Chapter 16After spending a week preparing the farmstead for winter, I ventured into town and bought a load of peat from the trader who customarily brought the fuel down from Canada. Despite the hateful sign at the town limits, no one gave me a second look. I also scoured the now abandoned Stubblefield place for charred timbers and any other fireplace fuel to add to our woodpile. Spring would be a long time coming.
I was beginning to fret…nay, that is a misnomer. I fretted from the day he left…but I was beginning to worry before Todoh tore off the cabin porch to joyously announce Matthew’s return. I mounted the hill and watched my lover approach. My sphincter tingled in anticipation of the demand he would place on it.
