Costa’s Attack

1031 Words
The world dissolved into fractured glass and deafening noise. The rhythmic thud of automatic weapon fire tore through the grand waltz, shredding the heavy velvet curtains and sending plaster raining down like snow. Screams erupted from the high-society crowd, a chaotic tide of panicked politicians and fleeing socialites abandoning all pretense of elegance. Before Sophia could consciously calculate the trajectory of the glass shards, a massive weight slammed into her. Damiano didn't hesitate. In a single, explosive movement, he wrapped his arms around her waist and threw his body over hers, driving them both to the polished marble floor. He shielded her completely under the shadow of his large frame as a hail of bullets chewed into the floorboards just inches away. "Stay down!" Damiano roared over the din, his voice vibrating directly against her chest. Sophia lay pinned beneath him, her cheek pressed against the cold stone. Every muscle in her body screamed at her to move, to roll out from under him, to sweep his legs, draw a weapon from the nearest fallen guard, and return fire with lethal precision. Her assassin training was a roaring engine in her ears, analyzing the cadence of the gunfire—*two shooters, caliber 9mm, advancing from the north terrace.* She could end this in thirty seconds. Instead, she forced herself to collapse into a soft, trembling heap. She let out a high, ragged sob, burying her face into the crook of Damiano’s neck, her hands gripping his tuxedo jacket with frantic, weak desperation. "Damiano! Damiano, what's happening?!" she cried out, her voice pitching perfectly into the register of a terrified civilian. "I’ve got you," he growled, his gray eyes burning with a terrifying, feral rage as he looked toward the shattered windows. Leon and three Romano enforcers were already returning fire from behind the overturned mahogany bar. The air grew thick with the acrid stench of cordite and copper. One of the Costa gunmen, clad in tactical gear, broke through the smoke of the terrace, his rifle raised, scanning the floor for high-value targets. He locked onto Damiano’s back. Sophia saw him first through a gap in the debris. Her vision narrowed. Her heart rate plummeted into the cold, calculated stillness of a predator. *Three yards. Weapon angle forty-five degrees. Exposed throat below the helmet.* Her hand instinctively broke away from Damiano’s lapel, her fingers flexing, ready to drive a shattered shard of mirror directly into the gunman's carotid artery. She was halfway through shifting her body weight to launch herself forward— *No.* The realization hit her like a physical blow. If she killed him like this, Damiano would know. The illusion would shatter. The mission would fail. She aborted the strike at the absolute last millisecond. Instead of launching an attack, she let out a piercing, hysterical shriek and flung herself sideways, intentionally dragging Damiano down with her as if she were simply losing her mind with fear. The movement pulled Damiano out of the direct line of fire. A split second later, a heavy crack echoed through the room as Leon put a bullet through the gunman’s forehead. The man crumpled to the floor, dead before he hit the ground. Damiano immediately turned back to Sophia, his face pale beneath the dust. He grabbed her by the shoulders, his grip tight enough to bruise. "Sophia! Are you hit? Look at me!" Sophia let her eyes roll slightly, her breathing coming in rapid, shallow gasps. She shook her head frantically, tears spilling over her eyelashes as she clutched his arms. "No... no, I don't think so. There’s so much blood... please, Damiano, get me out of here!" "Leon! Clear a path to the garage!" Damiano commanded, sweeping Sophia up into his arms as if she weighed nothing. He rose to his feet, keeping his body between her and the shattered windows as he strode through the devastation. Sophia buried her face against his chest, her hands trembling violently against his shirt. Beneath her terrified facade, her mind was coldly taking inventory. As Damiano carried her past the dead Costa gunman, she subtly glanced at the man’s tactical vest. There, tucked into a side pouch, was a small, bloody envelope. It was the planted note her uncle had arranged—the one that would frame her adoptive father, Arturo De Luca, as a Costa conspirator, forcing the Romanos to take her deeper into their stronghold for "protection." Damiano rushed her down the service stairs and into the concrete underground garage, where a fleet of armored SUVs stood waiting, their engines roaring to life. He slid her into the back seat of the central vehicle, immediately climbing in after her and slamming the heavy, ballistic-glass door shut. The SUV tore out of the garage, tires screaming against the concrete as they sped into the pouring Valorian rain. Inside the quiet sanctuary of the armored car, Damiano immediately pulled Sophia into his lap, wrapping his arms around her tightly. He rested his chin on the top of her head, his chest heaving as he tried to regulate his own breathing. "You’re safe," he whispered, his gravelly voice thick with a raw, fierce emotion that caught her completely off guard. "I swear to you, Sophia. You are safe. I won't let them touch you again." Sophia leaned into him, letting her body mimic the slow, trembling comedown of shock. She wrapped her arms around his neck, holding onto him as if he were her only anchor in a crumbling world. But as she stared over his shoulder into the dark, rainy night, her green eyes were wide, completely dry, and entirely devoid of fear. The shooting had gone precisely according to plan. Damiano’s protective instincts were locked onto her tighter than ever. He had bled for her tonight, shielded her with his own flesh, completely blinded by his need to protect a fragile lamb. A dark, victorious thrill settled deep in her chest, but beneath it, the phantom warmth of his embrace felt dangerously real. She closed her eyes, hardening her heart against the weight of his arms. The game was escalating, and the Devil was playing exactly the hand she had dealt him.
