I hugged a pillow, lying face down on the sofa, barely managing to lift my heavy eyelids. I could only nod in response.
But Carl quickly cut to the chase, "Barnett doesn't know you're here, does he?"
I didn't quite catch his meaning and groggily answered, "Of course not. I don't even know him." After a moment, I suddenly realized what he had said. "Wait, who did you say?" I was finally waking up.
"Barnett." Carl's smile didn't seem malicious, but to me, it felt a little out of place. I should have guessed—he had some kind of connection to Barnett.
I tossed aside the pillow, poured myself a glass of water, and said while drinking, "Don't worry. I already told my parents where I am last night. By now, Barnett should know too."
"You're not running away from the wedding?" Carl looked a bit puzzled. It seemed this girl was not as simple as she appeared.
I swirled the water in the glass. Sunlight filtered through the glass, sparkling. My eyes were fixed on that sunlight, trapped in the water, unable to escape. "Do you think I can escape? Besides, I'm just here to see my grandpa. I only informed them a little late."
Nerys stood nearby and reached out to knock the glass out of my hand. She said, "There's a bug that just flew into your water."
But I knew what she really meant—sunlight trapped in a glass could escape if the glass was broken.
I glanced up at Carl and smiled. "Mr. Carl, do you still have business here? After all, this is a girls' room."
"I believe I owe this young lady an apology for my rude behavior yesterday," he said, his gaze falling on Nerys. That familiar feeling in his eyes—I could read it easily.
I quickly rushed to Nerys's side, linking my arm with hers. I didn't know what had happened yesterday, but this man was being way too obvious. I buried the hostility in my eyes and playfully leaned my head on Nerys's shoulder. "My Nerys is so generous, she wouldn't care about something like that, would she?"
Nerys gave me an irritated glare and awkwardly shook off my hand, then turned her attention to Carl. "I forgive you. You can go now."
Without a word, Carl left.
I sat back on the sofa and poured myself another glass of water. "So, now can you tell me what happened between you two?"
---
"OMG! Seriously? Do you really have to scare me like this?" I rolled my eyes as Carl stepped out of his car. He'd been following me in his car the whole time.
He brushed a few wind-tousled strands of hair from my face. "Scare you? How could I?"
I grabbed his hand, puffing out my cheeks in annoyance. "You are scaring me. I've already told you, I'm not going to tell you about Nerys's past. Besides, with your connections, it's hard to believe you haven't figured it out yet."
He gently pinched my chin. "You're a more interesting woman than Nerys. I don't know why you're playing this game, but what I want—I won't give up."
I leaned in close to his ear, resting my head on his shoulder as I spoke slowly, emphasizing each word, "The man who had Nerys did something you'll never be able to do in your lifetime. I suggest you don't interfere with them. Otherwise, even I don't know what I might do."
Then I pulled away, smiling brightly. "Be sure to remember my words, okay? Now, take me to the swimming pool."
