NADINE
“You can't do that! I'm your life, Nadine. I doubt you can survive without me!’ He yelled viciously.
I smirked at him. “Mr Connor I'll get back to you concerning the details,”I spoke into the phone and disconnected the call.
Hendrix had given the divorce lawyer’s contact earlier today. I had intended to call him but got busy with everything. Somehow I'm thankful I didn't call him earlier. The look on Dean’s face right now was epic.
“You’re speaking like you're the one who can't do without me,” I smiled.
“You won't divorce me, Nadine. You dare not!” He yelled, moving even closer to me.
My lips pulled up in a mocking smile.
“Who are you to tell me what to do ex-husband?”I drawled and his nose flared in anger.
“Oh, I see you've grown some wings now that you've become the w***e of Hendrix, you think you're a boss?” He scoffed.
“After humiliating me at the party, you still humiliate me in the office?” He asked in disbelief.
“You are the one who started this whole conflict, if only you hadn't walked in here.”
“If only you didn't deny me at the party, you know what? Just leave” I roared as I gestured to the door.
“Oh, so you're doing all this to take revenge on me?” He asked as he closed the distance between us.
“I f*****g asked you to leave,” I yelled again pushing him back. I rushed to the telephone on the table as I punched in the numbers on it. There had been a manual attached to the desk earlier and punching five on the telephone was to call for security.
I wasted no time and dialed it. “Hello, please come to my office and get rid of an intruder,” I stated confidently.
Dean's eyes widened as he pointed his finger at me and shook it viciously.
“So you're calling the security to throw me out?. Do you think they'll listen to you? I'm your damned husband, woman!” He roared.
“Ex-husband,” I was quick to correct him.
“You think because you have this position you are now the ruler of this place?" he taunted and just then two burly men dressed in security outfits walked in. I smirked and crossed my arms.
I walked towards Dean slowly, maintaining eye contact, then inched closer to his ear. I hated that I had to move this close to him but I wanted him to get every word I said into his thick skull.
“As a matter of fact, yes,” I whispered. He paled visibly, he wasn’t expecting that from me.
I smirked seeing the immediate effect as I put distance between us once more and turned to face the security men who stood at attention.
“Throw him out,” I firmly stated and Dean flinched.
“You wouldn't do that, do you know who I am? I am the CEO's secretary. I am…” His next words were cut off when the men grabbed him by the shoulder and hurled him out.
He thrashed and cursed but he was no match for them. I watched him leave and relief washed over me. Something sprang up within me. Something new. Something I had never experienced.
I suddenly realized what it was. ‘Power!’ This was the feeling of power and I was never letting go.
I walked to my chair and sat down confidently. The divorce plan was already on but I knew it wasn't the end of my problems. I sighed and glanced at the manual that saved my life earlier.
On it were other numbers, my eyes zeroed on number one. It connected you automatically to the CEO.
I immediately wasted no time and pressed on it. It connected. “Hello” I squeaked out. “Yes, Nadine,” His cool calm voice resonated over the line as if he was expecting me to call.
“How did you know it was me?” I asked, surprised.
“You're the only one that has direct access to me," he replied.
I mouthed an ‘oh’ sound but quickly slapped my head when I realized he couldn't see that. I decided to go straight to the point.
“I wouldn't have used the official line for something personal like this but I don't have your number so…My number is saved on your phone. I did that before handing it to you,” he said with a chuckle.
I didn't know he did that, I hadn't even had time to go through my phone.
“So what do you need?”, he asked, drawing me from my thoughts.
“I'm worried,” I stated truthfully as I bit my bottom lip.
“Rumors might begin to spread around, that's if they haven't already. They might say I seduced you to get this position.”
“That's not a problem,” he assured me.
“The people spreading the rumor should try seducing me too,” he shrugged.
“I'm being serious,” I complained, worry lacing my voice.
“This is beneficial to us. If you think you're humiliated then Dean is more humiliated. Don't think too much about it.”
I heaved a breath of relief. I guess he was right, we could use this to our advantage. Just as I was about to end the call I heard noises on the other side, before I could ask him what was wrong I heard Dean's angry voice.
“Stay away from my wife,” he yelled and I froze.
“What was this man's problem?” I thought angrily.
“Wasn't the humiliation I gave him a while ago enough?”
Just as I was about to head over to Hendrix's office his next words stopped me.
“Well you can't say she's your wife now when you denied her, right?” Hendrix drawled lazily. The man was always so composed and I was in awe.
“The woman belongs to me now, I can't wait for your divorce to be finalized so I can finally claim her as mine,” he revealed and my heart skipped a bit. I suddenly forgot how to breathe.
I knew he was just saying it all to make Dean jealous but no one had ever spoken about me that way. I was touched.
“I suggest you leave my office now or you might not like the consequences that follow after,” Hendrix threatened and I knew it wasn't an empty one. I had seen how ruthless this man was at the meeting today. If Dean had any sense left in him, he would leave the room.
“This isn't over,” Dean warned. “I'll still have my own pound of flesh," he stated and I heard the door slam.
“I'm sorry about that,” Hendrix said as he resumed our conversation.
“It's okay, I'm sorry about Dean, I apologize for any inconvenience he has caused," I said sincerely.
Hendrix chuckled.
“Never apologize for that asshole. Like I said, don't let anyone intimidate you. I'll drive you back after work, wait for me,” he said and ended the call before I could form a reply. I sighed and shook my head as I began to read some files.
Soon work hours were over and I sighed in contentment at what I was able to do. It wasn't the best but I was slowly progressing.
I checked the time and gasped. I had only ten minutes to get to the parking lot. I packed my things in a rush and left the office.
I got to the parking lot and right there in the middle projected by the lighting of the parking lot was Hendrix.
He leaned against the car with his head tilted up showing his defined chin and pointed nose. His eyes were closed. I shook my head and walked towards him.
“I'm sorry I'm late,” I said sheepishly, gazing down at my feet.
“It's okay, let's go.”
He opened the door and got in while I did the same and he drove away from the parking lot.
Soon, we arrived at the hotel we were staying at. Hendrix got off the car and pulled the door open for me.
“Thank you for the ride,” I said gratefully, stepping down from the vehicle. He nodded.
“We'll see tomorrow, Nadine.” his eyes held mine. I felt compelled by those blue orbs. Before I could realize it, I gave out an answer.
“Sure.”
He glanced at me one more time, rolled the glass and sped off. I looked at his retreating form as various thoughts ran through my mind.
A new chapter of my life had begun and I was still getting used to the change.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't realize someone had sprung up from behind me.
The person tackled me from behind and held my hands behind my back, restraining me.
“Think you can run away from me, huh you upcoming community w***e?” He muttered in my ear and I stilled in shock.
It was Dean but how did he find me?
