I'm not ready

Reagon stood across Sia and Jason, his jaw clenched and his eyes burned with anger. “I said who’s his father?” Sia stepped forward with Jason beside her. Her chin lifted. “It’s none of your business.” Reagon moved toward them, his voice low. “Hey, hey, hey. You kept it, right?” Sia turned to face him fully. Her eyes were steady, but hurt lived behind them. “He is my...” Reagon started, but Sia cut him off. “No. Why would I give birth to the child of my rejected mate?” Lily, put a hand on her stomach and watched, her expression unreadable. Just then another man appeared. Ryder. He wore a blue dotted shirt and black pants. His face was concerned. “What’s going on, Sia? You alright?” He put a hand on Jason’s shoulder. Jason looked up at Ryder, then pointed at Reagan. “Daddy, this big bad guy is bullying me and my mommy.” He called Ryder “Daddy.” Reagon’s eyes narrowed. He looked at Ryder, then back at Sia and Jason. “The famous Alpha Reagon. What’s this? Picking on women and children now?” Ryder said, standing between them. Reagon’s expression hardened. He looked at Sia one last time. “Sia, this isn’t over. We’ll meet again soon.” Sia didn’t reply. Ryder took Sia’s hand and Jason’s. “Let’s get out of here.” The three of them turned and walked away together. Reagon watched them go. His eyes darkened. He turned to the man beside him in a black suit. “Follow them.” Lily stayed behind him, one hand still on her stomach, watching as Sia, Jason, and Ryder disappeared down the path. Inside a warm bedroom, Sia sat in a chair. She wore a cream tank top and black pants. Her long dark hair fell loose. On the dresser in front of her, a mirror reflected the room — soft lamps, light curtains, flowers in a vase. The door opened. Ryder walked in. Dark blue dotted shirt, calm expression. He carried a white mug and set it down beside her. Sia looked up and gave a small smile. Her eyes softened. “Thank you, Ryder.” Ryder sat across from her. His eyes studied her carefully. “Jason’s dad, right?” He said it quietly, like he already knew the answer but needed to hear it. Sia’s smile faded. She looked down, then back at him. “He still surrounds you like a shadow.” Ryder’s jaw tightened. “It was just a mistake. We’re not gonna run into him again. If he bugs you again, I gotta know. Yeah?” Sia nodded slowly. “Yeah. Okay.” Ryder let out a breath. A faint smile touched his lips. “But you know Jason’s got my back now.” Sia’s eyes flickered with worry. “I’m worried that Reagon misunderstood our relationship.” Ryder reached out and took her hand. His grip was steady. “It’s okay, Sia.” His eyes warmed. “You have no idea how happy I was when Jason called me dad.” Sia pulled her hand back gently. Her expression turned pained. “I’m sorry, Ryder. You’ve done so much for me over these past five years. But I’m not ready to get into a new relationship.” Ryder’s face fell for a second. Then he nodded, understanding in his eyes. “It’s okay. I can wait for you.” Across town, in a dark office, Reagon sat at a desk. Burgundy blazer over a black shirt. His face was hard as he read a paper. Scott, in a grey suit, stood beside him. Scott spoke first. “Here’s what we found on Alpha Ryder. Oh, so he’s engaged?” Reagon didn’t look up. “Yes. And as for Luna Sia, we’re drawing blanks. She’s not your Luna anymore.” Scott clenched his fist. “Yeah, well, I guess she’s been looking after her for five years.” Reagon’s eyes lifted from the paper. Anger flickered there. “The bastard’s been hiding her well. And I wonder...” He stood, voice low and dangerous. “Bring out the car.” Scott stared. “Wait. You’re gonna go after her?” Reagon looked straight ahead, his jaw set. “I’m gonna make her pay her debt.” In the bedroom, Jason slept. Light brown hair spread on the pillow. He hugged a small teddy bear. Sia walked in, her expression softening. She brushed his hair back gently with her fingers. Her eyes were full of love. She leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. She straightened and walked out, closing the door behind her. In the other room she paused by a lamp, then moved toward the front door. She opened it, expecting Ryder. “Ryder, did you forget something?” The man standing there wasn’t Ryder. Reagan. Black shirt under a dark red blazer. His eyes were cold, scanning her. Sia froze. “Reagan.” Her voice was barely above a whisper. “What?” His mouth curved slightly, but it wasn’t a smile. “Were you expecting your dear Alpha Ryder?” Sia stepped back. “How did you know where I live?” Reagon stepped inside and shut the door. He looked around the small entryway. “Is this all he can afford for you?” “This is my home. Please leave.” Sia’s voice was steady, but her hands trembled. Reagon moved closer. “Why? Because you don’t want your son to hear us? Is that it?” A small voice came from down the hall. “Mommy?” Jason stood in the doorway in white pajamas, rubbing his eyes. “What is it, honey? Are you okay? I heard some noise.” Sia immediately softened. She turned toward him, keeping her voice calm. “It’s okay, sweetie. Go back to sleep.” Jason nodded and disappeared back into his room. Sia turned back to Reagan. Her eyes were hard now. “Why did you come here?” Reagon’s expression shifted. Something dark and possessive in his gaze. “What, can’t I visit my dear wife?”
