Chapter Three

Sophia's POV “You made it clear to me that you took care of Aden Pharmaceuticals and that there would be no trouble at all from that end. What changed?” Mr. Valdez asked me. He was my father, but I would always call him by his surname and put a sir when replying to him. There was no such closeness between us that warranted ‘dad’ or ‘father’ from me, unlike his relationship with his dear Vanessa. “There was an assurance from their end after ee reached an understanding. Their law file was unexpected.” “What do you think you need to adequately run this business, Sophia?” He asked, adjusting on his seat like he was uncomfortable. “Skills...?” I responded with a pause of uncertainty. I did not have the right answer, because frankly no answer I give him wad going to suit him. He was still going to find something different to say. “Skills, Sophia? You really think skills will get you the position of the don someday? I run this business with smartness. Having mere skills will get you no where. You need to be smart, and quick in taking action.” He tabled out with a firm tone. “I am disappointed that Aden Pharmaceuticals even had the guts to file a suit against us. That clearly shows that you did not put them in their right place, because coming to an understanding should not be based on talk alone.” He clarified. I only nodded in response, having no words to give to him in reply. “Visit them and have them fully repaid in kind manner, for their considerations and kindness.” That was all he had to say. He stood up and walked out of the study, leaving me seated in my own thoughts. If I had the chance, I would gladly have his head and his pretty little daughter's on a meal platter for breakfast. The unnerving manner in which he treats me makes me hate him even more than I already do. And his Vanessa does not help matters, imagine bursting in to as for 6000 dollars without lifting a finger to do anything in her whole life. She claimed Diego needed it, so I could just consider that as the reason for her actions but a part of me knew she had lied. She had only used Diego's name to ask for the money, and it gladdened my heart to hear Mr Valdez coldly turn down her request. My phone rang out in my bag. I pulled it out and accepted the call, plugging in my ear pods. “How is the state of things, Reynolds?” I asked over the receiver. “Positive, ma'am. All preparations made have been going smoothly, and if all goes well, by next three months, you get seventy percent of the company.” He responded. “Seventy percent? Is that really all you can do, Reynolds? Seventy percent? I don't pay you to give me seventy percent, I pay you to get a hundred percent. It is that or nothing else.” I corrected. “I understand. But you still need to consider...” “I have put in too much for this to go wrong, and I have put in too much to settle with seventy percent. A hundred percent or nothing, do I make myself clear?” “Understood.” He responded after a short pause. “Good. Get back to work then.” I disconnected the call and slammed the ear pods back into its case in anger. My fingers curling in rage as my thoughts were tossed back and forth. Why would I even consider a seventy percent? After all I have done, all I have been through trying to make a name for myself. So many years of work that is barely even evident. I would never accept just seventy percent, more has to come for my hardwork. I stood up and walked out of the room, getting into my car and driving out of the house. Vanessa's POV “Where did you get this much amount of money from, Vanessa?” “Why do you bother with such unnecessary questions? The most important thing right now is that we have gotten the money for the surgery. Let us just be hopeful that the result is nice.” “You still haven't answered me. Where... Who gave you the money?” Diego pressured me again. I knew I had to tell him something to get him to stop asking questions, but I was not ready to start explaining how I mysteriously saw a cheque of 7000 dollars in front of my room. He would not believe me anyways. “My dad helped.” I simply replied. “Thats a gracious lie.” He retorted. “Just let it go. We have paid for the surgery, let us just be in hope that the results are good.” I said to him with a stern tone to get him to drop it
