" he smiled. 

She suddenly shivered. 

Jake pounced on the opportunity. "Come here" he mumbled. 

"Where, I'm right in front of you" Ava protested slightly.

"Here" Jake whispered pulling her towards him by her jacket so she crashed into him so he could wrap his arms around her. "Better?" he asked, knowing fully well the effect he was having on her. 

"that should be us holding her" his wolf growled again. 'How dare he touch her'

"Mmhm" she hummed. Looking anywhere but his face, she let out a small but very content sigh. 

"You feel so nice like this" Jake mumbled, bending slightly. When he next moved, Shawn's wolf lost it. "We could be doing this in much warmer conditions" Jake muttered before nuzzling her ear and moving to her neck. 

'OUR SPOT! HE TOUCHES MATE IN OUR SPOT! GET HIM AWAY FROM MATE' his wolf screamed. This time Shawn couldn't agree more.

"Hey guys, let's head in now" he quickly said, cutting off whatever conversation they were having. "JAKE, you coming?" his voice boomed louder than necessary, causing his mate to jump slightly. 

'I think we just scared her' his wolf said dejectedly. 'I think so too' Shawn agreed. 

They both moved closer to the main group before Katie winked at her and she scowled playfully. "Shut up" Ava muttered while Katie continued looking amused. 

It was official. 

He absolutely hated Jake as of now. 

As he and the boys moved towards where they would discuss strategy and tactics, he kept an eye on where his mate moved, sitting right in front near the center of the rink. She could watch him the entire time. He was excited. And then Jake placed himself right next to her and Shawn’s already salty mood soured instantly. Stupid human.

Throughout the match Shawn’s wolf was endlessly whining and restless with the need to be around his mate. Every time he looked over to the area she was seated in, he got angrier and angrier and it didn’t help to have his wolf goading him into attacking Jake. Now as a human, he could hardly know that Shawn’s mate was in fact Shawn’s mate, but that didn’t stop his wolf from picturing his decapitated head laying at his feet.

“Dude, what’s going on with you?” Cameron asked.

“Nothing, I’m fine” Shawn dismissed as he went for the opposition with the puck.

He didn’t know what made him do it but he glanced back in his mates direction before catching a glimpse of Jake wrapping his arms around her from behind and nuzzling her neck again making her giggle and squirm, he just knew she’d be blushing in seconds and he lost all control, ramming into the opponent with brute force, knocking him over in an instant.

The echo of shock throughout the crowd was evident, momentarily distracting Ava from Jake to see someone had been hurt. The referee blew his whistle immediately, rushing out to see the guy Shawn had knocked over. Shawn suddenly felt the rage leave his body when he noticed Ava staring at his opponent with a worried expression, even Jake looked uneasy.

Shawn looked down and realized he recognized his opponent. It was Lucas Johnson, Beta Johnsons son from the Black Alder pack, their packs were neighbors and got on well.

“Shawn what the hell” he groaned.

At least Shawn knew he hit a wolf and not a human who wouldn’t heal as fast.

“Man, I’m so sorry” Shawn said, finally catching up to what had happened.

“I don’t think you know your own strength” Lucas grinned.

“Yellow card” the ref called.

“No, it’s fine, he just needs to say sorry” Lucas said getting up with the help of the ref and one of his teammates. “Shawn your eyes man” he said quietly so only wolf hearing would pick it up. “Hey coach can we call a time out for a second?” he called, confusing the audience. Both teams also looked confused.

Shawn and their coaches skated off to a corner.

“Shawn your eyes” Lucas’s coach, Bennet whispered.

“I know” Shawn groaned shaking his head.

“What’s going on man?” Lucas asked.

“I need to sit out” Shawn decided.

“I’ll go with him” Lucas nodded.

As they walked off, their coaches both put on an additional player confusing the hell out of Cameron and Brian.

“okay, why are your eyes glowing like you’re about to wolf out?” Lucas quizzed.

“He won’t stop touching her!” Shawn growled.

“Who? Aaliyah? Man, she’s with my sister!” Lucas laughed, but his face froze when he noticed that Shawn wasn’t looking at Aaliyah, but in the complete opposite direction.

“You found her, didn’t you?” Lucas realized.

“Yes” he growled.

“Jake won’t stop touching her, he touched her neck, he’s cuddling her” Shawn grunted.

Lucas laughed.

“Man, I do not miss that feeling, where is she?” Lucas asked.

“Up there, red coat, small, gorgeous smile” Shawn moaned in irritation.

“She’s hot” Lucas nodded, only causing Shawn to growl.

“Calm down buddy” Lucas reminded him. “I have my own mate, remember?”

“She’s so f*****g pretty” Shawn huffed out.

“Hey, if she’s your mate why’s she all cuddled up with him? What’d you do to piss her off?” Lucas asked. “Mel hugged my f*****g packs player when I got her mad”

“She doesn’t know I’m her mate” Shawn grunted.

“What do you mean she doesn’t kno-” Lucas suddenly stopped his question. “She’s human?”

Shawn nodded.

“But you’re an Alpha! Alpha’s are rarely mated to anyone who doesn’t have wolf blood” Lucas said dumbly.

“I am aware of that funnily enough” Shawn snapped.

“Dude have fun explaining all this to her, humans take time” Lucas said dryly.

“She’s got a guy drooling over her, he’s human too, so it’s hardly like I can order him to f**k off” Shawn muttered.

“She may be human, but she can still feel the pull, just not as strongly as us” Lucas told him, “my brother’s mate is human”

“Well what the hell did he do?” Shawn asked desperately.

“He took his time, they’d been together just over a year when he finally told her, it almost killed him. Plus, she freaked out, so expect that, cos she didn’t talk to him for a fortnight” Lucas told him honestly.

“A whole year” Shawn groaned.

“A year and two weeks” Lucas grinned.

“We gotta get back to the game” Shawn muttered looking at the time.

“Come on, let’s go find your soulmate again, the last buzzer is gonna go off any second now” Lucas nodded.

Heading back, they parted ways and joined their respective teams.

“Where’d you go man?” Brian asked him.

“I kinda lost it for a second” Shawn admitted defeatedly.

“Everything okay man?” Brian asked him.

“I think so” Shawn muttered.

He was good, until his wolf senses that were fine tuned to pick up his mate tingled and he felt her near him. His eyes rapidly searching he couldn’t spot her red jacket, but he spotted Jake, his arm around his mate, her jacket tied around her waist, grey hoodie making her look cozy and suddenly the anger returned.

“Woah, dude your eyes” Cameron said, pulling him in the other direction as Brian followed.

“What’s gotten into you?” Brian asked, suddenly noticing his eyes and where they were looking.

“Why’s Ava making you-?” Cameron asked and suddenly realized.

“Oh my God, she’s- you’ve found her, haven’t you?” Brian supplied for his awestruck friend.

“Ava’s my mate” Shawn admitted to his starstruck friends.

“Holy s**t” they both exclaimed in sync.

CLIFFHANGER.
