Chapter 5: The Watchful Eye The air inside Damien’s private office on the top floor of King International felt thick enough to suffocate. After the security breach in the garage, he had pulled Zara into his personal sanctuary, locking the heavy mahogany doors behind them. He hadn't spoken a word for twenty minutes, his intense gaze fixed entirely on her as he paced the length of the room like a caged panther. Zara sat on the edge of a plush leather sofa, her hands tightly clasped in her lap. The emerald-green suit suddenly felt tight around her chest. Every time she looked up, she caught Damien staring at her—not with his usual clinical coldness, but with a raw, dark intensity that sent a strange, electric shiver through her veins. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Zara finally snapped, unable to handle the crushing silence. "If you think I sabotaged your car to look innocent, just say it." Damien stopped pacing. He walked over to the sofa, his steps slow and deliberate, and leaned down until his face was bare inches from hers. The rich scent of his woodsmoke cologne and pure, unadulterated dominance enveloped her instantly. His midnight-dark eyes tracked the rapid movement of her lips, then traveled down to the frantic pulse beating at the base of her throat. "If I thought you did it, you wouldn't be sitting in my office, Zara," Damien murmured, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through her. "You're a lot of things—a waitress, an intruder, a headache—but you're not stupid enough to blow up a car you were supposed to ride in." "Then what is it?" she whispered, her breath hitching as he leaned even closer, his gaze growing heavy, almost possessive. "The problem is, I can't take my eyes off you," Damien whispered, his voice dropping an octave, thick with a sudden, dark fixation. "Every executive in that boardroom wants you gone, and someone in this city wants you dead. But looking at you right now, all I can think about is how easily I could break you. Or how easily you could break me." Zara's heart hammered violently against her ribs. He was supposed to hate her. He was supposed to want her out of his family's empire. Yet, the way he looked at her felt less like hatred and more like an dangerous, consuming obsession. He wasn't just monitoring a suspect; he was tracking his prey. "I'm not yours to break, Mr. King," Zara said, forcing a defensive edge into her tone as she stood up, creating space between them. Damien straightened up slowly, his lips curling into a dangerous, confident smirk. "We'll see about that, co-CEO. For the next six months, you belong in my world. Under my roof. In my sight. Every single second." The transition from mutual suspicion to absolute, consuming passion didn't happen overnight, but once the dam broke, it shattered completely. Four months into the contract, the mystery of the King family assassin remained a dark shadow over their lives, but the hatred between Zara and Damien had completely burned away, leaving behind a blazing, uncontrollable wildfire. Zara had proven herself a brilliant, ruthless force in the boardroom, earning the respect of the shareholders and, more importantly, the absolute devotion of the man who had once vowed to destroy her. Damien's obsession had only intensified. He no longer hid it. In every meeting, his dark eyes followed her movements; at every gala, his hand remained firmly anchored to the small of her back, claiming her in front of the entire elite world. He was completely, utterly consumed by her. And tonight, inside the master suite of the King Estate, the tension finally reached its absolute boiling point. The heavy rain was back, drumming violently against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the roaring Atlantic ocean. Zara stood in the center of the dimly lit room, her breath hitching as the door clicked shut and Damien stepped inside. He didn't say a word. He didn't need to. The raw, predatory hunger in his eyes told her everything. "Damien..." her voice was a breathy gasp as he crossed the room in three long strides, his large hands instantly coming up to frame her face. "I'm tired of waiting, Zara," Damien groaned, his composure fracturing entirely as he slammed his lips against hers. The kiss was fierce, possessive, and dripping with months of starved desire. Zara gasped into his mouth, her hands instantly wrapping around his neck, pulling him closer as she completely surrendered to the heat. Damien let out a low growl, his fingers tangling in her hair, pulling the pins free until her dark locks cascaded down her shoulders. He lifted her effortlessly, her legs wrapping around his waist as he carried her toward the massive king-sized bed. They tumbled onto the silk sheets in a tangle of limbs and breathless moans. Damien stripped off his bespoke jacket and shirt with frantic movements, his muscular, chiseled chest gleaming in the amber firelight. "You're mine," he growled against her skin, his lips trailing a path of fire down her jawline to the sensitive hollow of her throat. "Every part of you. Say it." "I'm yours," Zara cried out, her back arching as his hands slid up her silk gown, tearing the fabric out of the way to expose her bare skin to the cool air and his scorching touch. When he finally drove into her, filling her completely, Zara let out a sharp, breathless cry, her fingers digging deep into the muscles of his back. The rhythm was primal, intense, and utterly relentless. Every touch was an unspoken confession of his obsession; every gasp from her lips was an invitation for more. They moved together like two forces of nature, the storm outside mirroring the chaotic, beautiful madness breaking inside the room. Damien gripped her hips, guiding her movements as the speed increased, pushing them both closer and closer to the edge of sanity. Zara threw her head back, her vision blurring with tears of pure pleasure as the waves of her climax crashed through her. Damien let out a deep, guttural roar, holding her tightly against his chest as he followed her into the brilliant, blinding dark, filling her with his warmth. Hours later, the storm outside had slowed to a gentle drizzle. Zara lay with her head resting on Damien’s bare, heavily rising and falling chest, the silk sheet tangled around their damp bodies. His large hand was slowly tracing patterns along her bare spine, his touch remarkably gentle compared to the wild fury from before. She thought he was asleep, but when she shifted slightly, his grip tightened around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, fiercely possessive kiss to the top of her head. "You're not going back to your room tonight," Damien murmured, his voice thick with sleep and an unbreakable determination. "Or any other night." Zara smiled in the dark, closing her eyes as she listened to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. For the first time since entering the lion's den, she didn't feel like an intruder. She felt like she was exactly where she belonged. But as she drifted off to sleep, she didn't see the dark shadow moving quietly across the balcony outside her window, or the glint of a lens catching the moonlight, capturing the two co-CEOs wrapped in each other's arms. The enemy was still inside the house, and the game was about to get much deadlier.
