Denys He cursed the day that he had been made Alpha. He wanted to be at home, with his lover. Instead he had to deal with minor issues with the pack. He didn’t see why this couldn’t have been dealt with in the morning. He cast a look back at the house before he shifted and raced to one of the outlying farms. The call had come in as he was finishing for the day, as all important calls do. He saw the issue as soon as he reached the farm. It was one of the wheat farms, and the field was on fire. Blue flashes filled the sky as he hastily shifted back to human and ran the rest of the way. There was a family that lived there that he rather liked. He had once enev thought that the daughter, Kate, was the one that would become his. Obviously that had changed. She went to college and fell into a bad crowd there. He had found Melody. Her parents still liked him though, and often he entered his office to find fresh produce in a basket there. He didn’t bother with knocking, instead entering the farm house. Almost immediately he had Kate’s mother throw her arms around him, bawling. He looked to her husband. “Kate is out there.” He said. Well. s**t.   Melody Denys didn’t come home. He had messaged her telling her that there was a problem but that had been several hours ago. She was curled up on the sofa, her hot chocolate abandoned on the table. What was taking him so long? She had cooked dinner but it was now cold in the oven. Her feeling of unease grew, and she pushed herself up. Forcing herself to move before she fell asleep. She moved to the window. Nearly every single house’s window was dark. It was nearly midnight, somewhere an owl hooted. Melody shivered even though the house was warm. She wanted to go and find Denys, and check if he was alright. She glanced at her phone, next to the cold mug. She picked it up and sent him a message. From what he had said the call was important, she didn’t want to distract him too much.   Denys He opened his eyes. Everything hurt, like he had been out in the sun for three days straight. The hand holding his felt wrong. It was bigger. His heckles stood up. It wasn’t right. “Whoa there.” A familiar voice said. Denys frowned. It wasn’t Melody. He glanced over to see the green eyes of his former lover. It was Kate. She was thinner then she had been, her eyes were shrunk. “Hey love. Its alright. You are in the hospital.” Denys let her hand go. He didn’t want her near him. “You don’t remember do you? You ran into the fire for me.” “Where is Melody?” He croaked out. His throat hurt. “Melody? That that little Cat that you have holed up in your house? What is with that?” “Where is she Kate?” He said, feeling himself getting angry with her. “Oh she is here. Somewhere. I guess.” Kate shrugged. “I never thought you would go for someone so… broken…” Denys growled and took Kate by the throat, slamming her against the wall. She laughed. She f*****g laughed. He threw her away from him in disgust. He barely went three stes before he felt himself get weaker. He glanced back and saw that Kate had fiddled with his medication. “You… b***h…” He slurred, trying to pull the line out. He passed out as he managed.   Melody The call had come from Denys’ phone. All she was told was that there had been an accident and that Denys had been caught in a fire. She had rushed to where she was told, a hospital out of the territory. She didn’t like it. It was too clinical, and she could barely even smell his scent. Some woman had greeted her at the door, and taken her up to see him. But she had been told to leave, and then the woman had actually touched her, pushing her away from him. She had said that he didn’t want to see her. So she sat downstairs in the small café, and sat, and sat. No word came down. She pulled apart a croissant. The flakes spread everywhere. For the hundredth time when the lift doors opened she looked over. The woman had come down a while ago and said that he had woken but that he didn’t want to talk to her. So Melody stayed.   Denys It was dark when he woke again. Kate was still there, he could smell her. Once he had loved her. She was going to be the one. The one before he found Melody, now he felt nothing but contempt for her. She was asleep in the chair. He saw his opportunity and he took it, ripping the tubes out. He could smell Melody faintly, she was here and he needed to find her. Without her, he wasn’t whole. The hospital was a maze. He hated it. He managed to find his way to where he could smell Melody the strongest, and found his little cat curled up on one of the reception benches. He felt a rush of love for her and strode over. She didn’t wake until he pulled her into his arms, ignoring the feel of the burns. He was a wolf. He healed quickly. What mattered was Melody. She seemed confused for a moment, then she gave a truly brilliant smile and threw her arms around his neck. Denys breathed in her scent. He was never going to scare her like that again
