“Kate, are you playing games with me?” Justin’s voice was steady, his brows furrowed as he stared at her intensely.
Kate bit her lips slightly. She stared closely at the man before her. This was the man who had tried desperately to save her. Justin Vince, the head of one of the four great families of Sydney, Australia.
The third son of the Vince family. Well-built and the most handsome man in the city, second to none. In her past life, Nathan seemed to have never been able to beat him.
He leaned forward slightly, his eyes narrowing as he searched her face for an answer. “Is this some sort of joke, Kate? I didn't come here to waste my time, you know, right?"
“No, I'm not joking, “ She paused, her voice soft and steady." I didn't call you here to waste your time. I am interested in getting married to you and I hope you do not refuse me, Mr Vince."
There was a stunned silence that followed her words. Her best friend Chloe Bennett, who was sitting beside her, couldn't contain herself. Her voice rang out in disapproval. “Kate, is something wrong with you?!” She exclaimed, her face filled with shock and confusion." Have you gone nuts?!"
“Do you know who Justin Vince is?!” She continued, her statement coming out as a rush. “He's a playboy! "He changes women with the same speed at which he changes his cars, and you're saying you want to get married to him?”
Kate glanced at Justin, who had a slight smirk on his face.
His lips curled up slightly, obviously enjoying the attention he was being given. “I thought you were getting married to Nathan soon.” He clasped his hands together, his expression unreadable. "So what's with this sudden question, Miss Obsidian? Does your fiancé have any idea about what's going on in your mind?"
Kate smiled lightly, unfazed by his statement. “Care to come steal a bride on the 18th?”
There was a brief silence after her words.
“I don't think you understand what you're saying, Kate,” Chloe said, her eyes wide open in disbelief, breaking the silence that enveloped them. “You’re literally betraying Nathan here. He loves you very much! How can you throw away such a bright future to end up with,” She paused, glancing at Justin with much disgust. “A tyrant!”
Kate glanced at Chloe, her expression softening. She never knew what she had gone through in her past life and right now, she knew she was only looking out for her.
“I know what I'm doing, Chloe,” She replied. “And I know I am not making a mistake. If I were to marry Nathan, I will regret it for the rest of my life.”
“But even if you no longer want to be with Nathan anymore, it shouldn't be… him!” Chloe said. “Think again, Kate.”
Kate let out a small, frustrated sigh. “You don't get it! You think I'm making a mistake, but I'm not and this is my choice to make, Chloe. I can't throw my life away for someone who doesn't deserve it.”
Chloe's lips parted slightly in a bid to protest, but Justin interrupted. “She's right. It's her choice to make. Don't but in.”
Chloe glared at him, wondering what gave him the right to interrupt her. She wanted to protest, but Kate held her back. She looked at her and pursed her lips. Kate didn't want her to interfere anymore.
Kate glanced at Justin, regaining her composure. “My wedding is just around the corner, dare to come?” She said each word clearly.
It took Justin a few seconds to finally respond.
“Miss Obsidian, I think you'll need to have your brain checked. It's not normal for a woman to be seeking out another man just a few days to her wedding,” he replied, standing up, his face devoid of emotion. “I'll be leaving now.”
Kate's face turned into a small frown as she watched him leave without turning back. Beside her, Chloe began to whine.
"What are you thinking, Kate?!" She shouted, making the other patrons glance towards their table. "You're running to another man, now look how he turned you down! If you don't want to be with Nathan, fine, but why are you playing games with someone else? It's only going to hurt everyone.”
Seeing that Kate didn't respond but drank her coffee obliviously, Chloe spoke up again.
“Did the caffeine get into your head?!”
“Of course not,” Kate replied. “I'm clear-headed. I know what I'm doing.”
“You're clear-headed? You're literally about to break Nathan's heart! Do you even know what you're doing? You're throwing everything away for him. For Justin Vince! You're going to cheat on Nathan!” Chloe couldn't imagine what her best friend would think of doing this.
Kate chuckled slightly at her statement.
Cheat on Nathan?
She had witnessed Nathan and another woman entwined on the bed right in front of her, but she still forgave him because he had claimed that she had drugged him.
Chloe raised an inquisitive brow. “What's so funny about what I said?”
“Chloe, whatever happens now, Nathan deserves everything! He's a beast! And I'm done.”
Chloe stared at her best friend for a long time. She felt like her best friend had suddenly become cold-blooded and heartless overnight. Even her aura had changed into something that frightened her deeply.
Everyone in Sydney knew Kate to be virtuous, rational and disciplined. She never had any relationships with any man. All she ever wanted was to become a dutiful wife to Nathan. Now, what changed her?
As Chloe was contemplating this, Kate's phone pinged with a notification.
Her face brightened up on seeing the text message. It seems her plan worked after all.
