Chapter 8

Julian Grey's office door closed softly behind me. For several seconds, I simply stood there. The polished walnut doors looked exactly the same as they had a moment ago, yet everything that had happened behind them felt impossible. You'll be working as my secretary. Your salary will be adjusted. Tripled. A chauffeur. Don't be late tomorrow. The conversation replayed itself in my mind, each sentence sounding just as impossible as it had the first time I'd heard it. How had I gone from an administrative assistant at a branch office to becoming the personal secretary of Aurelius Group's CEO? Nothing about it made sense. The strangest part was that I had never actually made a decision. The transfer. The apartment. The new position. Everything had been arranged before anyone asked what I wanted. It felt as though my life had changed direction without waiting for me to catch up. "Miss Vale." Adrian's voice pulled me back to reality. He was waiting a respectful distance away, his expression as composed as ever. "If you'll come with me." I nodded and followed him. The executive floor was just as impressive as I remembered. The atmosphere was different from the floors I had known at the branch office. Everything felt quieter, more controlled. Executives moved through the corridors with calm confidence, exchanging polite greetings as they passed one another. More than once, I noticed people acknowledging Adrian with quiet respect. Whatever his position was, it clearly carried importance. We stopped outside an office a short distance away. "This will be yours." Adrian opened the door. I stepped inside. The office was elegant without being excessive. A large desk occupied the center of the room, positioned to face the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. Built-in shelves lined one wall, already stocked with company manuals, reference files, and neatly organized binders. Two comfortable chairs sat opposite the desk for visitors, while a small seating area with a coffee table occupied the far corner. Everything looked immaculate. My gaze moved around the room, taking in the unfamiliar space. This was really my office. The thought felt strange. Yesterday, I had been delivering files to executives. Now, I had an office on the executive floor. My attention shifted to another door near the back of the room. "What does that lead to?" Adrian walked over and opened it. Beyond it, I caught a glimpse of Julian Grey's office. He closed the door again. I stared. "There's a connecting door?" "Yes." "You'll use it whenever Mr. Grey requests you." I looked back at the closed door. The realization settled over me slowly. My office wasn't just near his. It was directly connected to his. "I... wasn't expecting that." "Most people wouldn't." His answer was calm and matter-of-fact. Before I could think of another question, there was a light knock on the open office door. A tall blonde woman stepped inside carrying a tablet and a slim leather folder. She looked to be in her late twenties, with long blonde hair, striking blue eyes, and an elegant beauty that seemed perfectly suited to the executive floor. She smiled warmly. "Good morning, Miss Vale. I'm Rebecca." "It's nice to meet you." "You as well." She placed the folder neatly on my desk. "I'll be helping you complete the administrative requirements for your new position." Rebecca opened the folder and arranged the documents neatly in front of me. "Most of the paperwork has already been prepared," she explained. "We only need your signatures on a few forms." I glanced through them. An updated employment contract. A confidentiality agreement. A revised benefits package. A salary adjustment. Everything was already organized. Even my new job title was printed clearly on one of the documents. Executive Secretary to the Chief Executive Officer. Seeing the words written there made everything feel more real than when Mr. Grey had said them. Rebecca pointed to the first page. "Please sign here." I picked up the pen and signed where she indicated. The process didn't take long. Once I finished, she collected the documents and placed them back into the folder. "Thank you." She then handed me a sleek black access card. "This is your new access card. It has been updated with your new clearance level." I turned it over in my hand. A simple card. Yet it represented an entirely different part of Aurelius Group. Rebecca placed a company phone beside it. "This has already been configured with your work contacts, company applications, and Mr. Grey's schedule." I looked at the phone. His schedule. The thought still felt strange. A few minutes ago, I had barely known anything about the CEO. Now I was expected to manage his day. Rebecca handed me a leather planner next. "This contains your work schedule, company directory, and other important information you'll need." Finally, she placed a small envelope on the desk. "And these are the keys to your office." "Thank you." I accepted them and placed everything neatly beside the access card. "There are also security clearances attached to your access card," Rebecca continued. "You'll have access to the executive floors as part of your position." Executive floors. Back at the branch office, I had only gone to the executive floor when Mr. Lawson needed me to deliver a file. I never imagined that I would one day work here. Not as a visitor. But as part of it. The thought still felt unreal. Rebecca closed the folder. "That concludes the administrative process." I looked up. "That's it?" She smiled. "Yes, Miss Vale." For some reason, I expected there to be more. More forms. More explanations. Instead, everything moved with the same efficiency as everything else at Headquarters. As though the decision had already been made and all that remained was for me to step into it. Rebecca excused herself after a few more instructions, leaving Adrian and me alone once again. "Is there anything else you need from me?" I asked. "No." His answer was calm as always. "You've been given the rest of today to settle in. Your official duties begin tomorrow morning." I nodded. So I really wasn't expected to work today. After everything that had happened, I wasn't going to argue. Adrian walked with me toward the executive elevator. "If you need anything, my office is at the end of the corridor." "Thank you... for everything." "It was my pleasure, Miss Vale." For the first time since we'd met, his expression softened slightly. Then the familiar composure returned. The elevator doors opened. I stepped inside. As they closed, I caught one last glimpse of the executive floor. The polished corridors. The quiet confidence of the people working there. The place still felt unfamiliar. But tomorrow, I would return as someone who belonged there. At least, that was what I was supposed to believe. The elevator carried me back to the lobby. Outside, the company car was already waiting. The driver greeted me politely before opening the door. The ride back to my apartment passed quickly. I spent most of it looking out of the window, trying to process everything that had happened. A new position. A new workplace. A life that looked completely different from the one I had woken up to yesterday. And somehow, I had never felt less in control of my own life. By the time I reached my apartment, I still felt like I was waiting to wake up.
