Lamb in Danger

The storm reached its absolute peak at midnight. Rain didn't just beat against the high, reinforced arched windows of the master wing—it smashed against them like iron shot, vibrating through the stone walls of the Romano fortress. Inside the vast bedroom, the power had flickered twice before dying completely, plunging the suite into pitch-black shadow. Sophia stood motionless in the center of the room. The storm’s violent flash of lightning illuminated her face in stark, silver strokes. Gone was the wide-eyed, trembling convent girl who wept for her father. Her spine was a straight, unyielding steel rod. Her chin was lifted, her eyes narrowed into two chips of emerald glass as she listened to the muffled, chaotic noises echoing from the deep subterranean levels of the estate. *Marcello took the bait,* she thought, a cold, clinical satisfaction spreading through her chest. She had tipped off Marcello about Damiano’s secret plan to spirit Arturo away to Spain. She knew how Marcello’s mind worked, arrogant, paranoid, and fiercely loyal to Cesare’s brutal traditions. Marcello would view mercy as Damiano treason. Down in the basement, the Romanos were currently tearing themselves apart from the inside. *Which means,* Sophia calculated, her mind running through threat matrices like a military computer, the perimeter security is completely compromised. Leon’s tactical team is focused on the internal mutiny. The gates are unguarded. Right on cue, a distant, muffled *BOOM* rattled the glass in the window frames. It wasn't thunder. It was a localized breach charge detonate at the north security gate. The Costa family had seized the exact window of opportunity Sophia had engineered for them. In the dark, Sophia didn't flinch. Her face hardened into an expression of chilling, terrifying absolute neutrality. The fake mask of fragility was gone, discarded like an old silk dress. She reached down to the waistband of her trousers, pulling out her hidden analog burner phone. The blue screen illuminated the sharp, predatory lines of her jaw as she typed a final, brief command to Lorenzo: *Costa breach confirmed. The estate is dark. I am clearing my exit route. She flipped the phone open, snapped the circuit board between her thumb and forefinger with a dry *crack*, and dropped the pieces into the embers of the hearth. --- Outside her bedroom door, the sound of heavy boots approached fast. Sophia didn't run to hide. She moved toward the darkness near the heavy mahogany wardrobe, stepping so softly her bare feet made zero sound against the cold slate floor. She reached onto the vanity, her fingers closing around the cold, heavy silver handle of a styling blade—an old-fashioned, razor-sharp straight razor she had smuggled in her luggage. *Four men, her trained ears deduced from the cadence of the footsteps. Heavy gear. Tactical boots. Costa hitmen. The door lock was bypassed with a violent, metallic crunch as a shotgun blast blew the deadbolt straight out of the frame. The door swung open, framing four bulky silhouetted figures against the dim, emergency-red lighting of the hallway. They wore night-vision goggles and carried suppressed submachine guns, sweeping the pitch-black room with silent efficiency. "Clear the corners," the lead hitman whispered in a coarse dialect. "Cesare's dead, Damiano's pinned in the basement. Find the girl. Kill her first so the De Luca bank keys default to the Costa proxy." Target priority: Lead shooter first, Sophia’s inner voice dictated, totally devoid of human fear. Eliminate sightlines. Use their gear against them. In a fraction of a second, Sophia moved. She didn't scream. She didn't gasp. She stepped out of the shadow behind the lead man like a spirit woven from the dark. Before he could turn his weapon, her right hand shot up, locking around his throat, while her left hand drove the straight razor directly into the carotid artery beneath his tactical helmet. Blood sprayed across the wall in a hot, dark mist. The man let out a wet, gargling choke. Before his body could hit the floor, Sophia snatched the tactical flashlight attached to his vest, clicked it on directly into the eyes of the second hitman, and slammed the heavy bezel into his windpipe. The second man crumpled, gasping for air. The remaining two shooters panicked, raising their submachine guns to spray the room blind in the dark. "She's not in here! Something's in here—!" Sophia dropped low, sweeping her leg across the carpet to take out the legs of the third hitman. As he fell, she grabbed his rifle by the barrel, twisted it from his grip with mechanical leverage, and drove the butt of the stock violently into his jaw. The bone shattered with a horrific *crunch*. The fourth hitman backed away toward the open door, his night-vision goggles dislodged, his face pale with raw, primal terror. "What the hell are you—" Sophia stepped into the thin beam of light spilling from the hallway. Her dark hair was wild, her oversized sweater spattered with dark red droplets. The straight razor in her hand was dripping onto the slate floor. Her green eyes were wide, unblinking, and dead. She didn't give him time to comprehend the monster standing before him. In one smooth, fluid motion, she closed the distance, grabbed the back of his tactical vest, and rammed his head face-first into the solid oak doorframe. He dropped like a sack of stone. Silence descended back over the room, save for the rhythmic pitter-patter of blood dripping from the blade onto the rug. Total elapsed time: eleven seconds. Four heavily armed assassins neutralized. Sophia stood amidst the groaning, bleeding bodies, her chest rising and falling in smooth, controlled rhythmic beats. She lowered the blade. Then, her ears picked up a different sound. Heavy, frantic, uncoordinated footsteps sprinting up the marble staircase outside. Boots slick with blood. A man breathing heavily, raggedly, running toward her room as if his very soul depended on it. *Damiano. --- Re-calibration, her mind ordered instantly. Reset pulse. Reset posture. The predator must die; the victim must return. In less than three seconds, Sophia executed a terrifying transformation. She dropped the straight razor into the dark crevice beside the wardrobe. She deliberately kicked over a heavy wooden nightstand, sending glass vases shattering across the floor to create the illusion of a struggle. She dragged her fingers through her hair, making it look messy and frantic. She scrambled into the far corner of the room, curling her body into a tiny, defensive ball beside the dead lead hitman. She forced her lungs to hyperventilate. Her chest began to heave frantically. Her fingers began to tremble violently against her knees. She pressed her back against the cold wall, squeezing her eyes shut, letting tears force their way past her lashes. The door was kicked open with a terrifying thud. "SOPHIA!" Damiano burst into the room. He was a terrifying sight. His white shirt was torn at the shoulder and drenched in dark, drying blood—Marcello’s blood, or his own, it was impossible to tell. He held his heavy custom pistol in a white-knuckled grip, his jaw locked so tight the muscles in his neck strained like steel cables. He swept the room, expecting to find his bride executed. Instead, he saw four Costa assassins scattered across the dark floor, motionless or unconscious, and Sophia cowering in the corner, clutching her knees, weeping hysterically. Damiano dropped his weapon. It hit the floor with a dull clatter. "Sophia..." his voice broke completely, turning into a ragged, wrecked rasp. He fell to his knees in front of her, sliding across the blood-slicked slate. His heavy, calloused hands were trembling uncontrollably as he reached out for her, terrified that if he touched her, she would turn to ash. "Sophia... oh God, Sophia..." He pulled her violently into his arms, crushing her against his chest. His heart was hammering against his ribs like a wild beast trying to break free. He buried his face in her neck, breathing in the scent of her, shaking uncontrollably against her small frame. "I thought I lost you," Damiano choked out, his voice thick with uncharacteristic, terrified tears. His gray eyes flickered wildly across the room, staring at the dead hitmen in absolute, stunned disbelief. "How... how are you alive? What happened in here?" Sophia wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into the crook of his shoulder. She let her voice tremble violently, every word laced with cinematic, breathless panic. "I... I heard the glass break..." she whimpered, her hands clutching his torn shirt as if she were drowning. "The lights went out... men came in with guns... they... they started shooting in the dark!" "Shooting in the dark?" Damiano repeated, his voice hollow, his mind trying desperately to piece together the scene. "They... they shot each other?" "I don't know!" Sophia sobbed, her body heaving against his chest with calculated perfection. She let out a small, broken gasp, her quivering lower lip pressing against his collarbone. "I hid under the desk... they were screaming... they couldn't see anything! Damiano, please... get me out of here! Please don't leave me!" Damiano held her tighter, his hands cupping the back of her head, completely blinded by the overwhelming rush of relief flooding his veins. His logical, mathematical mind—the sharpest instrument in the Valorian underworld—was completely paralyzed by his possessive love for her. He didn't notice the precise, fatal angle of the throat wound on the lead hitman. He didn't notice that the room showed no bullet holes in the walls. All he saw was his fragile, innocent wife, saved by sheer, miraculous luck in the dark. "I've got you," Damiano growled into her hair, his voice returning to a dark, terrifying pitch of absolute resolve. His face hardened into a mask of pure, murderous intent. "I've got you, Sophia. Marcello is dead. The Costas are done. No one will ever touch you again." He stood up, scooping her effortlessly into his arms, carrying her like a child over the corpses of the men she had butchered. Against his chest, hidden from his view in the shadow of his neck, Sophia’s frantic weeping instantly stopped. Her green eyes opened wide in the dark. They didn't flicker. They didn't tremble. They were cold, clear, and utterly victorious. As Damiano carried his "saved" Queen down the ruined, blood-stained hallway of the Romano fortress, Sophia rested her chin on his bleeding shoulder, staring back at the dark bedroom. *The Costa family is broken, she thought calmly. The Romanos are leaderless and panicked. And the Don of Valoria is holding me like I am his salvation. A tiny, invisible smile touched the corner of her lips in the dark. ---
