Becca shifted uncomfortably in the soft theater chair and fanned herself with a program. “This place is so nice,” Aurora said. “Your brother is missing out.” The black box theater was cozy, and smaller than Becca thought. She had expected a Vaudeville theater, but this place was more like a college scene with a low budget. The stage was lit with an orange scrim that reminded her of sunset. Two stacks of boxes were strategically placed on stage, with spotlights on them. A sound machine played harsh wind. “Any word from Cy?” Becca asked. “He says he’s on the way, but sometimes you never know with him,” Aurora said. Becca sensed the barbs in her mom’s voice. Ouch.
