Chapter 2

I stared at him in complete disbelief, my entire body drowning under a wave of crippling absurdity and soul-crushing despair. "Ethan, you have no right to sign that letter of understanding for me!" Ethan's face darkened with rage. "I'm your husband. Why shouldn't I have the right?" I couldn't stand to look at his revolting face for one more second, so I spun around and marched straight toward the officers. "I'm the biological older sister of the cruise ship's owner. I do not forgive the person who did this. Please recover the black box as soon as possible and find out who these victims are!" The officers had already watched the whole ugly drama unfold, and they agreed to my request without pushback. "Once we finish pulling the yacht from the water, we'll analyze the black-box data right away. I'll put in a request to let you observe the process when we do." "Thank you so much!" A sudden thought popped into my head, so I ducked away from Ethan and shot a text to my brother. Nora: Lillian crashed your yacht and sank it. The people on board went down with it. Get into the cloud right now and pull the yacht's security footage. Text me the second you find anything, no matter what it is. No sooner had I turned off my phone than the bodies were pulled up onto the shore. Two sets of remains lay side by side on the sand, their bodies crisscrossed with gaping bite marks from sharks. Calling them full bodies wasn't even accurate. Barely anything was left of them at all. The sharks had already torn off and devoured every limb, and nearly all the flesh was gone from their bones. My stomach twisted violently, but I forced myself to push past the nausea and step closer. "Rest easy. I will make the people who hurt you pay for what they've done, I swear it." Right then, my phone buzzed with a reply from my brother. Rowan: What the hell! Someone stole my yacht and now it's sunk? Everyone on board is dead? That son of a b***h must be behind this again! Rowan: Does my brother-in-law know? What's he saying? Please tell me he didn't lose it and strangle Lillian already, yeah? I was completely baffled, and before I could even type back a reply, a soft, simpering voice drifted over my shoulder. "Ethan, I'm so scared... I can't bear to look." Ethan wrapped a half-embrace around her, his voice dripping with saccharine concern. "These two bodies are really horrifying. Just do as I say, go wait outside and rest, okay?" Lillian turned him down. She pulled out of his arms, sauntered to stand a step away from the remains, and gave a lazy, unconcerned bow. "I'm so sorry..." When she straightened back up, she curled her lips into a cold little smirk and muttered, "But hey... what can you expect when you raise such a useless daughter? She couldn't even keep her own man's heart, and her husband just stood by and watched you die. Now you don't even have a whole body to bury!" Those words hit me like a lit match to a powder keg, and my rage exploded out of control. I locked my furious glare on her, grabbed her by the neck, and shoved her down hard. "If you have even a shred of humanity left in you, you'll get on your knees and apologize! No murderer gets to stand tall in front of their victims." Lillian's face instantly puffed up from the pressure, and she scurried backward, sobbing hysterically. "Nora! I only came here to pay my respects to the dead! Why are you hitting me? Ethan! Help me! She's trying to kill me!" Suddenly, my head snapped to the side, and the coppery tang of blood flooded my mouth. I turned slowly to face Ethan, his hand still raised from the blow. Dark, roiling emotions surged behind my eyes. Ethan's chest heaved violently as he snarled, "What right do you have to lay a hand on Lillian? They're already dead. The rest of us still have to live our lives. Don't push your luck too far! "Lillian has already come here to apologize and to show them respect. Your mom and brother are dead. Stop making so many demands." "These aren't my mother and brother!" I screamed and glared daggers at Lillian, my whole body blazing with rage. "You two killed them, and you still dare to talk like that? Are you even human?" Panicked that I would lose my mind and hurt Lillian, Ethan stopped caring what came out of his mouth. "Lillian didn't do anything wrong! Your mom and brother died in an accident, and I'm going to sign that letter of understanding for you, whether you agree to it or not." I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth, and the last tiny spark of hope I'd held for Ethan sputtered out completely. Looking at the man standing in front of me, I felt a storm of disgust churn in my gut. I couldn't stand to look at him for even one more second. "Ethan Foster. Let's get divorced." It took Ethan two full seconds to process what I'd said. A flash of guilt and reluctance crossed his face, but he snapped, "I refuse! You're cruel and vindictive. God knows what you'll do to hurt Lillian once we're divorced. I'm never giving you that chance!" With that, he bent down, swept Lillian into his arms, and stormed off, leaving me standing completely alone on the sand. My legs gave out suddenly, and I sank to a crouch. Great, heaving sobs tore out of me, and hot tears poured down my face like rain.
