Bonus Scene: The Ledger of Regrets The scent of roasting coffee beans and expensive pastries inside the artisanal café on Madison Avenue usually brought Zara a sense of calm, but today, the air felt charged with an impending reckoning. She sat at a secluded corner table, her emerald-green silk blouse gleaming under the warm pendant lights. A single security guard from Damien’s private detail stood discreetly near the entrance, his sharp eyes monitoring the room. The glass door of the café chimed, and Marcus entered. He looked exactly as he had four months ago—his hair meticulously styled, wearing a mid-tier designer suit he had bought with the very first bonus check from his tech startup. He was looking around frantically until his eyes landed on Zara. A confident, familiar smirk spread across his face as he walked over, adjusting his lapels. He still thought he held the power. He still thought she was the girl who would cry over his texts. "Zara," Marcus said smoothly, sliding into the leather chair opposite her without invitation. "I have to admit, I was shocked when your assistant called me. I didn't think you'd want to see me after how things ended. But I guess you realized that blocking each other was immature." Zara didn't answer immediately. She elegantly lifted her porcelain cup, took a slow sip of her macchiato, and set it down with a soft, deliberate *clink*. Her amber eyes locked onto his, completely devoid of the warmth or desperation he was used to. Marcus shifted slightly, his smirk faltering under her freezing glare. He finally noticed the immaculate tailoring of her clothes, the heavy gold watch on her wrist, and the stoic guard watching his every move from the doorway. "You... look different," Marcus stammered, trying to regain his footing. "Listen, I know you’re probably still hurt about the breakup text. But you have to understand the pressure I was under. Pushing a tech startup to major venture capitalists requires a certain image, Zara. I couldn't be tied down by... well, by someone working double shifts at a lounge. It was purely a business decision. No hard feelings, right?" "A business decision," Zara repeated, her voice a low, velvety baritone that carried a terrifyingly calm weight. "That’s funny, Marcus. Because I'm here to talk about business today, too." Marcus blinked, letting out a nervous chuckle. "What do you mean? Did you find a new front-desk job or something? If you need a recommendation—" "I don't need a recommendation from a man whose company is currently bleeding out," Zara interrupted smoothly. She opened her leather portfolio and drew out a single, stamped financial document, sliding it across the table. Marcus frowned, picking it up. As his eyes scanned the text, the color drained from his face so fast he looked as though he might faint. "This... this is the debt acquisition mandate for my startup," Marcus whispered, his hands trembling violently. "King International just bought out eighty percent of our primary venture debt. Why would a multi-billion-dollar logistics firm buy a boutique tech incubator?" "Because I ordered them to," Zara said, leaning forward, resting her interlocking fingers on the table. The sheer aura of power she radiated made Marcus shrink back into his seat. "Four months ago, Marcus, you blocked my number because you were 'moving in different circles.' You forgot that for two years, I paid your rent, bought your groceries, and funded the very prototype you used to get your investment." "Zara, please, I can explain—" "You don't need to explain anything," she cut him off, her voice slicing through his excuses like a diamond blade. "You wanted to play in the big leagues, Marcus, but you forgot to check who owns the stadium. As the co-CEO and majority stakeholder of King International, I now hold the absolute veto power over your company’s funding line. If I sign this mandate, your credit lines are frozen by five PM. Your startup will be forced into bankruptcy before the weekend." Marcus stared at her, his jaw slack, his eyes wide with absolute horror. The girl he had trampled on, the waitress he had discarded like trash, was now holding his entire life's work in her manicured hands. "You... you're the secret King heiress?" he choked out, the reality hitting him like a physical blow. "Zara, please. We were engaged! We loved each other. You can't destroy my life over a mistake. I was stupid, I was blind—" "You were selfish," Zara corrected coldly, straightening her spine. "And you calculated your move based on the assumption that I would always stay at the bottom. You were wrong." A shadow suddenly fell over the table. Damien King stepped into the light, his massive, imposing frame instantly dominating the space. He wore a sharp charcoal suit, his dark eyes fixed on Marcus with a lethal, predatory intensity that made Marcus choke on his breath. Damien didn't look at Marcus like a rival; he looked at him like an insect that had dared to crawl near his property. Damien placed his large hand firmly on the slope of Zara’s shoulder, a blatant, possessive display of alignment and ownership that left no room for doubt. "Is this the man who was wasting your time, sweetheart?" Damien murmured, his low, gravelly baritone vibrating through the quiet café. He didn't break eye contact with Marcus, his gaze narrowing into slits of pure black ice. "He was just leaving," Zara said smoothly, looking up at Damien with a soft, confident smile that she had never once given Marcus. Marcus looked between the ruthless billionaire CEO and his former fiancée, realizing with a sinking heart that Zara hadn't just moved into a different circle—she had conquered the entire sky. And she had a king standing guard beside her. "I’m leaving the debt acquisition active, Marcus," Zara said, turning her attention back to her terrified ex-fiancé one last time. "King International will manage your company now. Every dollar you spend, every piece of software you code, will require my signature. You wanted a business relationship? Now you have one. Don't speak out of turn, and don't make a mistake. Because unlike me... Damien doesn't give warnings." Marcus scrambled out of his chair, nearly knocking his coffee over as he grabbed his folder and practically sprinted out of the café, the glass door chiming behind his frantic retreat. Damien watched him slide into the crowded street before he sat down in the vacant chair, his intense, obsessive gaze locking onto Zara’s face. He reached across the table, his large, warm hand wrapping tightly around hers, his thumb tracing a slow, possessive circle against her skin. "You handled that beautifully, co-CEO," Damien whispered, his voice thick with a dark, consuming devotion. "I learned from the best," Zara murmured, a dangerous, beautiful smile touching her lips as she squeezed his hand back. The ledger of regrets was officially balanced, and her empire had never felt more secure.
