Four and Three Quarter Years
Henry plopped onto the sofa and stared out at the lake. The water was smooth and still, as if all was right with the world. Or perhaps it was out of respect for their sorrow. He heard children playing in the distance, oblivious to the gloom hovering so near.
Water flowed melodiously in the pipes as the toilet flushed in their freshly remodeled bathroom. The last of the renovations he and Sam had originally planned for their home was now complete. They’d celebrated, thinking everything was perfect now. The world was their oyster. They loved their jobs, they loved their home, and they adored each other. What could ever go wrong to spoil that?
