The Lamb

The Romano estate did not look like a home, it looked like a fortress disguised as a museum. Massive limestone walls loomed against the black Valorian sky, illuminated by sharp floodlights that turned the pouring rain into silver needles. Security guards in sleek tactical suits stood every ten paces along the gravel driveway, their hands resting loosely near their holstered weapons. Inside the grand dining room, the atmosphere was suffocatingly cold. A crystal chandelier hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting a sharp, unforgiving light over a long mahogany table set for five. Damiano Romano stood by the tall, arched windows, a glass of untouched sparkling water in his hand. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his posture rigid. To his left sat his father, Cesare, looking like a decaying king on a throne, his veiny hands tapping an impatient rhythm on the armrest. "They are late," Cesare remarked, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "The De Lucas are drowning, yet they still carry themselves with the arrogance." "They aren't late, Father," Damiano said smoothly, checking his platinum watch. "It is precisely eight o'clock." Before Cesare could reply, the heavy oak doors swung open. "Mr. and Mrs. De Luca," the butler announced. "And Miss Sophia De Luca." Damiano turned his head slowly. His gray eyes flat and unreadable like a winter sea, immediately began doing what he had been trained to do since childhood, scanning for threats. He saw Arturo De Luca first. The man looked physically shrunk by his debts, his shoulders hunched, his eyes darting anxiously around the room. Beside him, his wife, Beatrice, held her chin high, but a telltale muscle twitched in her jaw. They looked exactly like what they were, desperate parents offering up their greatest asset to buy their survival. Then, his eyes shifted to the woman between them. Sophia De Luca wore a forest-green silk dress that draped elegantly over her frame, contrasting beautifully with her dark brown hair. Her head was slightly bowed, her long eyelashes casting faint shadows over her cheeks. As she stepped forward, her fingers tightly clasped the small velvet evening clutch in her hands. She looked delicate, beautiful, and completely overwhelmed by the terrifying opulence of the Romano stronghold. Damiano felt a dull twinge of something rare in his chest, pity. She was an innocent civilian caught in the gears of a criminal empire. Another life disrupted by the Romano name. "Don Cesare. Damiano," Arturo said, his voice carrying a slight, nervous tremor as he extended a hand. Cesare barely offered two fingers in return. "Let us skip the pleasantries, Arturo," Cesare said, not bothering to stand. "We are here to cement an alliance, not swap stories. Sit." During the dinner, Sophia played her part flawlessly. She sat directly across from Damiano, her movements slow and deliberate. When the waiters served the immaculate French cuisine, she took small, polite bites, keeping her eyes mostly on her plate. Whenever Cesare’s booming voice laid out the brutal terms of the western bank expansion, she would flinch slightly, her shoulders tensing as she took a small sip of her wine to calm her nerves. Damiano watched her closely, but he saw no deception. He saw only a sheltered, high-society girl terrified of the modern-day monsters sitting at the table. "You're remarkably quiet, Miss De Luca," Damiano said, his deep baritone cutting through the drone of their fathers' business talk. Sophia paused, her fork hovering for a second before she carefully set it down. She lifted her green eyes to meet his. Up close, they were wide, clear, and shining with a fragile vulnerability. A soft, slightly trembling smile touched her lips. "I am simply listening, Mr. Romano," she said, her voice dropping into a velvety, hesitant tone. "I... I confess I am not very accustomed to conversations regarding ports and banking logistics. In my family, I am usually left to tend to the gardens or the arts." Arturo quickly interjected, patting his daughter's hand. "Sophia is a good girl, Damiano. Porterà pace a casa tua.” ( she’ll bring peace to your home) Cesare laughed, a harsh, dry sound. "Good. Poiché mio figlio è un uomo duro, non aveva spazio per una debolezza.”(Because my son is a hard man, he didn’t have room for a weakness). Sophia lowered her gaze again, a faint blush creeping up her neck, the perfect physical response of a humiliated, traditional daughter. Beneath the table, however, her knuckles were white. Her thumb pressed hard against the fabric of her evening clutch, right where a burner phone sat heavy and silent. Just an hour ago, in the back of the limousine, a single text had flashed across its screen from a hidden number: *The Devil is observant. Give him a fragile girl, and he will look right past you.* As the dinner drew to a close, Cesare and the senior De Lucas stood up to retreat to the private study to finalize the formal paperwork. "Damiano, show your fiancée the terrace," Cesare ordered, not looking back as he walked out with Arturo and Beatrice. The moment the older generation left, the tension in the dining room shifted. It became intimate, concentrated, and heavy. Damiano stood up and gestured toward the glass doors leading to the covered stone terrace. Sophia followed him, the silk of her dress whispering against the marble floor. Outside, the rain beat a heavy rhythm against the glass roof, and the wind howled through the courtyard. They stood side by side, staring out at the dark gardens. "You don't have to be afraid of me, Sophia," Damiano said bluntly, keeping his eyes on the darkness. His voice had lost its cold, interrogative edge, softening into something genuinely reassuring. Sophia turned her head slowly, looking up at his sharp profile. She let her bottom lip quiver just a fraction before she bit it, adjusting her posture to look smaller beneath his massive frame. "It is hard not to be, Mr. Romano. The papers call you the Devil. My parents speak of you in whispers. Forgive me if I feel like I am checking the bars of my own cage." Damiano turned to face her, looking down at her wide, innocent green eyes. He could smell her perfume, a subtle, clean scent of jasmine. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently catching her jaw. It was a dominant gesture, but he held her with surprising lightness, his thumb softly resting against the pulse point on her neck. Her heart was racing, a physical reaction she couldn't fake. He assumed it was terror. "The papers write fairy tales to sell copies," Damiano murmured, his gray eyes softening as he looked down at her. "You are safe in this house, Sophia. As long as you are my wife, no one in Valoria will ever harm you. Remember that." "Thank you, Damiano," she whispered, her voice a breathy exhale. She leaned into his touch slightly, the perfect picture of a woman seeking protection from her captor. Before he could say another word, the butler appeared at the door. "Miss De Luca, your parents are ready to depart." Damiano let his hand fall away. Sophia took a step back, offering a small, grateful nod. "Goodnight, Damiano. I look forward to our wedding." She turned and walked away, her steps hurried, as if eager to escape the intensity of the room. Damiano stayed on the terrace, watching her go. He looked down at his hand, still feeling the soft warmth of her skin. For the first time in years, the crushing guilt in his chest felt a little lighter. He would protect her from the ugliness of his world. She was too fragile for this life, and he would ensure she remained untouched by it. Meanwhile, inside the departing De Luca limousine, the fragile girl vanished. Sophia sat in the shadows of the back seat, completely ignoring her adoptive parents. She pulled the burner phone from her clutch. Her green eyes, once wide with fear, narrowed into slits of pure, lethal ice. Her breathing was perfectly steady, her posture cold and rigid. She typed a swift message to the ghost controlling her strings: *Il diavolo crede che io sia un agnello, la trappola è stata tesa.* (The Devil believes I am a lamb. The trap is set).
