At midnight, Kate was woken up by the deafening sound of her ringtone. With a grumpy gesture, she squinted, her eyes staring at the caller's ID.
Her face instantly turned sour and filled with disgust. She struggled to control herself as she reluctantly answered in a suppressed voice. “Nathan.”
“Did I wake you up?” Came the warm voice of Nathan from the other end.
“Yeah,” she replied curtly.
“Oh, I'm sorry. I have just finished with some work and decided to give you a call. I've missed you and I just couldn't sleep without hearing your sweet voice.”
Kate couldn't help but give out a sarcastic laugh. In her past life, Nathan had always called her at midnight to say sweet nothing to her, and she had always thought that she was so lucky to have such a doting man in her life.
Meanwhile, it was just a facade. Nathan was only pretending to love her to get close to her, and she was certain that the work he spoke about was his mistress. Now, she has been reborn, and she won't let herself be swayed anymore by him.
“Kate?” Not getting any response from her, his voice became warmer.
“Sorry, I'm just sleepy and a little tired. I had a long day,” she replied, faking a yawn.
“Okay. There will be an annual gala tonight. Would you like me to get anything for you as a pre-wedding present?”
“No. Can we talk later in the day, Nathan? I'm exhausted.”
“Sure. Bye.”
Kate wasted no time in ending the call. She felt sick just talking to him. Her mind went to the auction. Perhaps she should also attend. After all, most of the dignitaries in Sydney will be in attendance.
…
The next morning, Kate made a phone call to Chloe.
“Hey Kate, I was just about to call you. There's a charity gala tonight, will you be attending?” Chloe had forgotten to ask her about it yesterday and seemed to have remembered.
Kate paused for a while before responding. Nathan would also be attending the gala, but he had never thought it wise to bring her along to events like this.
In her previous life, she had always thought that Nathan was perfect to her and didn't want her to be misled by the outside world, but it turns out that he never wanted her to socialize so that when she had nothing left, she wouldn't have anywhere to turn to. He had also made her cut off contact with Chloe.
“Yes. I'm going. Let's go pick out some dresses,” Kate replied.
“Are you serious?” Chloe chimed. “I didn't hear wrong, right?”
Chloe couldn't believe this. No matter how hard she had tried to persuade Kate into going to events like this with her, she had always turned her down.
“See you soon,” Kate replied with a chuckle and ended the call.
Hearing his daughter's words, Harry also couldn't hide his surprise. “Kate, are you really going to the charity gala tonight? That's a first, I thought you never liked going to social events.”
Kate sighed deeply. She felt like she also had a fault in what had happened to them all in her past life. She had put all her energy into one man and had neglected her family totally, which contributed partially to their downfall.
“Dad, from now on, I will protect the interests of our family no matter what. I will also help you manage the company as well. I will make the Obsidians as glorious as before, so no one will be able to snatch what we have worked tirelessly for,” Kate said with determination in her eyes. She meant every word she had uttered and it was a promise.
Harry looked at his daughter with new eyes. In the past, Kate never had such ambitions. She had always shied away from things pertaining to the company.
He had also thought about giving the company to her to manage before and had proposed it to her, but she brushed it aside, saying she wasn't ready and, since her heart was with Nathan, when the two families came together, he was sure that the company would be brought to greater heights when managed by them both.
But, it would be much better if it were managed by his own daughter rather than Nathan. Harry was extremely delighted and his eyes shone with emotion. “Kate, you've made me proud with your words. And I'll do whatever it takes to support you with this new decision you have made.”
The corners of Kate's lips curved up into a smile.
In this life, she must firmly grasp the Obsidian's company in her own hands, and she'll never be stupid to hand it over to Nathan again!
…
Kate's phone rang incessantly inside her pockets. She took it out and it was an unknown number.
"Hello, who is this?"
"Hello Soon to be Nathan's wife," came the chilling reply which stunned Kate.
It was Vera. She's back?
